Okay, so I'm really hoping we get to go with Solas or have him stay with us because...Solas I love you...but he's an idiot. 

• He gave his ball to Corypheus (great idea btw)
• he plans on telling Lavellan about EVERYTHING then he's like "eeeeh no vallaslin instead"
• THEN he dumps her

It's obvious: Solas is shite at planning things. We can't leave him alone for five minutes. I don't think he's planning on destroying the world but by the Creators if we don't get to him soon he might by accident! HE'LL PULL THE WRONG LEVER OR SOMETHING WE HAVE TO HELP HIM. D:

I liked the film!abe look. He was more amphibian than h0mo sapien. But at the time he was closer to human but in the comics today he does become more frog-like. What I didn't like in the movie was the romance. Hellboy and liz?! And then the pregnancy. wtf? prego?

 

Yeah, the Hellboy and Liz romance was also a bit strange. But it doesn't bother me as much as the Abe characterization, because at least they did make something compelling with it. I think they also retconned the fact that Hellboy had known her since she was a very small child. Or if they didn't retcon it, they hardly mentioned it so that it didn't come across as squick. 

 

Still wish they would have just had Kate in the films.

We see him make a decision on the hoof in All New Faded for her when he actually see's the monster his friend has become... He very quickly verbalises all the options ("Let me think, let me think, let me think...") and concludes that a last minute attempt should be made to save her...

 

Unfortunately it is already too late and perhaps he should have recognised that? However, what the attempt does do is give the spirit a few moments of respite as herself and to make the conscious decision for him to kill her... Which he does... Cass is put virtually in the same situation and also eases a friend's passing...

 

The quest begins when we first speak to Solas in Skyhold at that point, he is attempting not to think about the trouble she is in? Why? Why doesn't he rush out immediately and save her? Perhaps he doesn't want to be distracted? Perhaps he doesn't believe she is in real peril? Perhaps he fears if he acts his true identity will be discovered? Perhaps he lacks the power to rescue her alone?

 

What this means is, SOLAS DOES NOT ABANDON HIS FRIENDS, even if it means a risk to himself. He is not cold or calculating, if there is a possibility of success he won't stand aside, he will act... We also see an unexpected side to him wrath... He kills the mages without hesitation.

Yeess. Abe is my favorite character in the comics, so filmAbe has always been a bit bizarre. I do like the version of him in the animated films though.

Abe's my fav character too! I discovered the comic-books after watching the first movie, BUT now that I've read the comic-book, I just can't look at the movie the same way, that's for sure. Abe's animated version is pretty cool indeed Badass, nice and fun, and I loved hearing Doug Jones voicing him

I think it is a combination of game mechanics [he simply can't rush off without the consent of the player], and lacking the power to rescue her alone. I don't think Solas is really all that powerful for the vast majority of the game. He probably could have gone off to save her, but he might get killed in the process. And at the moment, the most important thing is getting the orb back from Corypheus. 

 

Does the quest even begin if you are his enemy, I wonder? I know most of the other companion quests refuse to trigger unless you are at a certain approval level. So if that's the case, then he had every reason to believe the Inquisitor would help him.

You have a DLC that brings Solas back including tearful yelling and smoochies?  Because seriously nothing is soothing my soul until I get my maudlin man back.

Ah! I'm the weirdo who prefers the first one. It had some of the best lines - "My uncle used to say that we like people for their qualities but we love them for their defects."

Oh, oh, and this one: "What makes a man a man? A friend of mine once wondered. Is it his origins? The way he comes to life? I don't think so. It's the choices he makes. Not how he starts things, but how he decides to end them."

 

And my favorite moment is when Hellboy talks to Liz, telling her that he loves her, that... That he wishes he could do something about THIS - and he just gestures to his face and you just feel his heartbreak at being different in a way no person could ever overlook. And yet, he still wants her. And if HE is enough, for her, can't that be enough? Forever? It was the best moment of vulnerability ever.

I do think the film could have been edited to be a bit more crisp in it's pacing, but I'm super nitpicky about staying succinct. As you can imagine the new Hobbit films are torture for me. 

BUT from an art stand point - Hellboy taught me how important it is to switch color temperature. Seriously, go watch the film again. He always juxtaposes a warm scene with a cool one. Moving from hot yellows, golds, reds, and olives to cool midnight blues. It's a beautiful film just to watch for color progression and theory on its own. Whomever was in charge of the color scripting was a genius. 

It's funny 'cause I discovered Hellboy in 2004, and I never fully understood that quote... until DAI and Solas.

Yes, I agree, I think he doubts his powers will be sufficient to save her... But interestingly when he gets angry he suddenly has the power to blast those mages to the abyss all by himself.
