I just stumbled across an intriguing bit of info on Tumblr, a tumblrite was at SDCC and talking to the devs was told that Marketing was directly responsible for the last two LI not being revealed. Apparently they feel that "mystery" is needed.

 

*edit Which frankly made me facepalm. Because it isn't Mystery, everyone gets all settled on who they want, some people know they have them or that they don't and then there are the Viv, Varric, Blackwall, and Solas fans who have no idea. It isn't mystery, it's frustrating. Though the idea of it being in order to create a sense of mystery makes it that much more frustratingly stupid. Jeebus.

And, aside from Varric, we're a pretty minor portion of the forum. Everyone else is interested, but you can just feel how the atmosphere has shifted in this place. The Romance thread devolved into some kind of horror show before being euthanized, Blackwall's thread is dead, Vivienne's thread has slowed, and so has our lovely little thread [PAT-PAT]. Varric's is the only one gaining steam, but Varric is an established character who has a lot of things worth discussing. Solas, Vivienne, and Blackwall are all unknowns. There's not much to say right now.

 

I'm not in that field of work. so maybe they have charts and data points telling them otherwise, and maybe this is the best way to do it. Perhaps cooling things down on the forums is a smart idea. But it doesn't seem that way, and I'm no longer excited about this LI business. I'm just getting anxious.

 

In other news, it is really hard to make Solas's nose in the Sims 2 Create-a-Sim.

He talked about how all of the romances were very well-written but that he felt like Dorian’s was really something special. He also mentioned that he didn’t understand why they hadn’t announced the last two romances, but the marketing team insisted there had to be some mystery.

 

So... worst case scenario: we don't find out through official channels, because marketing wants a few LI to remain mysteries until the game. But that is WORST CASE SCENARIO WHOOP WHOOP WHOOP, and not what I'm actually expecting. I'm thinking my might not release the race-gating.

Wow! What a grand opportunity that person had to have a sort of off the record personal interview! Right place right time I'd say. 

As for the last two LIs being a 'mystery', that's... disappointing. I won't lie in saying the topics of discussion here are dwindling and I find myself lurking more than posting because I don't have as many fruitful things to say. Got to wait until another tasty morsel of information is tossed at me.

Annndddd as for the Solas tag on tumblr... I'm very amused. At least on my computer I usually just get Solas and the occasional foot picture. But on my phone... I get everything BUT Solas. Like... different languages, I think some band, AND feet.

Ugh... "mystery?" Really?  I second the fact that the only people who actually care are the hardcore fans (and only a portion of them at that), most of those fans have pre-ordered the game already (except maybe me... that's right Bioware. I'm holding my money hostage now.  Sh!t just got real.  ) and it's really not fair that the majority do get to know, and that last bit who doesn't?  Half of them know they're just waiting to be disappointed, and at this point the other half may well end up feeling bad about celebrating out of sympathy.  I don't really see how this creates any sort of hype at all, since so far all I see is character threads drying up for lack of anything to talk about, the romance thread getting closed because it was wandering way off topic, and a whole lot of venting and ranting all around.

 

Gheh.  Sorry for the negativity guys, but right now I'm really annoyed.

the "mistery" thing is quite idiotic, at least for me. If they wanted to have "mistery", they shouldn't heave reveiled none of the LI.

is even more annoyng because is a feature that is interesting mostly for hardcore fans, or at least the ones that are enough interested to visit the forum and twitter. the masses would simply look at the main site (where STILL there isn't even the informations about the personalization of the Inquisitor like sex and races. and THIS is what marketing SHOULD look at  ) where things like the romances aren't even mentioned.

Wow, I finally take a few days off the forum (Hi everyone!) and then I come back to read these silly things, I'm not sure why in the world they would do such a thing. Take one look at the character threads and it's pretty obvious that most of us are frustrated and just want to get it over with by now, I can't wrap my head around why they would make that even worse by doing these kind of things.. The marketing decisions alone are enough mystery for me   But I didn't come back here to be all negative, would it help lighten the mood if I said I noticed that the kitten that's going to be part of my family soon is Solas in cat form? (It's a she but that's the only difference) she can sleep anywhere, might be a bit sarcastic, judges you from a distance, and keeps calm in pretty much any situation  She's such a cutie patoot. And the next convention/event was at the end of August or something right? So maybe they might decide to drop the whole "mystery" thing and announce something there? I can dream, right..

In a way you've hit the nail on the head about the main website, because actually there is no real information there about who you can romance.   It says that Dorian is gay because they feel that is a big deal but it actually doesn't say he is a romance option.   So far as the main site is concerned it is just an aspect of his character which has contributed to who he is today.

 

Most of what we know about romances seems to have come from Twitter or the Q&A or whatever and then posted in the forums.    To be honest I'd rather there was some consistency over how information is revealed.   In the past I was someone who only went to the main site before the game, until I realised that you were almost expected to have come to the forums or consulted Wiki if you didn't want to mess up on starting a romance or maintaining one.    I'd also realised that it might be helpful in deciding whether to play male or female.    I opted for male first run through with DAO because in the past the options for a male PC seemed greater than those for a female.   Then I met Alistair and Zevran and realised what a mistake I had made.

 

I'm okay right now because I have developed a male and a female character that I can run with and who I choose for the first run through is almost entirely dependent on whether Solas is a romance or not for my female PC.   Race should not be an issue because she is an elf.     I'm also slightly wary about being made to play Dalish as I'd prefer the irony of a despised city elf saving everyone and that goes for the Dalish as well.

 

I'm also hoping for something more about classes soon, particularly mage classes.   I'm really curious about Rift Mage.

Yeah, I'm really interested in Knight Enchanter but we know so little on specializations. Maybe they're showing more on them at Gamescom.

This just sucks.  I am (ostensibly) a grown-up and realize that life is not fair, but this really should have been an all-or-nothing reveal, because rewarding some fans with information and withholding it from others in so arbitrary a fashion is a great way to kill fun, enthusiastic threads like this one. Another month like this and there'll be nothing but tumbleweed rolling through here.

It's not like the other romances were HUGE reveals, the small niche of fans on this forum make it seem like it is. People apparently think that Bioware is putting an emphasis on romance when it is not the case. What they are putting focus on is: exploration, characters and story. So in my opinion I think it would be best if they just get it over with unless somehow revealing the last two romances spoils the plot. Maybe they're just dragging it out a bit to keep us hooked, which is working.

Okay I'm going to put my optimistic, glass half full, hat on here and suggest that perhaps the mystery is connected to the story in some way, so whilst the remaining LIs could potentially be romanced, there are specific plot elements that mean it may never happen or it the way you'd expect.   We've already suggested the possible complications of Solas' close connection with the Fade which could impact on relationships.   They've suggested something about a hidden agenda with Vivienne.   Blackwall is something of a mystery in himself and Varric has that odd relationship with his crossbow.     For example, may be you can only romance Varric if you enable him to have closure over the real Bianca.   

 

I know this theory isn't perfect but it is a more positive way of viewing the delay over the reveal.     I have to admit otherwise the "keeping the mystery" does seem a bit lame when they have revealed so much about the others, although from a cynical point of view I can see why they chose to reveal the ones they did.
