Thinking of the Lavellan Solas relationship (and obviously I liked it, wouldn't be here otherwise)...always gives me the feeling that it's not a balanced relationship at all.
One might argue that it's not much of a relationship since they don't really do much but with everything going on, one can hardly expect to go gallivanting through lavendar fields.
Throughout their moments, Solas is always the one who holds most of the cards. When they first meet, he obviously knows a lot about her but she knows nothing of him but, unlike with many other companions, that doesn't really change all that much. Lavellan only knows of Solas what he has allowed her to know.
If only his words painted images as clear as his murals!From the very beginning, he's been keeping his guard up, which is fine in itself and not something that he should be chided for.He's also not the only romance option who isn't exactly forthcoming with the truth.But he's clearly the one in control, the one who holds all the knowledge. He knew from the beginning that it couldn't really happen and, despite his deep affection for Lavellan, he couldn't bring himself to break with his plans. I believe he found all of this painful, I believe there was a deep internal struggle and I ultimately believe that he had no choice but to leave if he wanted to stay true to himself. But I also believe that Solas was quite selfish. He didn't consider what taking the Vallaslin would mean to her after he left. She'd be the only Dalish with her markings removed, with no real explanation beyond "well someone told me they're slave marks". He branded her as an outsider, which might not have crossed his mind because he's been an outsider himself for so long.
It's what you'd expect from an Ancient elvhen god who falls in love with a mortal Dalish I guess. From his perspective, Lavellan is unique, intriguing, wonderful...and a thread to age old plans towards which he feels honor-bound. But she's also like a child walking on tippy-toes and as such, an ancient God cannot hope she'll understand him. Sad. ;_;
I'm pretty sure Solas doesn't know anything about Lavellan aside from that she's Dalish and she has the mark at first. But yes, he does get to know more about her than she ever does him. I don't think we can fault Solas for the vallaslin though. It's Lavellan's choice whether or not she wants it removed. As to your last point about immortals believing a mortal will never be able to understand them... I think we'll have to wait for the DLC for that.
