I wouldn't worry about choices, Patrick wrote my favourite mission in ME3 (Tuchanka), and also Rannoch. The first one has so many possible outcomes, he handled it so well, and he gave us plenty of choices. Rannoch, if you work hard you can get the best outcome.

Yes, both of these missions have losses. As much as I want a happy ending, if the best we can get is a sacrifice mordin/legion style... I'll be okay with it. After some years of tears.

BUT team optimism is strong! I still believe we have hope for a good ending for him.

Wait what, we got a warning for being off topic?  Golly gee it's a wonder some of the other character threads are open at all if the Solas thread got a warning for it.  There's at least one that's more like a chat room than a character discussion, lol.  Oh well.

I know we worry about tragedy. But one thing I'll say about Weekes is that his tragic story arcs are not necessarily melancholic. Mordin and Legion [potentially] die fulfilling what it is they set out to do. Their deaths were more triumphant than depressing. 

 

I'm hoping that if Solas's story has to end in tragedy, it would be more along that line. You can make the audience feel 'good' about a character death if it is handled properly. Although it will be feelsy no matter what. 

 

Is it wrong to want another chance to lay him first???

 

And to be with him so he does not die alone... 

 

Oh, bloody hell, just the thought is upsetting.

On the subject of Solas mind-wiping Cole's memory of their conversation:

Back when I was figuring out the Dread Wolf thing, because years of resisting insane History Channel conspiracy theories has built up a reserve of mad theory-crafting , I was really creeped out by how Solas's knowledge dwarfed everything. The collective magical lore of Tevinter's finest, senior Enchanters of the Circle, Morrigan, and even Corypheus all paled in comparison. He shrugged off Cole's mind-reading abilities with a gentle smile, calmly explained veilfire and what have you after your other experts have admitted to complete ignorance, he knows the location and name of ancient fortresses with mysterious histories, and incinerates the Kirkwall mages in a split-second.

Even with the reduced power from his long slumber and the loss of the Orb, I get the feeling he's holding back a great deal, and still able to fight side-by-side with the elite of modern Thedas.

It reminds me of The Dresden Files, on the occasions early on in the series when Harry upsets a member of the Senior Council (the elite oligarchy of the White Council, the wizarding organization) and thinks about just how screwed he'd be if they got into a fight, because they've got centuries of knowledge and combat experience on him, if not in raw power.

Over the course of the series so far, he gets to some of the Senior Council members in action. It's always one of the highlights of a book.

A vampire tries to frame Ebenezar's ex-apprentice and causes all kinds of ruckus. At the end of the book, as Dresden is worrying about the vampire getting ready for another showdown, Ebenezar calls him on the phone and just says, "Turn on the TV."
Ebenezar went for the brute force approach and pulled a Soviet satellite out of the sky and dropped it on the vampire and his household.
In Turncoat, Listens-to-Wind, the kindly healer, goes head-to-head with the Skinwalker whose been running roughshod over Dresden and his allies for the entirety of the book, and is generally speaking one of the creepiest monsters I've seen in literature for awhile. Listens-to-Wind wins a shapeshifting duel handily, and sends the Skinwalker, howling with fear, into retreat. Him turning into a bear the size of a mini-bus was particularly great.
In TurnCoat, there's a big courtroom scene with hundreds of wizards. A certain scoundrel drops a mordite monster and covers the room in darkness while he flees. The mordite monster is a particularly nasty bit of work that kills on contact, and Dresden notes that it's a weakness of wizards that they'll light themselves up Gandalf style whenever it's dark, as an instinct. Which paints them as targets.
Langtry uses magic to coordinate the Senior Council, complete with mental blackboards and casually asking them to avoid dying.
While the White Council flees from an army of Fae in the Nevernever and are being pursued by Outsiders, Langtry stops the army in their tracks with a single ward spell. Even Dresden is gobsmacked.

I picture Solas as having been on that level, adjusted for Dragon Age. (I'm done nerding out about the Dresden Files for now, back to Saxons in Attila.  )

And now I desperately want Jim Butcher and Patrick Weekes to collaborate on a project. They've always reminded me of each other. 

Oh, gods, the hilarity that would ensue! The amazing scenes! 

...but the feels.

David Gaider left Dragon Age???

 

But he stays with Bioware, right? So then it's not another lead writer jumping ship. That's usually a really bad sign. But new IP sounds gooood. Unless the MMO rumor is true... 

 

I think Dragon Age is in capable hands with Weekes. The rough plot for the remaining game(s) has probably been mapped out for ages. So I don't expect a new direction or any other drastic change. As long as they don't ruin Morrigan or something I'm okay with the whole lead change. New enthusiastic people is usually a good thing. I can totally understand Gaider getting bored after ten years. It's a long time.

I personally am glad to hear of a new IP, and if they assign one of the popular and long-term writers that's a good sign. I want more different BioWare games. 

 

Me too, new IP yay! I love DA and ME but I want to see new worlds of them.

I think the skin textures look amazing in high/ultra setting. There are mods for new ones, but the ones I've seen take away all the little flaws that make the skin look real.
 

aaand his freckles will ruin me.
