I love my Lavellan and Solas both being Rift Mages because I can headcanon them training together and spending hours researching with each other. Plus, it's handy to have two Rift Mages because, well, you know.
Same here. I initially chose rift mage because I wanted it for the roleplaying experience (my Lavellan wouldn't pass up the opportunity to figure out how to use the weird glowing hand) and because "Your Trainer" amused me. But I fell in love with the spec itself. Pull of the Abyss makes me feel like I'm a Mass Effect Space Wizard again, and I will never get tired of stonefisting enemies off high places (screw you, archers!) It just gives you so much control over the battlefield, so I can sit back and herd unsuspecting enemies into the path of my Warriors, and then keep them in place while Solas and I call down elemental fury upon them. And if anyone even tries going near us I can just keep knocking 'em down.
I was initially excited for KE, but it's so broken that I don't really find it all that fun. If I wanted to tank I would've played a warrior.
I would be lying if I said I didn't pick Knight Enchanter to gain Solas' approval, but I didn't even get the conversation. T_T Vivianne commented on it, even Sera, but nada from Solas. It is a fun spec though!
How do you get Solas to comment on it? I figured I was just too far in the game, but I only got Vivi and Sera to comment on it.
Solas comments on all mage specs. Companion comments on specializations have been pretty buggy. Someone here (jellobell?) figured out that if you do All New, Faded for Her before getting your spec, it messed things up and he wouldn't comment. So try getting your spec before doing All New.
Yeah, I managed to get him to comment by finishing up all of the specialization stuff before doing ANFFH. I'd gotten the Fade Kiss and the tea scene, and had accepted the quest, but I just hadn't done it yet. Somehow that made the dialogue trigger properly. I've only tried it as a Rift Mage, though.
Also, I'd recommend doing your spec before ANFFH anyways if you want to become a rift mage. You get a cool extra dialogue choice during the mission if you do. Doesn't affect much other than the health of the pillars you have to destroy, but I really liked that the option to call attention to your rift magery was there.
