The romance thread has ups and downs, but it's definitely hitting a pretty low spot right now. It's usually not this bad at all. Half the time it's people posting animal pics that remind them of companions.

When discussing choice, though, it really should just be more than A or B, both of whom are big buff warrior types, even if their characters are different. If Blackwall was a romance, then that would be another big buff warrior type. Even Varric is small and buff, if a rogue rather than a warrior. Only Solas is physically different as well as being a completely different class and from what we have been told intellectually different as well.
In DAO we had the contrast between Alistair and Zevran, not just in character but also in physical appearance. Both were attractive in their own way. I loved Alistair's character but Zevran was good too and I romanced him far more because I'm more attracted to the elven physique. I prefer playing elves and like to romance them if I can.
One of the great things about DA2 was that they actually turned the expectations you would have for race around. So Fenris was the warrior, but he was lithe and nimble as well as strong, while Anders was the mage love interest and actually more solid looking. But they were physically different and this was actually what differentiated between them far more than their mental outlook, Anders started off more romantic but Fenris ended that way and both were fanatical in their views.
The contrast was also there between the two female LIs, Isabella the curvy sexy one, Merrill the naïve slim elfin one.
I'm not seeing that sort of choice in DAI unless you play your PC gay or bisexual. Without Solas my straight female elf PC will have no real choice and I will probably opt for Cullen if at all. My male PC will be luckier because I can always play him bisexual and opt for Dorian, who is neither a warrior/rogue or big and buff, but the closest I can see to the slim lithe elf male that I prefer.

In this around 15 minutes in, Gaider talks about "The Chart". http://www.youtube.c...h?v=rHJceORMYPo
In it, he says that they set the limit at 2 for each character type. In this and the romance thread, he doesn't just say that everyone will get two options, he says it's basically their policy that everyone will get two option. If he was just saying generally that everyone gets two, I would say maybe it's just lucky IB came through, but based on what Gaider says, it just doesn't seem that way, to me. He literally uses the example in the recording that they have to make a different choice as not to screw over gay male dwarves, so the scenario where they were actually going to do that seems too disingenuous for me to believe is reality.
But maybe someone could as Allan about this, since it seems like he didn't mind bringing it up?
It sounded to me like he pulled the combination off the top of his head. So, I don't think there was a situation where gay male dwarves in particular were going to be screwed.

YES! Positivity! I am positive! I blame the romance thread.. I always tell myself... just one peek, okay? Don't go posting in there and stirring up the debate even further... Next thing you know I've argued and gotten yelled at and rolled my eyes at a bunch of people and then my mood is like this
Aw, it tends to happen don't worry. Everyone is tense and everyone wants their desired romance to become true. ;_; And knowing that half of us will be happy while the other half will suffer...we don't want to be the half to suffer. Plus, some people are touching subjects in bad ways that are very controversial. I just hope we get SOMETHING LI related at CC. I can't bear this mundane and yet simultaneously anxious wait any longer.

I think Solas would be great for variety in the options. Cullen/Dorian are your standard "conventionally handsome" human men, Iron Bull is the beefcake choice, Solas would be the less obviously masculine, more intellectual choice. They're three very different types, imo, which would be pretty nice to see.

It sounded random to me, too, but I meant it would be the situation that would have happened if they couldn't get Iron Bull fixed in time and there wasn't another bi male to fill the gaps. Not necessarily just gay dwarves, but possible straight female ones, as well.

Not to mention that I'd really, REALLY like to see them subvert the "smart, focused guy isn't into romance" trope. Even if Solas has never focused on or thought about a relationship before, that doesn't mean that he never would. If that doesn't happen in this game, I hope maybe we see it in the future.

I just want an intellectual LI. Like, so bad. So bad. Like, I was all over Mordin in Mass Effect 2. And here's his writer, writing another nerdy character. Just... just... just let me have him.

I definitely agree with you, I'd love to see a more intellectual guy as an LI. It's something that's tagged in the trope thread, so if not now, maybe they will consider it next time. ![]()

A nerdy type who dabbled in borderline magics? Yes please. Yes please.
EDIT: Now that I think about it, that's basically Solas, and Mordin.

Exactly... Granted, I wan't really into Mordin attraction-wise- his appearance and voice put me off of seeing him like that - though I adored his character so much! Solas's appearance and voice do the opposite of put me off so... Yes. WANT.

I agree, I think the biggest vote we have for Solas as an LI is the claim to variety and the idea that originally IB was pretty much going to probably be Qunari only, possibly male humans.
So, essentially, when working the equations we can sort of "leave him out" because I doubt he counted towards the atleast 2 factor and was probably where some folk got more than two.
Also, if Gay Male Dwarves wasn't a random combination. I'd say it was because IB was romanceable to everyone but dwarves and that Varric is female dwarf only.
It sounded random to me, too, but I meant it would be the situation that would have happened if they couldn't get Iron Bull fixed in time and there wasn't another bi male to fill the gaps. Not necessarily just gay dwarves, but possible straight female ones, as well.

You and me both! I find intelligence incredibly sexy. Plus, Solas seems like a nice, respectful and open-minded dude, and all of those things are very sexy. He seems like a perfect LI so far! Unless he's secretly evil ![]()

i feel like the more days that go by, the more I'm starting to really believe that Solas is a LI. They have said that they want to vary the romances so there is something for everyone. Solas is a freaking LI. Like so come on .. Varric (as much as I love him) would be a straight!dwarf option only, and I really couldn't see him as a romance.. He's more like my best friend and brother. (doubt he would make as good bro turned romance like Garrus) . Blackwall is .. Blackwall. A grey warden who is a grey warden. He'll die in the near future it seems. No more tragic romances please.. Not a Thane 2.0 where he is destined to die a lot faster than you ..
ANNYYYWAAAAAAY. Solas LI confirmed.
I hope I didn't make Blackwall or Varric for LI people mad, sorry if I did. But that's how I see it ![]()

That's actually kind of plausible now, I think. I mean, I want the game to be as good and polished as possible but all the torturous waiting ![]()
