if you take the top option on your last choice of dialogue with Abelas (telling him Thank you for letting you use the well) he says something like "Don't thank me yet Shemlen" or something like it. I'm hoping that was a bug, drives me nuts when he does that to my elf. I suppose I'd know if he did it to another race too, like the Qunari, guess I have to finish that playthrough.

No. It's not a bug.  When you say 'you're like me' earlier on, he adamantly says though you may look it, you are nothing like him. He calls the Dalish shadows of the ancient elves.  To him you really are no different than the humans that you are traveling with.

Well, he does distinguish a bit in that he recognizes you're degenerate elven. With a non-elf protagonist he just comments on you having an elf with you.

The shemlen could be a scripting bug similar to the Mythal stuff.

Hmm, that maybe the case but he says  also that you have the features of those that call themselves elvhen, he also notes that when you have one in your party when you ARE human. I suppose what I meant was that even if he didn't consider you one of "his people" he wouldn't lump you together with the humans. Solas is kind of the same after all. He doesn't see the current elves as "his people" either but he doesn't lump you in with the humans. For example, when he talks to you after Haven is destroyed and is telling you the orb is elven he says "it is ours". They aren't really consistent with the elf/not elf thing sometimes in the game, hence why I still hope it's a bug of some sort.

Modern elves' lifespans are, on average, about as quick and fleeting as humans' are, so... Yeah. Add that to how he denounces the Dalish as "shadows wearing vallaslin, you are not my people!" before, and it's pretty clear it was intentional. =/

 

I know, but it stings to be lumped together with the Humans is all. I figured he'd at least distinguish you as different from Human.

Yeah, that's why I don't think it's scripting. It sort of fits with the rest of the conversation.  He also doesn't say "shemlen" in anger, at that point he's pretty 'chill' with you. From my understanding of the history of the word and the the history between humans/elves, the word wasn't always the semi-insult it is now.  It was word that the elves used to describe not just the life-span of the humans but their entire way of being.  Elves lived this ridiculously slow-paced life, humans obviously couldn't.  To Abelas, a modern Dalish elf would be a shemlen.

Abelas' use of shemlen just goes to show how out of touch he and his squad of sentinels are, he probably didn't even realise he was insulting Lavellan. To him it's the word for short lived mortals and not a big deal.

I'd love a Citadel-style DLC for this game. Or just something that had the companions interacting more in Skyhold. In the same vein as the Wicked Grace game, among others. Bonus points if it can be played after we get Solas back in w/e DLC we deal with him in. *shows off Team Optimism patch*

 

I think perhaps games like Harvest Moon spoiled me with character relationship cutscenes and I've never fully recovered. lol

Also I'm replaying DA2 mostly because I miss Fenris and I have a thing for angsty/fatalistic/beautiful/grim elves and while on the wikia I found this sketch (which you probably have seen) by Matt Rhodes of post-DA2 Fenris (mostly him just messing around) and I couldn't help and be reminded of a much older angsty/fatalistic/beautiful/grim Elvhen Wolf.

With all these funny - insert Parks and Rec quote or other funny thing - on these pictures, I really wish we'd get a more funny RPG. Like just a good solid comedy, RPG.  Or just maybe the writing could be more snappy. Snarky.  I know they had the snark option, but those aren't all that great.

Do you relate to your Lavellan? I mean, do you play your Lavellan as yourself, based on the same ideas, morals, thoughts etc. or do you make up somebody completely unrelated to yourself? In case it's a different character, why do you build her exactly the way you do?

I find that fascinating because mine usually is me. My decisions, my thoughts, my "back story". (Well, I share Avejajed's approach to back stories, actually.)

Some but not fully. There are decisions that I have her make that is something I am totally against or wouldn't say. There are times where there isn't an opinion that is close to mine and I'm like well gotta pick the lesser of 2 evils. Anyways she does make the same decisions I would make in rl if I was in her situation...sometimes because like I said there are times where what I want her to say or do isn't an option in the game.
