I would be a very boring and dead main character, so I usually RP. Even if I don't always write my stuff down, I like to have a little internal storyline going on about my character and their adventures.

Imma be honest - without the dying part - would play 'boring Mims' as a character.  Would probably love her to death.  You have no super-powers, you have to rely pretty much on everyone else and you're just kind of this chill tag-along.  Do you have sassy - one liners?

Thank you everyone who answered my question!  It was interesting reading your responses.  As for me: I tend to pick a few traits and the most basic outline and go from there (so my first character was 'lesbian Dalish mage.  Quite religous.  A little apprehensive around shems.  Kind of flirty.')  However, my three canon characters are all sarcastic, intelligent lady mages who are either elven or romance elves.  But when it comes to specifics they're pretty different.  I mostly have fun seeing where the character take me from the basic outline (and how they sometimes end up running away from the outline...)

EDIT: So... I don't self interest aside from the sarcasm thing.

I thought she looked ok I'm not usually down with making my characters look gothic or emo I just wanted something a little different...but then when I saw her talking with Solas? Nope!

She isn't a lesbian like you said with yours but I just don't see her with anybody so I'm going to delete her and make another soon.  :D

She actually looks alright, but I think that's just too much Lavellan for Solas to handle  She looks a fair bit tougher than him, hard to explain.

Whoa. Catching up on the forums this morning was emotionally exhausting. And now I'm struck by all of my many unrelated feels.

Share in the pain (Solavellan.. kind of... art under the tag):

*snip*

Nature is merciless. We humans have developed ways to shelter ourselves from its cruelty to a certain extend. We can often afford to show mercy and many people do. And I am very very grateful to moder civilization for protecting me. We are all subject to nature's rules like any other animal, though. Whether animals only kill their own when they have to, we do not know. I once read that dolphins bully and even rape their own sometimes. Perhaps it serves survival too. Maybe unwarranted cruelty is not only a human flaw. In Alaska I saw two young wolves or coyotes (not sure) on the road. Siblings probably. One was limping badly (but did not bleed, old injury?). The other carried a deer leg. One would think they leave injured pack members behind or kill them when they become useless. Apparently not necessarily.

There is so much we don't know about the social dynamics among other species.

Nor is there consensus how "good" and moral mankind is by default. We certainly are social beings. And we evolve and adept. For better or worse. If statistics on violent crimes are any indicator, we have become a lot less violent (even though the current problem with terrorism and wars might not make it seem that way). I like to see mankind like the krogan, slowly outgrowing our aggression as we become less reliant on primal instinct and brute force. It's a natural process that takes its time but is necessary. So that's a hopeful prospect. I certainly support a positive outlook on humanity, even if I lack faith.

On topic: I usually self-insert a bit on my first PT. But not fully. Nor do I have elaborate backstories for my characters. Just a rough sketch. Sometimes I don't put any thought into them at all. My character's identity forms as the story progresses.

Hey, y'all! Long time no-see! I took a bit of a step back because I felt like I was being sad for too long, but I'll pop back in now and then.

BTW a buddy of mine may be joining the thread - she just finished the Solas'mance the other day...on a totally blind run other than knowing the rest of us are super-duper depressed.

Ohhhhh the pain. notimpressed-plz.png?1

Lol she kinda does have a qunari esque look about her. Most lavellans I see here look all kind and sweet, that one doesn't look so innocent.

I don't think Solas would have the balls to dump her or ask to remove her markings.

Before the Agricultural Revolution, hunter-gatherers relied heavily on oral tradition on things like stars to guide them and tell them what time of year it was, what plants were safe to eat, good hunting grounds, good stories to share, that kind of thing. Their elders would be among the most knowledgeable, which is why we find a lot of evidence of Neolithic humans who have all sorts of bone issues and probably couldn't walk that seem to have been buried with their stretcher with a lot of dignity at a very old age. While it was definitely in people's self-interest to keep these people alive, there's also the fact it would have been their father or grandfather or what have you. I don't know much about pre-historic religion. I believe it was the Neanderthals who first seemed to practice ritual burial and show signs of religious thought. Religion probably started as animistic, trying to categorize events as diverse as fire, winter, death, and the Aurora Borealis.

