I've always wondered if the story of Fen'Harel emprisoning the gods isn't another thing the Dalish got wrong. Maybe Solas was trying to protect them from something/someone and the time to break the barriers is close. He needs to open the portals and he needs his key for it. Maybe the Dread Wolf wasn't walking the Fade hunting for prey but trying to guard his people...his fear of dying alone would make more sense if he didn't exactly chose to imprison his people and having to take care of them would make his break-up with Lavellan more meaningful.
I'm a bit silly.
That's not silly at all
. If there's anything we've learned from DA:I, it's that history is fallible, and Dalish legends especially so. And we're all just bumping theories around here.
I'm still not sure where I stand on this particular issue actually. On the one hand, he doesn't have a high opinion of the pantheon, so he could have just locked them out of spite, especially if some them were responsible for Mythal's murder. On the other hand, he really misses what once was, and he feels a lot of guilt for what he's done, so it can't have been all hate.
But I still don't see how setting the gods free can be of benefit to anyone but themselves. They're likely mad and vengeful at this point, and relatively weak. I'm hedging my bets on Solas planning to either preserve that prison, or looking for a way to acquire their godhood without setting them free, or acquiring whatever legendary weapon he used to pit the pantheon and the Forgotten Ones against each other.
