Alright, I took the plunge into Solas' AO3 tag today as well (because I'm determined to debauch my day off, I guess) and have concluded that the reason so much of it seems awkward and gross to me is because people are picturing Lavellan as a teenage girl and Solas as her senpai.

Hmm. I'm a definitely little guilty of mentorshipping; my Lavellan's not a mage, and I headcanoned that she picked up the Arcane Knowledge perk because she spent so much time talking with Solas and learning from him.  She's pretty young too.  Though IMO the mentor-ish elements of their relationship aren't as problematic as they would be IRL since Solas has no formal position in the Inquisition and no real authority.  If anything, the balance of power there swings the opposite way once Lavellan becomes Inquisitor.

I do get the mentor appeal. But I'm not a fan of one being a teenager or having the mind of an innocent child, either. I even felt like a pedophile doing the Tali romance, as a female gamer. Dude Shep just creeps me out.

I think the problem with the teacher/student is only when it's sexualized. Lavellan (or any inquisitor, really) has much she can learn from Solas. Or from any other of the inquisition's inner circle, for that matter. While she may be a noble or a Dalish elf used to hunting or whatever- the people around her come from places of power or experience. Even Blackwall has years of military training outside of his Warden-sized lie.  Vivienne is a skilled manipulator and mage, Leliana fought the very archdemon itself with the Hero of Ferelden. I mean, each of the companions have something the inquisitor could (and should) learn from.

 

That doesn't mean she needs to wear thigh high socks and pigtails or anything. Geesh.

Having someone as a mentor does not always imply that they're older or more mature than the student, it just means that they know more about a specific area of interest and are in a position to share their knowledge.  Perhaps most fics put Lavellan in a child-like student relationship(?) but that's a characteristic of the fic, not a characteristic of mentor-student relationships.  

 

I tutor in chemistry, which makes me like a "mentor" in that specific subject to the people I tutor.  Many of the people I tutor are older, and the majority are much more mature than I!

Thats how I found out about him too. There are advertisemnts for a concert in my town right now, but you have win tickets and it will be held at a "secret location". Ten years ago I would have been all over that but now I am too old that kind of hipster stuff (the concert not the music)
