I actually love Sera quite a bit. For such a gregarious character, she's rather difficult to understand, especially if you're a Lavellan. She's a good foil for Solas because in many ways they are very similar. She cares about individuals rather than big organizations, and fights on the behalf of those who are so often used and then discarded by the powerful. However where Solas is jaded and cynical, and has been around long enough to have his idealism beaten out of him, Sera is still very determined to see the world in terms of the way she thinks it ought to be.
Sera's also rather defensive-minded. What she wants most is a place to belong, after being rejected for being an elf, for not being elfy enough, for being poor, for being a nobody, etc. She figures she'd rather be a nobody along with all the other nobodies than try (and probably fail) at being an elf. So when Solas tries to reach out to her with elfy stuff, that gets her hackles up immediately, because she figures that she is being evaluated and is (once again) found wanting.
Now, from Solas's perspective, he sees Sera as an elf who has been victimized by the elves' assimilation into human society, so he at first tries to offer her some of her culture back (her language). Then, when that does not work, and he sees that she's just going to keep being aggressive and rude, he responds by sparring with her in kind, because that's what she responds to best. I quite like their relationship. While they're quite snippy with each other, they actually get along pretty well. Not as well as, say, Sera and Blackwall, but I definitely got the sense that they'd come to an odd sort of understanding by the time Solas was trolling her as payback for filling his bedroll with lizards.
I really wish we got to see this conversation as an elf, but if you aren't a Lavellan and you have high enough approval with Solas then you can ask him about Sera.
Turns out he understands her quite well, which I thought was very sweet. He also sees what's admirable about her, which is more of a chance than a lot of people give Sera. I believe in a different version of the conversation Solas says that he clashes with Sera because she'd take it better than either his pity or his envy. And I've got to agree.
