Also I think NPCs/companions should treat you very differently depending on what you go, it seems that does happen in DA2, but personally with what I know of Fenris' past and how much he dislikes mages it should be impossible for Hawke to romance him if they're a Mage themselves, not just difficult.

 

 

 

I'm not sure how it is with a romanced Fenris (because Anders! ), but the friendship story with Fenris is actually really sweet if Hawke is a mage. Like, you must really be good friends if he's able to overlook that.

Did we ever get an official timeline for DAI? I've noticed on tumblr a few ppl thinking Solas says "I love you" too quickly, but to me I head cannon that scene being after a year and few months after meeting. Not a few weeks. It takes days to weeks to get to one place to another. Plus building an army. So I head cannon it's been a year bout time they get to skyhold. Plus, they spend almost every day together or at least see each other.

Thoughts? We need a dev saying the time line. Lol.

Either way. I don't think him being in love at that point a stretch at all. Imo.

Eh, it depends, was your Dalish inquisitor born into the Dalish? Or were her parents city elves who fled? Was she born before or after that flight? If Dalish born, was one of them from outside the clan?
Don't feel stuck with Dalish elf names. The elvish language we have via the game is so incredibly sparse that to limit yourself to what is available via a not-so-good cipher is ... not the best idea. You're more creative than that! DO WHAT YOU WANT.

I knew I was making an archer for Solas so I looked up the Welsh word for arrow and corrupted it a bit. Voila! Saetha.

So just avoid names that are mash-ups like "Renesmee" or modern like "Kaidan" or spelled funky on purpose "Uniqua" or cheerleader-turned-stripper names, and you're good.

There's no canon for how long it took. I do think its unlikely that the Chantry would have gone for a very long time without electing a new Divine. So chances are the game takes place somewhere within the year-three year range. More likely siding towards the 'year', even if I personally like spending more time in a game world. 

 

My own head canon goes something like this:

 

- Six months in Haven

- Year and a half in Skyhold 

- Two years total spent in the fight with Corypheus. 

 

My Solas/Lavellan got together shortly after reaching Skyhold. Six months seems a decent amount of time to fall in love. So then they had a year and a half of a more normal relationship before breaking up.

Fenris doesn't hate mages in the same way Anders hates Templers. He just knows what a society in which mages are allowed to rule is actually like.

You get unavoidable rival points with Fenris if you're a mage when you first meet him (he's the only companion to disaprove of Hawke's class, in fact) but part of his frienship arc with a mage Hawke is him coming to respect them. He also gets on pretty well with Bethany (or so I've heard. I could never let my little bro die by rolling a non-mage) since she's pretty responsible with her magic.

 

What should stop Fenris' romance is the fact that during his Act II quest you can take on an elven woman as a slave.  I've heard that doesn't end his romance, just gives you rival points.

 

His rival romance with a mage is 'I hate you, I hate everything about you.' while his friendship romance with a mage is more 'I may not like magic, but I love you.  Let's see where we can take this.'

 

Yup.  Fenris isn't about hating mages as much as he is about hating slavery and power abuse.  He simply comes from a place where mages are the most powerful.  If he comes to trust Hawke, he doesn't see him the same way.

I got with my partner when I was 18 (nearly 25 now) and I've never been in another relationship so I don't know how normal talks like that go, but shouldn't that discussion take place earlier?

 

I like to imagine all the campaigns take a good few years, since we have such a big area to explore, but damn canon makes the Fifth Blight within a year. Granted we have all of Ferelden and Orlais to explore in Inquisition, and I can easily imagine there's days/weeks where our Quizzy essentially sits on their hands while scouting/war table missions gets done, so it's entirely possible it's a lot longer.

After seeing the Fade kiss in flycam, my headcanon is that Solas fell for Lavellan pretty quickly.  He wanted that kiss very, very badly and IMO had for quite a while.  And like you said, if Solas and Lavellan spend a lot of time together in Haven, regardless of how long the game takes I think he could very easily have been in love with her by Skyhold.

 

Solas and my Lavellan fell for each other really fast.  Partially because that's how the romance scenes wound up sussing out for me, and partially because I think it contributes to the heady, passionate, bittersweet nature of the romance.  At least that way they have as much time together as possible before everything goes FUBAR.

I personally feel that the timeline would have to be longer than a year but not much longer.

 

In alternate Redcliff you go forward in time one year. During this year Cory has raised an army of demons and assassinated Celene. Considering his assassin was Florianne and there's a lot of talk about how the ball wouldn't have happened without her I feel that Wicked Eyes and Hearts would have to be within a year after the inquisition was formed. How long it would take after that to Cory's defeat, I do not know.

 

IMO, not setting a clear timeline was a bad choice. For us it might not matter more than a bit of confusion, but for the writers? I'd hate to work with the ambiguity of it all...

 

Then again, I have a reincarnated!Lavellan headcannon. He didn't fall fast, he just found her again

I would say that is something that varies between character and character! In thinking about your own Lavellan, there's no reason to assume that the scene happens where it might in my mind. I know some people tend to push it towards the end, and have the events of Halamshrial actually be the starting point for when they actually get serious. Others might not have them intimately involved at all.

 

For my Lavellan, the discussion doesn't happen for a variety of reasons. She always knew there was some issue with Solas. She had no idea what it was, but she just assumed he had experienced some sort of trauma in the past and didn't want to talk about it. Elves often have bad lives in Thedas. So she wasn't really putting out feelers for a long time relationship.

 

Particularly when for the majority of their romance, she was the one that was potentially leaving to return back to her clan. So Solas wasn't motivated for obvious reasons, and Lavellan wasn't motivated because she hadn't decided that she would give up her clan for him.

Thanks for the banter.  I've heard the mage!Hawke version of that one.  Always makes me happy to hear it.

 

And the 'finest mage' line comes in his Act II Questioning Beliefs quest, but only if you didn't take the romance lines after his story.  I'm disapointed you don't get that line if you're fliriting with him.

I have to admit that Solas grew on me. At least he almost always had something to say when I got back into town. I hate the long stretches of silence (especially after finishing the main plot).

 

at first I thought he was just another of those elvy elves. You know, tree huggers and know-it-alls. And bald. With a nice accent at least. Dragged him along often because I liked his abilities ..and I had not read the description of re-spec amulets at the time *cough*

 

Then I finished and was blown away by the end, seeing references everywhere in hindsight. I am not that much into lore so I only skimmed the books i found. But after the end I wanted to know everything.

 

Well and then I saw the romance scene on youtube and well. I guess he had millenia to perfect his kissing technique, right? Almost everyone probably had that scene to prepare for the addon but I want my own so I am on my third playthrough now. Since Feb 15. I was home with a bad cold for a week so I had some time on my hand

 

And now I am a bit smitten and obsessed. Cannot get enough of the theories about what is probably going to happen.

I like to think he's intrigued by her, but with how standoffish he is with her the moment she wants to discuss the elves I find it hard (personally) to imagine there was anything on the lines of romantic yet. When she apologizes in elvish shortly after to him, on the other hand, I think that's when things start turning that way. ^.^
