My problem with your arguments is that elven is given to us as a cipher, not a complete language with grammar rules. It's kind of meant to be translated literally.

It's presented to us in-game that it shouldn't necessarily be taken as such, though.

Var'landivalis him sa'bellanaris san elgar
Melanada him sa'miras fena'taldin (word missing)
Nadasalin telrevas ne suli telsethenera
Tarasyl'an te'las vehn'ir abelath'vir (word missing)

Even with assistance from your elf, we managed only a partial translation. Elven is often a game of intents, not direct mapping of phonetic meaning. That means it's a mess.

Our belief transformed into everything. (assertation/problem? uncertain)
All time is transformed into the final/first death (uncertain),
Inevitable/threatened victory and horrible/promised freedom in the untorn veils, (uncertain)
Where the sky is held up/back, where the people give/gain love that is an apology/promise from/to....(missing subject, uncertain)

....the hell.  I just saw that dress on another site, and it was white and gold...and then when I scrolled away and back, it was blue and black again.

Blood magic.

If that elf is Solas I'm not sure if I'd trust it, he's the king of twisting his words and meanings to hide information. I'm just like second guessing everything he's ever said, and then I'm throwing it in the garbage until DLC resolution.

See that's interesting to me, since the sentence would have been a perfect translation without the word emma. Literally 1 to 1 substitution. Even if elven is a translation of intent, what part of "I am" is in the intended translation?

"What we had was real."

I'm not second-guessing that or any of the other romance-specific content.  Whatever else Solas lies about, he's clearly not lying about how he feels for Lavellan.  The rest of it though, giving him the twitchy side-eye.

Maybe it is real to him, but what is reality to a god? Also, I don't trust him not to kill my lavellan to achieve what he thinks to be right. I still love him to death, I just don't trust him until I have more meta knowledge on what it is he's up to. There's just so many unanswered questions.

I like to think what he couldn't tell Lavellen, he tells his secrets to his waifu pillow. It's a sort of a way to vent of whatever is pent up.

edit: oh, I made myself sad.

But elven was its own language once upon a time, with its own grammar rules, syntax, structure, connotations, etc.

*de-lurks* This is my Lavellan I recently made to replay the Solas romance.  Her name is Aela, after Aela the Huntress in Skyrim :P

Spoiler

Wow, she's gorgeous. That bone structure. *_*

Oh, I wouldn't trust the egghead as far as I could throw him, and let's just say that I don't have very high strength :D I do believe he genuinely loves Lavellan.  Whatever that means to him and what it means going forward is anyone's guess.

The more I see of "gods" in the setting, the more I start to think there's nothing inherently special about them, no divine spark or anything like in, say, the Forgotten Realms setting.  They're just really f***ing powerful.

What InkQuest said.

I don't think we're communicating properly. I am quite aware that elven is presented as a full language.

This is me being skeptical of what I'm told vs. what I'm shown. We're told that elven is a complex language full of interpretations. What we're given is a 1 to 1 lexicon of substitution. This is me meta-translating.

I'd have to agree that the elvhen pantheon are probably a lot less mystical than what we would think  "gods" to be.. but I also think that their perception of reality is something that could be completely different than our own. Listening to Solas describe how the world and magic was before the veil... I think that sort of experience would change the way you see the world I would think.

OT: any of you guys ever heard of Medieval Babes?

(Or medieveal baebes) heh.

They sing stuff. Or used to.

Found example.
Mediaeval Baebes - Märk Hur Vår Skugga:

Spoiler

Anyway the point is that it's kind of cool music. That example is my personal favorite.

I really like Mediaeval Baebes; I discovered them on Last.fm while reading the Outlander series years ago. My fav song is this one. Have you heard of Faun? They're kind of on the same vein. Unda is pretty nice.

On topic: Anyone think Solas can play an instrument, or would be interested in learning? He's probably too academically focused to spend the time, imo. Have we even seen any instruments other than the lute in the games? I honestly can't remember.

Edit: put the vid under a spoiler for size.

Yeah, getting the idea it's about the screen being used to view it.

I checked the light "gold" (as I see it) and the light "blue", it's in that color scope, independent of the monitor.

The darker shades are the same color range, only slightly different and, of course, darker.

The color pick of the "blue" is in the background color, so it's some sort of dirty "bluish gray".

I'm fairly certain the elf is indeed Solas. He's really good at feigning ignorance when it suits his purpose. I just wonder why he wouldn't give the full translation, because he quiet obviously could if he wanted to.

See that's interesting to me, since the sentence would have been a perfect translation without the word emma. Literally 1 to 1 substitution. Even if elven is a translation of intent, what part of "I am" is in the intended translation?

First I'd like to say I re-read the codex you originally provided, and I misread it originally so I apologise for that. I'm realising now that whoever wrote the inscription is the same person who provided the translation. This makes me wonder if perhaps the writer wrote different words for the different people who may read it? If so, then what you say would be correct.

As for what I'm saying, my best guess for what "I am" in the translation is is that it's what changes "solas" from "pride" to "arrogance". I think it's either:

Emma has multiple meanings depending on where it's at in the sentence
or
It's being used in a way we've not seen it before. Ancient Elven for "arrogance" could be "emma solas", similar to how in French "une pomme de terre" (lit. "apple from the earth") = "potato"

I hope this makes sense, I'm not the most eloquent person around.

or or the devs are just adding in bits of Elvien grammar and structure that we've never seen before to keep us on our toes.
