For some reason, I thought this fanart was pretty good. The abstract caricatures just makes you appreciate the characters even more. Look how the artist emphasizes their features! WITH EYES CLOSED!

It is good. The style is slight Picasso cubist phase but as you say the characters are completely recognisable.

It was my favorite of the novels before Last Flight. It's pretty rough, as I think Gaider would admit, but I just liked the Red Dawn "take back our country" vibe. Plus Flemeth hanging out with the Dalish.

I wonder how Asha'bellanar became affiliated with the Dalish. The clans know and respect her, they know where her hut is (as even Ariane simply stopped by to locate Morrigan), and they have stories about her that have no affiliation with Mythal.

I really can't tell you because the Dalish lore has become so muddled that it's difficult to set it all straight. In Origins days I would have said that the Dalish were comfortable with spirits, probably relating to friendly local spirits, and that they might have recognized Asha'bellanar as one of these. But now spirits are taboo among the Dalish, we're told, so there goes that theory. Between that and the three mage rule, the lore is all over the place. Maybe why I like Solas so much. He's more like what I thought the Dalish should be like, while the games' presentation of the Dalish is moving in a different direction.

Speaking of Last Flight... I guess the halla can still fly? Haven't seen anyone discussing this but it makes more sense than those delicate animals pulling aravels along the ground. I'm... not sure how that works, exactly, since they don't have wings like griffons. Magical beasts, I guess, at least when combined with keeper magic to keep the aravels aloft.

edit- Oh, and I wanted to apologize to Giton, nikki-tikki and others for ragging on your glitter gods. ;) It was mostly in fun (mostly) but I think it came off too negative in the end and I wouldn't want to harsh anyone's creative flair. Especially since there was a serious attack on art earlier in the week.

Lady boner? :P

Lol.

I like Merrill myself, but I can hardly defend her naivety or her obsession any more than I could defend Anders'. Not that I would. I can understand Anders, but that's not the same.

When it comes to Merrill, I see it differently. It's simply culture shock when it comes to shemlen society. Merrill is very adept when it comes to magic, explaining Dalish culture, the understanding she has about the Eluvians from what lore she has gathered, and even her concern over the plight of Andrastian elves and the decline of the Dalish shows that she fully understands the respective situations of the Elvhen. Considering she has lived for over a decade among shemlen and is now leading elves who were left homeless because of the Mage-Templar War, I doubt that she's dealing with culture shock anymore.

As for Merrill focusing on constructing her Eluvian, it held the potential to irrevocably change the lives of the People; Briala used the Orlesian network for her elven rebellion, and even Gaspard noted how the Eluvians could have forever changed the fate of the Orlesian Empire. As far as I'm concerned, TME and Inquisition proved Merrill right.

Solas and Merrill have some things in common: they see spirits as more complex than simple 'good' and 'evil', they don't view blood magic as inherently evil, and they want to help the People. I think that's why Solas struck a cord with me when I played as a Dalish protagonist. Solas completely changed how I planned to play an elven Inquisitor. While I didn't agree with everything he said, I enjoyed the character. Although I can't relate to the romantic overtones in the relationship that other people in this thread since my character befriended him, there's a lot about the character that resonates to me as a fan of the elves.

Similar to how I felt about Merrill's task in the previous story, I want to help Solas change the lives of the People for the better. I will be sorely disappointed if I'm forced to defend the status quo while Solas seeks to change things.

It wasn't what Merrill was doing that I had a problem with, but how she was doing it, not to mention the eluvian already proved to be dangerous and I consider it foolish that she thought she could handle messing with it with a demon's help by herself, no matter how "careful" she thought she was being. And her childishness goes beyond culture shock.

Yes she requested your help, in case she was possessed... but even that is rather foolish without the help of at least several mages. mages she should have sought from other clans at least.

However, I do respect that she's actually trying to better her people's lives while they sit around in muck and trees doing nothing.

I know what you mean; Aneirin almost speaks positively about the spirit who symbiotically joined with Wynne, and Zathrian didn't seem close-minded at the prospect of a benevolent poet tree. The lore is incredibly disjointed when it comes to the Dalish, particularly given how the previous game involved magic dying out among the tribes as the reason why mages moved around between clans.

That puts a new context on Emerald Knights riding halla into battle.

I hope you are aware that you have to leave this thread now? I am very sorry but we cannot tolerate such behavior here. Being dumped and heart-broken over Solas is an admission criterion. I suppose nobody told you so far. But if we make exceptions there we might just as well descend to chaos directly.

So, I may or may not be writing a research paper on moral development where I use dragon age as a reference for how adults percieve moral ambiguity, using examples of Solas's characterization and the mage/Templar war to illustrate the perception of good vs evil.

I figure if I have to write a research paper, why not use material I've already extensively researched...

And her childishness goes beyond culture shock.

Merrill cleansed the shard (which is why she isn't a ghoul like the elves who touched the remaining shards in the Elven Ruins in "Witch Hunt"), and she spoke to Audacity simply to learn blood magic in order to accomplish this task.

And if you're addressing her dry humor, I really don't see the big deal. I figured she was simply coping with a difficult situation. Similar to the elven Inquisitor, she's a Dalish elf in an ocean of Andrastian shemlen who don't really understand anything about her people, their culture, their religion, or the difficulties they face simply trying to survive day to day in a very hostile environment, not to mention she's living in the center of templar power over eastern Thedas. Honestly, it was incredibly isolating to play as a male Dalish elf, because there's this cultural rift that can never be bridged. I think it's very likely that Merrill felt the same way.

Yes she requested your help, in case she was possessed... but even that is rather foolish without the help of at least several mages. mages she should have sought from other clans at least.

She thought Audacity escaped, and I found that to be a prudent safety measure, considering that Hawke proved capable of defeating spirits and abominations over the years. And one of the reasons that the clans are nomadic is precisely because one clan can't reveal the location of another, as Merrill points out, so that would have been easier said than done.

However, I do respect that she's actually trying to better her people's lives while they sit around in muck and trees doing nothing.

I suppose we agree on respecting Merrill for that, at the very least. The clans are focused on simply surviving day to day, while Merrill tried to restore ancient technology that could potentially change the lives of the elves for generations. Solas is walking a similar road now, where he's focused on helping the People.

Out of curiosity, did anyone else initially think this thread's title was quoting New Vegas' "Old World Blues"? Before I realized it was a wolf howl, I thought Solas took a trip to Big MT.  :P

That could go in a lot of different directions. There is Solas' views on spirits (and how people from the mortal plane that shift their persona), his potential growth from 'trickster' to 'rebel' during the era of Elvhenan, his willingness to listen to different perspectives and concede that he's wrong on certain points, and the multitude of ideological perspectives among mages and templars about the war that both sides participated in.

Good luck with the paper! :)

My biggest issue with Merrill was her naivety.

My biggest issue with Merrill was that I couldn't kill her to get her armor. I got it now in DAI, so we are on good terms again.

(And on a more serious note: I actually respected her for doing her thing regardless of what the people around her said. She also handled criticism really well, with sarcasm but never with doubt. Not many people are so strong and content with their own opinion.)
