What's interesting to me is that the darkspawn started popping up all over the empire on the fringes, apparently. And that they spotted Dumat years into the conflict, only when they were about to head to the surface.

Most infuriatingly, they don't give us a date when the darkspawn first appear to the dwarves. We know that the dwarf kingdoms began to collapse fifteen years after it's said that the Magisters entered the Black City. That's likely when Dumat leads them to the surface.

I imagine the Magisters needed manual labor to uncover Dumat.

And there were at least two female Magisters among the Seven...

Oh, God.

Oh, God no.

That underlined bit also matches up perfectly with The Last Flight.

Are you... suggesting magister broodmothers?

Yes.

:(

Where did the darkspawn come from?

See, for a DLC about the darkspawn for Inquisition, we could get all the fun of going against the Architect and the Mother, but in one mind-shriveling terrifying package.

A Broodmother boss fight.

With Walking Bomb, Blizzard, Fireball, Vomit Bile, and Enchanted Tentacle Weapons.

And she births emissaries.

 Goodbye, sleep.

Um...as an apology.

This lends credence to the talk of them being 'imprisoned' by an outside force. Shove them down far, in a place that's really uncomfortable for dragons.

How do they survive without food? Are they kept in stasis, in uthenera, or are they already Tainted?

It's all so strange.

If they're already tainted, then that's their source of nourishment.

If they aren't tainted yet, then it's probably something like uthenera. But then why call out to darkspawn?

Wait. What if it's not the archdemon that's calling out to darkspawn, but whatever spell has them imprisoned? To give it an image, you have this archdemon just slumbering away, and then this cage wrapped around it, and it's that cage that's calling out to the darkspawn.

Only, that doesn't really work because if it's just the cage, then the song should stop once the archdemon's set free, which it doesn't.

I think I'm going with the archdemons are already tainted.

Unless the archdemon actually wants to be tainted. Which I'll have to read madrar's works to understand why first.

Yeeeaaahhhh, this is why I'm a bit squeamish to go into the details of *how* the magisters created the darkspawn.   Whether it was captured dwarves, or female magisters.  The original darkspawn the dwarves fought were said to be "in our own likeness", which suggests genlocks.

Caves I understand. The fake Andraste taking hold of a whole mountain I understand. But burrowing so far underground even darkspawn have to dig to get to you? And they only have space now because darkspawn now have control over the Deep Roads. When it was still full of dwarves, and when the magisters touched the Black City that was the case, there wouldn't have been room for dragons to move underground. And yet Dumat's already undergound by the time the Blights start.

Maybe they didn't burrow at all.  If we're talking elven gods, we're probably going to get into things like eluvians and pocket dimensions.  And underground spaces can actually be very big, even in natural geology.  When Andruil was taking her trips down into the abyss, she probably didn't spend a lot of time digging either.

This matches well with what we learned in the last flight. Being tainted and experimenting with bloodmagic is my guess on how the blight really kicked off. I also doubt they did this on their own accord (Dumat).

I'm not sure if it's blood magic, because that's related to demons, and the Blight is alien to them.  It might work in a similar way though.

Eluvians! I forgot about eluvians. And the one in the DAO Dalish origin's said to lead underground. Would a dragon fit through that though? Then again, magic.

I thought it was completely idiotic, and based on the premise that all would be lost in Thedas without our Mary Sue Warden.

I just found the whole idea a disagreeable deconstruction. Tasteless self parody.... But there you go.

Dumat supposedly taught them bloodmagic. I'm not convinced it is related to demons at all, beyond that they're an easy way to learn it. Though Dumat is as we all know, inspired by Dumah, angel of silence and prince of hell.

Yeah I would think the song is in the taint, the way that Justice and Cole say that lyrium sings beautifully. It's very similar to how Ruck and others describe the archdemon song.

....or how about that guy who took the dragon form mentioned in Mythal's temple was punished by forcing him through an eluvian leading deep underground and locking him away there?

Making the archdemons ancient elven criminals?

Though I'm now going around in circles

I'd say it's both in the taint and out. Lyrium has an audible sound to it as well apparently, and there's the grey warden text again in the Western approach:

There's not a clear answer about who taught humans blood magic.  Some say elves, others Dumat, and others the Forbidden Ones.  There's probably not a single answer, though I find the Forbidden Ones the most suspicious, since they must have some claim to fame for their little club other than showing up to be killed in each game.  Elves likely knew blood magic, and the Tevinters probably learned some things from them, and I have no doubt the Old Gods instructed them to use blood magic for their purposes.  But I don't think the Blight itself comes from the same thing, since there's been a fair amount of canon evidence otherwise.  Blood magic is in the domain of demons and the Fade.  The Blight is something of the Void, which is alien to spirits and demons, but is the realm of the Forgotten Ones (Dumat as a prince of hell, indeed.)  But there's probably some synergy if they work on some similar principles.  I think that's what Isseya may have accidentally done, if it wasn't simply a "price of blood magic" sort of thing meant to illustrate that people really don't understand the forces they're dealing with.

I don't mean that the origins of the blight is literally the use of blood magic, but that this is how it was originally spread. I do think that it may have altered it though, but beyond that, no. I'm still of the thought that it is something native to old gods.
