Funnily, I am not so sure about all the things you mentioned.
<Cool stuff>
(Besides, I rolled my eyes at basically everything Jacob Taylor said or did...)
I can see the Illusive Man and Solas getting along to a degree. Or at least respecting each other. But not the whole of Cerberus. (Strangely, the Illusive Man did actually seem pro-human but not anti-alien. But he seemed fine with ultra-racists like Kai Leng.)
There's a whole lot of groups that are willing to do what they believe is the only sensible way to fix an unbearable situation in Dragon Age. They spend most of their time fighting each other.
The Mages and Templars are the most famous example. Loghain's coup and the resistance of the Bannorn another. Celene, Gaspard, and Briala.
So while Solas and TIM are similar in being able to do whatever it takes to achieve their ends, I think Solas disagrees with the idea of going after the biggest, most twisted power source available and trying to claim it without full understanding of what that entails. He greatly approves of helping people and situations in general, regardless of race. TIM is dismissive of Shepard's moral quandaries while trying to remain polite about it. (Project Overlord comes to mind.) The Orb being given to Corypheus is still largely an unknown, so that could be a huge point in this comparison's favor, I don't know yet. ![]()
I can definitely see post-Whatever-Happened-To-Arlathan Solas being as broken-down, pitiable, and still kind of magnificent as the Illusive Man's dying hour. A last minute argument with Elgar'nan and Ghilan'nain atop one of the crystal towers of Arlathan? ![]()
Solas did use the Inquisition for similar purposes as the Illusive Man. Both wanted to attain powerful and highly advanced technology, (Orb of Destruction/The Collector base data) and both deceive to get what they want. TIM's was very shrewd manipulation as seen in the Cerberus base in ME3, while Solas's consisted of a lot of little lies and omissions. I'd like to think that Solas's plans won't go as sideways as TIM's did.
I'm of the opinion that Flemeth willingly gave up her powers for Solas, and her godhood to Morrigan. But I don't think Solas would hesitate to kill her if necessary. He'd angst about it for literally thousands of years, as he did with Whatever-Happened-To-Arlathan (WHTA
) but he'd do it.
The scene where the Illusive Man refuses anesthetic for the procedure also reminds me of the kind of self-flagellation that Solas seems to put himself through, rejecting Cole's attempts to help him.
I also sighed and rolled my eyes at everything Jacob Taylor did.
My opinion of his intelligence basically withered when he thought the way to earn Shepard's trust was to say, "We're with Cerberus-"
*sound of multiple gunshots*
Tl;dr: Quite a few similarities between the Illusive Man and Solas, but I'd still put money that they'd really be at odds with one another. TIM would probably regard Solas as the egghead revolutionary to Paragon Shepard's guns and friends approach to saving the galaxy.

See? It all makes perfect sense.
(I have yet to play that DLC. I didn't buy any of the DLC back then because I boycotted Microsoft Points. Currently replaying with most of the DLC.)
Worthy cause, those were bullshit. But mass effect dlc was well worth it.

He seems impressively in control of himself in In Hushed Whispers.
Perhaps the red lyrium doesn't affect the gods as quickly, which is how Andruil was able to make multiple trips into the Void?

My issue is not so much if they would get along. Sometimes when two people are too similar they do not get along. After all, they will be offended by the same things (and people tend to apply just the strategy in a fight that hurts themselves the most), which makes it hard to compromise. Anyway, let's ignore this. My question was about the approaches. And I see many parallels there. I have, however, no doubt that Solas would despise the Illusive Man and the other way round.
As for using the biggest power, I really am not sure. Because I do not yet know what is "the biggest power" in Thedas. The Forgotten Ones? The Old Gods? Solas would use both.
I like the parallels you draw to the relationship to Cole. I had not thought of this but it makes perfect sense.
And about Taylor... intelligent and smart are two different things.

You basically swayed me to your way of thinking.
Again. My semi-bi-weekly venting of contempt for the non-TIM parts of Cerberus just had to come out first.
Going off the antagonists in the games and the theorized downfall of the Creators, I'd put money on the Blight itself as being the single biggest threat in Thedas.
Besides the obvious near apocalypse that sets Theodosian progress back and permanently ruins large swathes of land, it potentially corrupted Andruil and the rest of the pantheon, possibly took down the Titans, possibly took down the Forgotten Ones, and ruined the color scheme of the Primeval Thaig. (Much of this is, admittedly, fan-theory.)
In Origins, the Blight kicks off the series of events that leads to Loghain becoming regent and the Fereldan Civil War. So a Blight sets off political disasters, and the two combined make for the main conflict.
Awakening has the Architect and the Mother in a civil war over the Blight, the Song, and the darkspawn's fate.
Dragon Age II has one of the few people who could help stabilize Kirkwall driven mad by blighted lyrium, thus sending Thedas into the Mage-Templar War.
Legacy had Corypheus, Darkspawn, and Grey Wardens as antagonists, all products of the Blight.
Mark of the Assassin had Orlesians, who are arguably the purest form of the Blight.
Dragon Age Inquisition has one of the guys who originally brought the Blight back to Thedas in a burlesque dancer Tevinter Magister package as the main antagonistic force.
Either Blight, or whatever day the Executors are standing vigil for. ![]()

Give in to the elven glory that is Siha.
The Blight? Hmm... While I agree on the Blight being a catalyst for a lot of action, both good and evil, I think it is in itself only a tool. The Blight is controlled, isn't it? At least by the Song, and the Song is emitted by something. So this something, if anything, is the one almighty power. Or at least that is my working theory.
In the end, even the Architect only follows the song. Just that something in his being allows him to hear something else. Maybe the song is just white noise (or gray noise or whatever) to the Darkspawn but to him it is more, he actually seems to hear a melody that enables him to think further than others.
(Kudos on the Orlesian pun. My heart goes out to you.)
The Executors, however, damn right! Nobody has noticed them before, nobody knows what they actually are -- they are the incarnate of any conspiracy theorist's wet dream.

You know the old expression, it's not over till' the fat lady sings?
The final level of the final DA game. Opera-battle of the gods in the Black City, complete with a quartershop quartet of protagonists, Ander choirs, Avvar folk solos, Dalish heavy metal, and Tevinter show-tunes.

I can take a lot of offense but this goes too fa..... oh, I get it.
Considering modern storytelling I would not be surprised if at the end of that show somebody who we have never seen before steps on stage and is revealed to be the big bad. While we never learn anything more about the old gods, the Blight, or the Song at all because nobody ever mentions them again.

I think it's that ideas come in cycles. Uniqua proposes one theory, it's discussed, two hundred pages later, Carol complains there's nothing to discuss, and Susan brings up the original theory. Uniqua is surprised to see that Susan has some interesting new add-ons to the idea that make perfect sense, and that sparks a new thought in Geraldo, who starts the cycle up again.
We've just run out of the overbearing incredibly super-important discussion stuff, like the barebone basics of the Solas romance's ending, or the epilogue. ![]()

My most recent head canon on that is that it is mainly true... However, it is due to the fact that he was the butt of so many jokes and so much abusive behaviour on the part of the junior members of the pantheon (Andy, Fal and Dirty), that he was relieved and happy and hysterical with joy at having at last shut them away...
PS I need to write that fic one day...
