I agree. That's why I loved the DA elves. They seem more grounded. BW seems to be swinging the other way though because Solas and def. Abelas are riding the haughty-elf trope train all the way to Mirkwood. So if we get any others in the pantheon pops up, I look forward to rolling my eyes at the "Your culture is garbage and look at how amazing we are even though we've driven ours into the ground." speech.
Hahaha. Yeah. But I find I don't mind it as much in DA because in this case the time of the ancient elves is very obviously over. Their civilization is dead and gone, which entitles them to a bit of grumpiness.
And Solas is a weird mix of prideful and self-deprecating, which I find quite endearing. He usually realizes when he's being a bit of an ass and apologizes. He's also very aware of the fact that he's f*cked more sh*t up than anyone else in the Inquisition. Possibly more than anyone else in the world.
I think that's what makes me like him, despite appearing similar to the Haughty Elf Trope. He's not infallible, and he will quite readily tell you that he isn't. Haughty Elves are usually aloof and Too Good For You, but Solas doesn't place himself above anybody else. He only gives praise when he truly means it, but also doesn't hold it back when he feels like it's been earned. All in all, he seems very secure in who he is, and doesn't feel the need to prove himself to anybody. But he's still deeply empathetic and compassionate. He's also not untouchable. He gets angry, lonely, flustered. He wants to connect with people but also finds it difficult to trust others. He's admirable, but flawed.
