I actually can't imagine ever taking that spec for roleplay reasons with ANY inquisitor. It just seems foolishly reckless after hearing what Cullen went through.

My Cassandra-romancing Trevelyan chose the Templar spec. I just hope he doesn't end up becoming addicted to lyrium in the future. ^^; Which is funny, since he convinced Cullen to stop taking lyrium. *sigh* At least they both could bond over something.

Same here!

I keep meaning to get around to it too, but since I don't play humans, that leaves Lavellan. And it's nearly impossible not to romance Solas with a Lavellan. ><

I'm having a hard time playing DAI as a non-elf. I had to put my m!Trevelyan PT on hold just to replay my Lavellan PT from the beginning. :P I would love to romance Cullen as mage Lavellan but I'll be tempted to romance Solas again. D:

That is a good point, and I agree. Perhaps it would have been best to come up with another name. Since the Inquisitor never actually enters an organization or takes vows in order to use the skills, it wouldn't have been too hard; though, when you spec as Templar, your trainer actually tries to get you to train more via the war table. Cullen's option turns this down, so perhaps it was merely used to further that part of his personal story.

Possibly. Maybe less to do with Cullen specifically, and more Templars in general. We saw all about the mage plight and hear about all the bad things that happen to them, but we definitely haven't heard a proportional amount of information about the woes of the Templars. Lyrium addiction is a big deal, despite it getting downplayed/not talked about. Cullen's special dialogue when you tell him you want to become a Templar is totally meant for roleplayers or lore interested people who want a former Templar's side of it.

I like the demon killing abilities of the Templar, but I still had a hard time actually committing one of my characters to the path because the game specifically tells you that you're being a Templar who ingests lyrium at this point forward, not a Seeker or other type of demon hunter.

My Trevelyan was a huge Templar fan-girl quite let down by the reality of the situation.  First they told her off in Val Royeaux then she had to rescue who she could from the Red Fortress of Crazy, and then Cullen started telling her about lyrium withdrawal.  By the time she was ready to turn in the box to start her Templar training she'd decided maybe it really was good to be champion.

I had Adrian Trevelyan, my only Andrastian hard-liner, go for the Templar route. He saw it as a way of bonding with Cassandra, and that they'd face the whole lyrium addiction thing together, suffering in service of Andraste and the Chantry.

Then he learned that the Seekers don't have to worry about lyrium addiction. And then he learned that it was all Solas and Corypheus and one extremely badass woman, not the direct intervention of Andraste.

Then Cassandra became selected as Divine.

He became my Kicked Puppy playthrough. My Drug-Addicted, Poetry-Spouting Kicked Puppy. :( (Who closes all the Rifts, because double-Templar plus Demon-Slaying Runes.)

On a brighter note, I was watching the fifth season finale of Downton Abbey recently, only to recognize one of the minor noble characters who was flirting with one of the major characters as being played by our very own British male Inquisitor. :D

Then I heard a character who sounded very similar to Coryflora, so I checked out IMDB. David Sterne wasn't there, but there were four or five actors who did various minor voices for Inquisition. And then there's the guy who played Lord 'Shrimpy', the lovable old guy who had the greatest moment in the episode. :D

He played King Henselt in Witcher 2.  :o

Who was not a lovable old guy, suffice it to say.

Both Scottish, though.

I like to pretend THAT guy is an ancient elf. Only because, if you listen to him speak, he is like, "All that ancient elf stuff in the Temple of Mythal is clearly just demons," and I like to think he is trying to be an undercover ancient elf and is really, really bad at it. Like Blackwall level bad.

THAT guy: I love Andraste! For real. Ancient elves. What ancient elves?

Dalish elf: Well, ok. But one of our people saw them.

THAT guy: OUR people!? Oh, I mean, yes, we are elves after all.

I think the templars got dropped with the villain card way too hard... I can't really sympathize with them at all. I do believe that the mages shouldn't be 100 percent unregulated and free, but they just go apeshit and overreact so unrealistically even before demon involvement... **** them, tbh. Never liked them, even as the mages get thrown the idiot card. Sometimes Bioware takes people to unbelievable extremes. Or a lot, actually.

Well I think unbelievable extremes are par for the course in a fantasy game anyway. Part of the appeal maybe. Otherwise we'd be playing the Sims. Without a cheat command.

Of course I never actually played the Sims. I just built them houses all day.

*stands up and looks around the thread*...My name is Zarro and I also only built houses in the Sims...and often had to challenge Death to a fiddle contest due to my sims burning to death.

I think somewhere Gaider commented once that he felt the writing was too pro-mage in Origins and too anti-Templar in 2. So they compensated by having the mages screw up but still have some good motivations, (It's basically the same thing as the idea about Solas freeing a million Fenrises. They don't know what to do outside of slavery.) while the Templars have some massive douche-bags as always, there's the counter-balance of Cullen, Ser Barris, and a lot more attention paid to the sacrifice that is using lyrium.

As for an earlier comment, Gaider also mentioned that Alistair was lying, and that lyrium is required for Templar powers. It's just you can use them a long time after before its effects wear off. I think it was a ret-con rather than Alistair lying being intended from the start, though. :)

 This makes me want to play a warrior Lavellan to romance Solas:
[spoiler]

I have two 2hander Lavellans whose AI is set to Defend Solas. :)

Yeah, she's much smaller than her weapon, but she does kick ass.

I already posted here about Briseis the Reaper, but Claudia is a 2hander Templar, only 12 though, and seems fun so far.

'Course I laugh at myself when i play them because, really, do i have to defend a god...he's a god. Oh well.

Just a note, although I was a little chagrined by a forumite thinking my headcannon for Briseis was depressing, I actually am writing up a playthrough for her in bits and pieces. Unlike my late sister, I am no writer, but it is cathartic for me so far.

It makes me sad because I can't imagine Alistair being a good liar, but at least it makes the lore consistent.  Of course, I can't imagine him being all capable and responsible like he turns out to be if you leave him in the Wardens, either, so clearly they took him in another direction from my head canon.

It is absolutely retconned. We had this same disussion in the Cullen thread and most of us agreed*if not all* that they retconned the whole Alistair and lyrium thing to save face and to make sure everything was "logical" in the new direction they were going. Alistair wouldn't lie about something like that, that is not his character and for them to imply as such...I mean really? Alistair would have nothing to gain by lying about something like that and if he is being romanced and potentially married his lover, well, I don't think he would be lying/putting her in danger.

I felt they were a bit more sympathetic in this game(old lady punching aside).  The Chantry is a serious problem.  I've always been pretty pro-Mage, but BW did a good job making me think they worst kind of idiots in this game.  Not all mages of course, just "Fiona and her Malcontents" as Vivienne would say.  She still got her freedom, but I'd been wanting it for them for so long that I just had to do it.

I do agree, BW hasn't done a great job adding alot a gray to the Mage/Templar story so I'm kind of glad it's over.  Yes, at times, people will go apeshit but for the most part that's not going to be the case.  I want to be standing there agonizing over what was right and what was wrong. I want to feel bad for everybody involved or hate everybody because they're both wrong.

It's the only way to fit in without being shunned by fellow children in various groups due to acknowledging you enjoy the musical arts. The perfect camouflage.

Well said.  I could never send Cassandra back to them. She deserves so much better than the Chantry. And they don't deserve her.

edit: If I had to pick, I'd prefer a picarto
