I actually thought that dalish elf in the hinterlands was Merrill originally.... the one in his little veil fire mission. Fail. Names and outfits were similar and I didn't hear her properly due to bandit douchebags attacking mid convo.

Huzzah!  3000 has not yet come and gone.  Between this thread and The Last Court I kicked my kids out to school an hour ago for a single, glorious day of DA:I alone and I've not yet turned on the TV.

 

I do think Lavellan means a great deal to Solas.  Everything he saw before they got close confirmed his belief that elves have turned into a mockery of their former selves and that his sealing away the pantheon was wrong.  Then she shows him that the elves are not a uniform mass of uselessness and ignorance but are individuals, people who deserve a chance to have better lives.  In short, she fundamentally changes his despair at the loss of everything he cherished about "his people" by showing that, despite the differences, he can still connect with and love the people who have evolved from them.

 

Whether that's enough to change his plans in any way I don't know.  I would hope it alters the most apocalyptic leanings into something a little more...life friendly.

It is a bit sad when you think about when Solas chose to try and reveal the truth to Lavellan. She'd just gone through the temple of Mythal, learned ancient elves were still a thing, and heard from an outside source that Fen'Harel wasn't the one who betrayed the empire. 

 

Before that, it probably had never been a possibility. It would have been his word against centuries of legend and lore. But then, there's an opportunity to escape that. Doubt has already come in from an outside source.

 

Still backs down, but. It must have very briefly felt like vindication.
