Lol, I would have gotten a Cass, but I wanted it to be something especially unique for my first DA I commission. So my character's love interest in his background seemed best. That, and I kinda wanted to have something to troll the elf haters in the Cass thread with XD

Sorry, it took me so long to catch up that these responses are slightly off topic. My only vibrant memory of high school chemistry is when I grabbed a hot plate my partner had kindly neglected to tell me was turned on. Good times.

 

That's the thing though. Solas and Lavellan never referred to each other as hahren and da'len in my playthrough, so when I finished the game and went scrounging for fics, I was like, where did that come from? I'm not into teacher/student or elder/innocent relationships either (they squick me out a little actually). It's pretty sad that I can't enjoy fics like Apotheosis though, since a lot of people say it's a great read.

 

I would suggest giving Apotheosis another shot. Lavellan's dynamic with Solas changes quite a bit throughout the course of the story. I think it's a fairly realistic portrayal actually - she's dealing with a crazy amount of culture shock among the Maker-worshipping shemlen in the beginning, so it takes awhile for her to completely own her role in the Inquisition. But the romance doesn't truly start until she and Solas have a more even dynamic. By the later chapters, I feel she comes off as more than a match for him.

 

Oh, KotORII... why could I not have Bao-Dur as a romance. Or Sand in NWN2. Those would have been good, solid LIs for sure.

Bao-Dur! I also wish he'd been a romance option, his voice actor is amazing. Gah, I was so mad you have to solo the end portion of the game without your companions.

 

Speaking of the wonderful KOTOR games, below is a bunch of *very* spoiler filled rambling that ends up relating to Solas in the end, I swear. If you have not played KOTOR 1, stop now and go get the game off GOG.com for 10 dollars. It's super fantastic.

I played a painfully goody-two-shoes light side character in KOTOR 1. Treated everyone nicely, gave all my hard-earned money to minor NPCs who fell on hard times, etc. Toward the end of the game, you face off against a former companion who has turned to the dark side.

 

There is a moment where she basically says 'join me and together we will rule the galaxy'. I remember just staring at the screen for a few minutes thinking there was no way that was a legitimate option, but it was so completely out of character that I just had to try it.... Turns out it *is* a real option and suddenly I was cutting down my former allies in cold blood. Met up with the rest of my companions to explain the situation, and they promptly lost their minds in an epic meltdown of shock and disbelief. It was glorious! I've never quite experienced that in a game since.

 

I don't think it would be the same situation in a final showdown with Solas, since his motivations will probably be sympathetic enough not to count as full blown villain-ery. Still, there's something appealing about the option to help instead of hinder his plans, especially if it involves aiding the elves and the Inquisitor is Dalish. Not too keen on the thought of sacrificing other companions, but it might not have to come to that.

With Cullen you get 60 Infuence but your clan dies.....my last pt was a male elf and that was the first time I got that far helping the clan. I thought Cullen would do a good job,obviously not.

Alright, I took the plunge into Solas' AO3 tag today as well (because I'm determined to debauch my day off, I guess) and have concluded that the reason so much of it seems awkward and gross to me is because people are picturing Lavellan as a teenage girl and Solas as her senpai.

 

This romance only makes sense to me if they are both pretty mature. After all, a clan would not send a juvenile to spy on the conclave, Lavellen has to have been around the block a few times.

Heh, I forgot about that. And I really liked The Last Flight. You can tell by Colonel's starry eyes that he did as well. Not just for Garahel and the griffons, but for badass female elf mages.

 

I liked the library, and the griffons of course, but I really wanted to see that library.

My conception of the Dalish has always been comparisons to the Jews, Berber, and Roma, and the DA elven names often do sound Hebrew. And Fremen, which doesn't quite fit that same mold. My Lavellan's photo concept is a portrait by Israel Fichmann.
 

Based on the comments I've been reading, all Orlesian humans can go **** themselves as far as I'm concerned.
 
Briala may be as two-faced and bastardly as the rest of them, but at least she's using her power to help countless marginalized people (giving them a future "for the first time in centuries") instead of just grabbing more power for herself after already being well off.

That's my thought, too, and how I think of my Lavellan PC. I think Mims is right and the characterization of Lavellan is reflected by the age of the writer/ audience. I'll be very interested to read yours.

I am SO happy David Gaider is writing the next DA novel! I honestly do not mean to offend anybody here who loved Last Flight, but I really did not love it (or like it much). It's not a horrific book, but it bored me to tears and I really like the other novels written by the guys who actually work at Bioware. The author of Last Flight might be more an actual fiction writer, but the entire story was bland and dry for me, although the 'Griffon' game was strong and very well written. I just have had way more fun reading the books by Weekes and Gaider, even if their specialty is not in writing fiction. I could barely finish Last Flight (although the end is really good).

 

I hope I'm not coming off offensively to anyone because I respect all your opinions even if they differ from mine. Let's just say, I'm VERY picky about fiction. It's sort of the career field I'm in, or trying to get into, so I have a hard time reading it without my editor cap on. Plus, the author honestly got a few things wrong that I'm surprised weren't edited out before publication. For one, Garahel could not have had a one night stand with a Qunari woman because the Qunari people did not move to Par Vollen until 100 years later. I suppose that's just an easy oversight to make and really doesn't mean anything, but it yanked me right out of the narrative. And, Garahel's girlfriend could have been a Vael, but she claims she's part of the ruling Vaels of Starkhaven, but they were not ruling Starkhaven that early on in history. It makes me stop reading and yell at the book when stuff like that happens and I notice it!

 

Anyway, as long as they go back to having the DA writers writing the books, I'm happy. I think it means we can expect to see characters we already know and/or characters that will be important to the story world in future games, otherwise they wouldn't hand it over to an author who doesn't even know anything about Dragon Age. Yay!!!!!!!!

I loved Last Flight (especially Garahel and Crookytail   ), but I'm really happy to hear David Gaider is working on the next DA novel.  There's definitely more weight (and less lore wonkiness) when one of the game writers handles the novels.  Tho that tweet is both exciting and terrifying.
