In his concept art he looks amused, or playful, or something along those lines. In the screenshots we've had, he just looks tired. I guess we'll know soon enough...

I hope he's something of an anti-social personality. Hermit-like, not used to having to deal with other people and their wants and needs. Sort of a scholarly loner by choice and circumstance (as an apostate). But not self-conscious about it. Like... I imagine he might get along with Cole, because he's more used to engaging with Fade creatures than with other people. 

 

I just really want him to not be interested in putting up with other people's sh*t. He's got no time for that-- there's a reason he became a Fade expert, and it wasn't so he could socialize and gossip about fashion.

I agree with everything but the socializing part.   If he is proud of what he knows and likes sharing his knowledge with others, we could learn things about the fade that we don't already know which is not too much on the grand scheme of things.

I like this too, but I wouldn't mind if you had to do a little convincing to get him to share his knowledge.

That would be interesting! Like he would have intelligence standards so that he is not just going to go on a tangent about his studies. It would be boring for him to be the only one in the conversation who is not thinking, "What the heck is this guy talking about? He needs to get out more and have a few drinks."

On the other hand, it would also be amusing if, when you did get him to open up, he went off on a scholarly tangent, and the rest of your companions responded with a long, awkward pause. Especially if you had the chance to tell him "It's okay, Solas. I totally followed that, and I think it's fascinating!" (whether or not you're telling the truth, haha).

Definitely like this!  I used to have trouble working with a team because I knew how I wanted things done and preferred to do it all myself to avoid having to explain it (thank goodness I grew out of that >.<), and I could see a loner/socially awkward Solas being like that.  It would be hard learning to open up and trust others enough to rely on them for help when you've been alone so long and are used to doing everything yourself.

Varric: Hey baldy I heard some of the others are giving you trouble. You want to hear a story to cheer you up?

Solas: It depends does it involve sex or a lesson on how one should handle Bianca's trigger?

Iron Bull: It better involve sex. Speaking of sex you should get some Solas. What do you say? Want to ride the bull?

Solas: Er no thanks I'm good.

Iron Bull: Ah maybe later then! I have never been with an elf. Most seemed too fragile, but you seem...different. Thought I would test that.

Solas: *blushes*

Varric: Hehe you should see the look on your face baldy. It tells a whole other story.

Solas: I think we're done with this conversation.

Varric: Who said anything about "we" I think I might write another book called "So a Qunari and an Elf walk Into a Tavern and they..."

Solas: They what?

Varric: There is nothing more to the title. You see baldy one of the important things you need to think about when writing a story is that you have to have a title. A title that grabs the writers' attention.

Solas: So why not just call it "The Qunari and the Elf have Sex". It would seem that alone would grab people's attention?

Iron Bull: I like the way you think Solas! Think of the MAYHEM!

Varric: I think your finally starting to loosen up baldy.

As far as personality, I just hope he isn't the bitter/angry/standoffish type of follower because those are usually my least favorite.

To be honest, Solas is the character I'm least excited about in Inquisition. Maybe it has to do with the fact that we know basically nothing about him, but for now, he's there with Blackwall and Cole as characters I don't care for. I'm sure that will change the closer we get to the release of the game.

Team Crushed Expectations: random and baseless speculation

 

Inquisitor: knocks on door.  "Solas, can I come in?"

 

Solas: the sound of rustling paper is heard. "If you insist."

 

Inquisitor: Opens door.  "I do insist.  I had to stop Sera from using Cole as target practice at dinner tonight.  Isn't that usually your job?"

 

Solas:  "He can take care of himself."

 

Inquisitor:  "In a fight, maybe.  But he certainly isn't up to Sera's verbal assaults, she's flings adjectives as smoothly as arrows, and to no less effect.   Speaking of words, you have lapsed from taciturn to mute since Dorian joined us.  Care to tell me why?" 

 

Solas:  "No."

 

Inquisitor:  "If you have a problem with him I need to know.  Closing the rifts is going to take the whole team."  crosses room to look Solas directly in the eye.  "I need you at your best."

 

Solas:  pulls a thick, yellowed stack of papers from behind him and hands them to the Inquisitor.  "My thesis on the energy fluctuations associated with opening and closing fade rifts and the influence of magical manipulation in areas where the veil is thin on their spontaneous occurrence."

 

Inquisitor:  confused "What does this have to do with Dorian?"

 

Solas: "Nothing really."

 

Inquisitor: arches eyebrow "Nothing?"

 

Solas:  "There was an open seat in the Department of Fade Studies at the University in Vyrantium.  It was not as prestigious as the University in Minrathous so I thought I had a chance....  Humans never see past the ears, you know."

 

Inquisitor:  "I know.  I'm sorry, Solas.  If.... When this is all over, I promise I will work to change that."

Just want to say, nice and informative (well, what little is known) OP! I'm a huge Cullen fan but I'm looking forward to hearing more about Solas! I'm definitely interested in his story and possible romance! Just out of curiosity, have they announced who his writer is yet? Besides Cullen, Varric, and possibly Cole, Solas is the one I'm most excited about.

Sorry if I sound like a spoil sport but I think it'd be nice to limit the banter posts to those including Solas since the thread is already very active and moves very quickly.  I spend a ton of time on the forums and still have trouble keeping up sometimes so I can only imagine how people with less time to browse feel

Hi!  I sometimes lurk in the Cullen thread, you all are so much fun  No writer confirmation yet, but we're kind of thinking Sheryl Chee or Lukas Kristjanson since they've only claimed one character each so far (but it's really just up in the air )

Dorian: So my not as dashing pointy-eared friend I must know how you are able to manipulate fade rifts.

Solas: Why is it you point towards my appearance whenever Vivienne is around? I would take your questions more seriously if you did not.

Vivienne: Well to be honest your clothes could be much better darling. I admit that I cannot stand to be around such a walking mockery of fashion, but the Inquisition cannot do this without me so I must deal with it.

Dorian: Solas if you want us to stop mocking your appearance, we could go get you some clothes to go with that fur coat and a wig for that boring spot on top of your head.

I'm thinking that's the reason. If we got to know more, I think the whole fade expert thing would become fascinating but as we don't know how that will work or what it means, people aren't giving him attention or inquiring about it.