Religion has a lot of cultural value, providing a sense of 'us' across a large number of people, providing some with the meaning in life they crave, a gathering point for the community and a vehicle for charity. However, I have always been somewhat confused by those who claim that a world without religion would fall into ruin. I won't go so far to say that the majority of humanity is 'moral', I think most people are too complicated and flawed to fit in there. But there's a lot of people who aren't complete jerks to one another, because they're busy worrying about themselves.

As a dark side-note to this talk of pre-historic humanity, I'm going to go off on one of my pet peeves. :P

I've often heard the claim that, "No species kills its own except humanity," as a part of an anti-humanity diatribe. Well, the thing is, that's a load of tripe. Most species kill their own. Plenty of animal mothers devour some of their young to survive themselves.

Our own simian cousins wage war for territory in the jungle, complete with memorable warlords.http://news.discover...ar-behavior.htm

(Not mentioned here is that there was once a study of a particularly powerful chimp group. The scientists were bewildered at the size of this group's territory compared to its neighbors, and kidnapped its leader for study. The other chimpanzee troops invaded and slaughtered most of the powerful group, reducing to a bare handful and almost no territory. Horrified but fascinated, the scientists re-released the leader. He promptly took control of his tiny troop, and, through ingenious guerilla warfare and recruitment, reclaimed all of his territory and then some.)

And there's similar idealization of our hunter-gatherer roots, that we didn't have war or poverty or class distinctions.

Mongols were hunter-gatherer nomads.

Sarmatians.

Scythians.

Huns.

It's a brutal, tough life, and there's evidence we were committing genocide on our enemies before the Agricultural Revolution.

(It must be admitted that, the Mongols at least, did allow women to enter positions of power and treated them with more dignity, as it seems the rougher one's existence is, the less enthusiastic one is to oppress useful people.)

In summation: every creature on this planet is an *******. Especially cats. (I still love my cat.) We all suck equally, and Solas especially. See, I kept it on topic. Hurray!

But seriously. Keep posting awesome historical tangents. I very much enjoy them. :)

Cats are literal serial killers.  Of my two, one is fat and the other is clumsy, and they're still tiny furry badasses. (Well, one of them's tiny.  ^_^ )

And yeah, Kappa Nekko, there's been evidence of sex slavery among dolphins, which is...shocking, to say the least. :( But then you also get stories of them saving people.

Too many awesome Lavellan in this thread, hell yeah.

Mine does have a kind cute face, at first, but then she never smiles, has very angular features and a very cold stare, which balances it out.

And on most of my post-breakup screenshots, she has permanent frowning eyebrows, as if she's gonna f*ck some sh*t up.

My Trev on the other hand, looks way softer.

They can also masturbate into dead fishes. And sea otters can rape baby seals for several days, if they don't have anyone else around to satisfy their needs, killing them in the process. Nature is awesome, alright!

So the real lesson is that there is the potential for good and bad in every being on this planet, and thinking in terms of black and white will get you nowhere. It's more complicated than that, as Solas says. (But for the sake of my emotive mood, I'm going to stick with my "everything and everyone sucks" mantra today.)

It's a good thing my cat doesn't currently have access to the great outdoors (high-rise condo), or she'd be murdering so many birds. As it is, she murders so many of my fingers, over and over.

My Lavellan disapproves of being called a cutie pie.

I loooove my Revas Lavellan so much. I don't think she looks to sweet though. I don't know if it's wrong to have a girl crush on your own character but I do. is that kind of like self-love? In a non-masturbatory way, anyway.

My backstory is this: She was Dalish. Her life before the inquisition doesn't matter. It's all changed now anyway.

I'm home finally so I'm gonna go try to catch up on what I missed.
