I think we should drop the Greg Ellis thing now.  Otherwise we run the risk of getting nasty and the thread closing.

Let's go back to Solas.  Do people think the Orb was always meant to be a tool of destruction, or was that just what Cornflakes thought?

My bad for bringing it up.

Someone needs to take Gregs twitter away. He's very naughty.

And lots of people put all kinds of stuff they shouldn't on the internet. Best just to block it And call it a day, usually.

*yawn*

I got a few hours more of sleep anyway. I'm sad Liz won't draw the comic so I'm gonna draw it myself.

Sorry.

Wasn't directed just at you, don't worry!  It's a topic that made a lot of people curious.  But it is time to move on.

So... Solas' orb. Always for destruction?

Perhaps it was mulitpurpse.

"Fen'harel's orb. Good for back scratching, decoration, destruction of the known world and much much more! Only ninety nine sovereigns!"

I'll think of something. But first. Sleep. <3 Then more doodles!

YAY! I totally love you.

I thought, maybe it helps you if I illustrate. The quality is... uh... kept low on purpose. To give you an incentive to improve.

Spoiler because... ah, you know... because it's crap:

I think it depends.  Is it just a source of raw power?  Then it could be used for anything and Cornflakes just used the power to do what he wanted.  If the power was limited to opening doors into the Fade?  I wouldn't have called it an orb of destruction.

You know, I'm curious about whether it was his, was Mythal's, or was one of a set and there may be others out there to find.  (The orb, not Greg Ellis.  :P)  Was the Dread Wolf the only one to have a focus or did each of the gods have their own or were they like "god screwdrivers" and there were bunches of them laying around once upon a time?

I don't think so, actually.

Maybe they channel their power into the orbs for safe keeping when they enter unethera?

I think that the orb wasn't made specifically for destruction. I think it could be like a kind of battery, from which one could draw extra power whenever they needed it, possibly primarily for entering and exiting the Fade.

I also don't think it was a unique object since Solas refers to it as "foci" as in plural (from what I remember of his post-Haven cutscene). Perhaps the orbs were popular among the Arlathan nobility? Or every member of the elven pantheon had one.

So... Solas' orb. Always for destruction?

I am going to say no. I think the primary function is to house magic, and rip holes in the fade. But less like the breach, and more like we see the Inquisitor doing in Adamant.

I have two thoughts about the orb, depending on whether or not it existed before there was a need for the elven gods to be sealed away:

If it existed before: Perhaps Solas, being not of Elgar'nan and Mythal's brood, needed some additional power source to become godlike. So in this scenario, the power more likely comes from the pantheon itself than Fen'Harel. Fen'Harel was probably like Ghilan'nain, a self made mage who became powerful enough that one [or all] of the gods saw use for him.

If it did not exist before: Generally the purpose of a foci is to be able to cast powerful spells without draining mana completely, or destroying the caster in the process. I'm bringing in some outside dragonage magic lore for this. But in a lot of genres, any powerful being essentially has a 'bucket capacity' of magic. That's the maximum amount of magic they can possibly channel. Fen'Harel has a problem. He needs to trap the elven gods, and he needs to cast a spell big enough to do so. But there's a good chance funneling that much magic will cause the spell to become unstable, or destroy the caster.

It could be that he is the one who deliberately severed connection with his vast amounts of magic, putting it into an orb so that the orb could take the 'brunt' of the discharge. This increased his capacity for magic, and helped ensure his survival after trapping the gods.

To go full speculation mode: Solas is tricky, and he does imply that he likes seeing those who grab for power be destroyed by the methods used to obtain said power. I would not be surprised if Fen'harel might have created this orb by shopping it around to various gods and getting their assistance in creating it. Who wouldn't want an orb that could amplify your magic? If they were cracked out on red lyrium at the time, they might not have even considered Fen'Harel was planning to use it for something else.

No, please, the veil is torn, the Fourth Wall was busted, I live in a world of chaos and demons pouring out of all the things now anyway. Please share it.

Ok, I can't find the thing, maybe because I'm looking for the wrong phrases but there's dozens of posts there and I am not reading through them all tonight, so just to paraphrase:

Spoiler

In the same way, just because a VA doesn't play the game, it doesn't mean they don't love their characters. They may not know them within the context of the game, but if that's the way we're going to look at it, we as recipients don't know the director's notes in their scripts either, or all those other teeny bits that make up a character that show up in development, but don't make it to shipping.

Basically, in the end, all that matters is if they've done their jobs well, and I think in Inquisition, they have.

Please, one of the artists here, please do this. An open tent with a few unrecognizable heads (and a recognizable Caddius), sobbing sounds oozing out, guarded by stern-faced (dwarven?) men with big beards, some "Valentine's day celebrations. Don't disturb." sign next to it. I haven't understood how exactly you wish bring in the Colonel but do so.

+1 !!
