*patpatpat* Yep, totally normal. We're all under the spell of the egg and his goofy, charming, smile.

The problem is that when he smiles or laughs, there's that tiny little spark of hope where I see him as he could be.  He could be happier, more open, more willing to share his wisdom without bitterness.  It's like getting a glimpse of the person he could become if he'd just pull his head out of his own a**.

And that is where much of the feeeeeeeeeeels and tragedy come in. His goofy infatuated face in Fade Haven and his face, especially when he tells you "Come with me, vhenan" and you go to Crestwood.....before his hesitation sets back in. He is happy, light, and there's a hint of potential for some sort of peace for him. And the moment where his eyes shift and he pulls back for the final time....it's gone. Lavellan is made real, she's hope, reminding him that his weariness and regrets need not be the only path....and then he pulls back there anyway.

One of the best things Weekes and the DA team did was to give him so many layers and have him almost never outright lie. And if you romanced him, you'd feel like you got to see the real him (as a player, but from Lavellan's POV...much she doesn't know, his disappearance and the deception unveiled by Leliana after he's gone, she probably questions what was real....but as a player I feel like we got a strong sense of him with enough reading between the lines and filling in the blanks). I just love this character so much.

Apparently people haven't heard of the sort of indie Celtic pseudo rock band Solas? I used to be really into them when I was thirteen. It still pops up as the top results in google images for me haha.

Nerdy fact SOLAS can also stand for... Safety of Life At Sea... A set of internationally recognised maritime regulations directed at doing just that...

Yeah, I'll get my coat...

Wow, the wardrobe teasing had completely slipped my mind. I seem to suffer some blind spots when it comes to characters I have real affection for. Put beloved character A and beloved character B in a room together and my brain is apt to lie to me, or simply break.

Thanks for chiming in; their relationship feels a bit more balanced in my head now. Snark on both sides. Dorian for something rather superficial; Solas for something rather moral. Less frustrated with Solas suddenly. They are so human and lovely and stupid and lovely.

Plus see it from the thousand year snoozer's POV... When I closed my eyes... those vints were like tiny grains of sand as compared to Elvhen... Now they're some jumped up new empire and this guy is criticizing MY DRESS SENSE...

Pah!

I heard someone on the news talking about seeking solace, and they pronounce it differently than Solas.  Is Solas and solace being exact homophones rare, or am I normal and the news person is crazy?

He's so adorable he just unexpectedly stole lots of hearts, even from those of us who had next to no interest in him when he was announced. This tale is a common one.

*raises hand* yup, that was me too. Wasn't even sure if I was going to bother with his romance. That changed after my first play through. His scrunchy angry face, that smile, little laugh and voice. Wasn't expecting his smooth flirting either.

Aside from a glitched save that lasted for all of a few minutes, I never played an elf in DA before. I made one this time since I was tired of humans and elf ladies had the most romance options.  I thought I'd be going for maybe Iron Bull or Sera but holy magnetism and fascinating personality and adorableness, Solas. Biggest disappointment was running out of dialogue with him so fast...always. I could sit and talk to him forever.

I always assume people are crazy, but in this case I'm sure it's just a regional pronunciation thing. Okay, they are crazy.

I love playing as an elf. When it was revealed we could play a elf/dwarf/Qunari I was so happy and ready to play as an elf again. Played dude elf first so no romancing Solas, but he sneaked his way into my heart nevertheless. I resisted the urge to create a lady elf on my 2nd play through, but I didn't get very far into it before that handsome face broke through my defenses and I caved.

Thanks to all of the elf lore in the game and the Dales being accessible, and the bitter irony of a (Insert name for traditional elven religion here) elf leading the Andrastian Inquisition to save the world, I have a hard time playing elves.

Or, I would, if it wasn't for Solas lording his superior model over me at every turn. :(

I just wonder how many people lurking in the thread are laughing at us and our inclination to dissect every last tweet and make it about Solas.

I really don't know, but I am not lurking and I am constantly laughing at that people suck.

Maybe she's allergic to glitter. I also miss Oxidants. This thread could use some good chemistry puns.

Oxidants is always in my heart. ... No, wait. That sounds bad. That sounds rather unhealthy. I guess I'd die soon if oxidants were in my heart.

We should quote her a lot and discuss Dark Souls excessively to bring her back!

On topic: The Cass thread made me think about the ME Reapers and Cerberus again. What do you guys think, how would Solas position himself in that issue? After all, Cerberus follows some ominous plan to shape the future as they consider it to be best, this is not too different from Solas. And how Cerberus is willing to cooperate with "evil forces" (Reapers) to achieve their goal does remind me quite a bit of Solas giving his orb to Corypheus.

