I think I'm going to start my new play through tonight and I'm not going to romance Solas again. I think it's going to be Cullen for me.

I really like Cullen, I think he's a great character, a great romance and he's come so far since Origins and DA2. I think he's probably my favorite, most fulfilling romance since Alistair. I mean, I did start out as a Cullen lover, until they kicked me out of their thread. But gosh, he's just a really good character. He's such a gentleman too. So romantic.

On topic: Solas would totally be a PC snob.

Alteration and destruction for sure.

edit: I said illusion originally, but naaaah. Terrible liar.

Nice choices.

Mysticism.

He'd also talk about how the games were much better in the old days and judge anyone who played Skyrim without playing every single other TES game.

LOL He would! I was just going to make a comment about how sad I was Mysticism was cut in Skyrim. I didn't fiddle with magic much in Morrowind or Oblivion but Mysticism was my favorite.

I totally see that.

Cullen romance is good. Cullen is simple. Simple is good.

But I won't play DAI again unless there is DLC or I can romance Jack White.

I agree fully with the Colonel: Solas would practice the school of Alteration. Oh yes! ;)

So speaking of Solas, I have been spending time playing with my Samhal Lavellan (seen in <---- avatar with his boo Cass, photobombing), and I am trying to set up Solas as more of a damager for a change. I didn't really notice, but I have been building Solas exactly the same, every-single-playthrough! Not that that is bad, necessarily, but I usually try different builds out, and generally have a good way to roleplay the reasons for such builds. It was just so easy to set him up as a CC/Support type.

Curiously, how do most of you choose to build Solas (for combat)? Do you vary it? Do prefer certain types of spells on him over others? If so, what are they and why?

(Holy Handbasket! I am really trying my damnedest to get out of doing any actual work today.)

For me, I give most of his points to rift mage, then I invest in the spells for barrier improving and lowering aggro, and most importantly, fire spells, mainly fire mine.

Pull of the Abyss plus Fire mine equals crazy damage from Solas or any mage.

For Solas I got full Spirit and Rift Mage and what I have left goes in Ice.  I tend to keep my mages to one element.  Viv gets Ice and Knight Enchanter, Dorian Fire and Necromancy.  Lavellan gets a mix of Fire, Lightning and Rift Mage.

I use those builds for the same reason Alistair is alway sword and shield and Leliana an archer.  It seems to be the intended build and suits their characters.  Plus, Viv is introduced using an ice spell and Dorian mentions fire spells in banter with Cole.

Okay, that is one of my most favorite combos (abyss + fire mine), and that will NEVER leave his arsenal. *thumbsup!* It's just too good, and funny (especially if you have another mage drop static cage over the top of it, and have them drop another mine - it's like a damn pinball machine).

I love playing a werewolves but I have a bad association with them since I used loverslab's werewolves mods. It was my curious mistake.

Did you run around yiffing all the other werewolves?

That is exactly it. There is somewhat of a "built-in" roleplaying reason for this. But, I don't generally have a problem coming up with a reason to sufficiently roleplay other builds for these characters. I keep imagining how he might have taken on fights, when he wasn't as weak (as he claims to be). And now that he has the support of others, perhaps some of these old fighting styles come out. Maybe that is also why the Abyss + Fire mine won't ever leave. I'm imagining a coalescing of his old self and current self. The tough fighter, with the wiser strategist.

Or I'm just pulling crap outta my backside.

I generally get his full rift mage tree first. PotA is just too useful not to get. Once he has all the passives, he's pretty much able to spam spells endlessly with no lack of mana. I give him barrier and dispel + upgrades from the spirit tree (even on nightmare, I have no use for revive/mindblast) and then give him immolate and fire mine from the fire tree. Any left over points goes into winter's grasp/winter stillness and lightning passives.

This is my general set up as well. And it works fantastically.

My intention this time around, is to modify this set up though, and take more pure damage type spells. I will still fill out his Rift Mage tree (no reason not to, anyway - PotA and the mana-regen are reason enough, and with so many points to spend throughout the game....)

A few PT's ago, I found a couple of good "recipes" for armor/weapon builds. I have used a few of them on my last two mages, and it certainly increased my damage output. I am now putting those to use towards Solas' new build.

Has anyone done any analysis on the Old, Ancient, Unreadable, and Untranslatable Elven Writing codex entries that you can read if you drink from the Vir'Abelasan? The latter seems like it might be about Abelas?

Here are the texts:

Spoiler

Spoiler

Spoiler

Spoiler

The first is definitely from Abelas' PoV. He speaks of preparing for "those who cast Mythal down". I'm guessing these are also the people that betrayed her. Pantheon? Forgotten Ones? Who knows.

The second speaks of a shapeshifter that may have taken on dragon form. This codex is interesting to me, since Mythal, Goddess of Justice, allows Elgar'nan to judge him. "Belongs to Dirthamen" may refer to the sinner as a slave of Dirthamen, or as someone who wronged Dirthamen? The last description, with the "form that may be one or many" makes me think of the very last Forbidden One we have yet to see, the Formless One.

The third has me confused as heck. "Pillars of the earth" with soulless workers might refer to the Old God dragons and darkspawn, or Titans and proto-dwarves. Dragons are known as "blood of the earth" though, so I think the Old God dragons the more likely choice. We know the elven gods had some connection to the old gods. What the connection is we can only speculate.

The last is probably the most straight forward. Andruil has what sounds like a nuclear bomb.

My last playthrough I managed to give him his full Rift mage tree, the barrier + dispel in spirit, fire mine AND static cage. It was bananas. Sooo much damage. It was a bit overkill though, since he had so many spells to cycle through that he wasn't casting his rift mage stuff as often.

With my Rift mage Lavellan in the party? It was crazy. Most stuff died before cassandra even got there. Endless weakness/CC/mana regen.

Irrelevant what he looks like.

(And hair is good.)

Edit: On topic: Solas is always fully upgraded on Rift magic for me, because that is the only damage every enemy in DAI is vulnerable to. Also it is great for crowd control. The rest goes to barrier, fade step, a bit of ice, maybe an AoE fire spell.

Edit 2: (No hair is good on Solas. I don't like hair on Solas.)

Its ok no apologies needed :) I'm not saying we can never have a bit if offtopic banter or that we have to be unfun and super serious all the time. Its also just a request from a fellow threaduser not a thread mod admonishment or command etc - I'm def not mod of this thread! I also realize there is limited things to talk about that haven't already been discussed to death :)
