No Solas it's been like this for a month or two and I'm getting (and I know I'm not the only one) tired of the Solas bashing in here. The guy isn't perfect I know but it's been constant and as you can see it's ran some old fans off (or they hardly come in here anymore) and I'm fixing to become one of them.
Also I am not the one that reported to the mod I'm just being open about what I think of this thread.
Alright, here's a bowl of elfroot. Let out the feels. And let's sit down.
Solas bashing =/= honest character critique. The analysis that went on for several pages about whether or not he was a liar (he is - just not a very good one and much of it is out of self-preservation and self-interest). That was a good discussion. Not character bashing. It was looking at the facts. A variety of opinions were ushered. None of them wrong. Some people took that discussion poorly and saw it as a character attack. It wasn't. Sometimes the truth or what people perceive about us or each other hurts or is wrong. But that's the way the cookie crumbles. We're not perfect people all the time and Solas certainly isn't either.
Solas bashing =/= literary analysis comparison. The parallels between Miltonian Satan Solas set this thread on fire about two months ago. It was meant to help add to the discussion of the character, archetypes of rebels who turn against their God or Gods, and fail to achieve that they had originally sought out to accomplish. There's a reason comparative literature exists in MANY levels of education, especially amongst higher institutions of learning, and there are even masters and Ph.D. level degrees in this field of study. Comparison, analysis, allusion, metaphor all help people understand things by offering similarities and differences between them. I know Solas is not Nicholas Cage because Nicholas Cage has hair. But, like Nicholas Cage, Solas has a round head and pointy chin. They both have light eyes. But are they one and the same? Clearly no. Are both men capable of inciting internet fury? As we've witnessed these past... two months according your timeline, the answer is unabashedly yes.
Solas bashing =/= satire, comedy, or ribald humor. As I stated earlier today, tragedy and comedy are one and the same given enough time and distance. Distance can be either physical, emotional, or mental. It is being able to look at something in a different way in order to understand, cope, or deal with a fact, situation, or person. Being able to laugh at one's self, their interests, and even whom they date is generally a good natured trait. Likewise, it is similar to the literary analysis issue - being able to see things from multiple perspectives and allowing humor to color the viewpoint. It connects ideas in ways that might not be readily visible. Likewise, comedy, humor, satire, dirty jokes and the like are all ways to get people to laugh. To have fun. To heal. To live and let live. It's a normal, healthy response.