>.< the male elf model was painful to see, but I've become good at ignoring it.

Edit: Okay so it was mainly the broken arms thing that bothered. I know people who are that skinny so the tiny frames didn't bother.

I think Solas might be willing to cooperate with the sanitized version of Cerberus that the Illusive Man crafts to bring Shepard in as a tool.

The moment the truth about the genetic experimentation, losing control of the Rachni and Thorian creepers, the violent xenophobia, rampant abuse of biotics and children, and general failure as sapient beings came out, he'd despise them even more than the Wardens. The Wardens were foolishly messing with demons and the Old Gods, and Solas hates them for that. Cerberus getting themselves indoctrinated and becoming one of the Reapers' tools would just be the cherry on top.

I could see Solas siding with Cerberus only if necessary to defeat the greatest evil, like the Reapers or perhaps the Blight itself. But he would be wary, and would be prepared to eliminate them in similar fashion as the agents he talks with Sera about.

Then again, this may be my personal bias against Cerberus speaking.  Coming fresh off from Citadel, I rolled my eyes out of my head when Jacob and EDI were trying to argue that Cerberus did good work. Jacob's time as security director ended with the space station in flames and everyone dead but him and Miranda, and admittedly the project's goal.  And the perfect retort to EDI's, "I'm also a Cerberus project, Jeff. Am I poorly designed?" would be, "No. But like everything else, you broke free and started killing all their dudes and flooding their network with zetabytes of pornography."

I saw Oxie like a few comments a day ago, so I think she's returned. Maybe her Punning class had a strenuous finals?  But I'm up to discussing Dark Souls and puns if need be.

TL;dr for Devajave Dejajeva*  :P: Cerberus takes the Wardens' faults to extremes, Solas disapproves. Caddius is not a Cerberus fanboy or apologist.]

I believe Solas could never side with something like the Reapers, since they mind control people and he's against slavery.

I'd love to hear the illusive man and solas discuss their ideals, though.

But don't you guys see? The reapers are the tainted elven gods! He's just trying to save them! They were starting to enslave everyone. And Solas won't have that. This is not how it was supposed to be. So he hatched this plan to control them, so he could lock them away in dark space. But they escaped their prison. Now it's a race against time to prevent the galaxy from being destroyed. He thinks he might be able to cure them and restore the world to what it was once. In peace with machines...

No wait, a world without the veil would be synthesis. So that would make Solas the catalyst...

Dejajeva ;) Pretty sure anyway.

Also, the comparison works pretty well since the illusive man also chooses not to control you and saves your life. Would be just like Bioware to take an awesome character (like the illusive man) who was perfectly fine, then ruin him because a widdle indoctwination or some other change is apparently an excuse to throw everyone an idiot card. (Anders).

I guess it is, but I don't have to like it, lol. And I don't. Stop ruining your own characters, Bioware.

...

I rolled my eyes out of my head when Jacob ...

Funnily, I am not so sure about all the things you mentioned.

Solas wants to go to extremes to bring back the sort of order he considers needed. He gives his orb to Corypheus, who -- despite surely being a cheery fella -- is a bit suspect and might not be the most trustworthy guy to have around. I am sure Solas was aware of that but he risked many hundreds (?) of people suffering to get what he deemed necessary. That is not too different from genetic experimentation and the Rachni issue.

Locking up the Rachni and controlling them by whatever means necessary could even be compared to him locking away the old gods.

Xenophobia -- well, while I am not sure about this (because I did not yet play a Solas nemesis run and never played a Tal-Vashoth), quite a few people suggest Solas had racist tendencies, so there might be something to that, too.

Abuse is not too far off his radar, too -- assuming he actually took something ("power") from Flemythal against or at least disregarding her explicit wishes (though I have my doubts regarding her unwillingness). And he surely used the Inquisition quite a bit. Why did he not tell about Skyhold earlier, why wait until Haven is burned to ashes? Surely because it was just not convenient to mention it earlier.

I don't say he's evil, because I really do not think so. But I do think he is willing to do a lot to further his goals because he believes that this is the only sensible way to improve the situation; "the necessary evil". This is very much like the illusive man, isn't it? That guy did not aspire to become the next evil overlord. He wanted to improve a situation he considered unbearable and he thought that he would need to make sacrifices to achieve it; and that he would be able to prevent bad damage once it came to that. Just when I remember how helpless and broken he is when meeting him at the end in the Citadel... Solas does seem like that. Morality is very much a matter of interpretation, and Solas' interpretation does seem to depend on if he or somebody else makes a decision or applies a strategy.

(Besides, I rolled my eyes at basically everything Jacob Taylor said or did...)
