And now that I think on it, it makes me consider the possibility of them all just being powerful mages who got "godly" after defeating the creators, like what I think Mims or Caddius was saying earlier, and then they let their power go to their head, causing all these issues, including the taint's release, which made them necessary to seal away.
My theory is that the pantheon might have started with noble intentions. Bring order to a chaotic world, where previously there was no order. Magic was a lot more powerful than it is now. Imagine that before civilization really sets in- it would have been chaos. Then you have these dragons flying around. If they were extremely powerful mages, then they might be the first to have mastered control over their abilities. They look like gods to their people.
But they could have also been super powerful spirits, or some sort of other 'unknown' creation. Ultimately the outcome is the same- while in the possession of godlike powers, they were not truly gods in the sense that the Maker is. They were susceptible to 'mortal' failings.
Over time- and when you are immortal, you have endless time- their noble goal got corrupted. They became more focused on holding power and being treated like gods. What had once been perhaps a benign ruse to bring people together, now spiraled into legitimate vanity. They started to mess around in things they shouldn't, either because their power was being threatened or because they were so arrogant that they thought they actually were gods.
Once the blight got ahold of them, it exacerbated their desire to hold onto power, and things just collapsed.
