On topic...on topic...I think Solas would greatly approve of this thread! When he wasn't busy being scandalised by it... ;)

Solas thread, you're just so amazing. So many awesome, heartwarming confessions and shared experiences.

It's really incredible to hear how much these games and the romance options have touched people in real ways. It definitely puts into perspective how off base some people are when they scoff at those that consider the romance feature an important part of the game for them. It's always been something a strongly value, because there are so few places that I can see a hero like me in media. My reasons are straight forward, but hearing other ways they've impacted people has been both touching and educational, in a way. It's just so incredible what a video game can do for people in such a simple way. I guess it's just a reminder that growth and understanding can come from places you wouldn't expect.

It's really awesome to hear these accounts and know Bioware is helping people see things differently. I honestly kind of hope this is one of the times some devs will stumble into this thread and see this conversation, because I'm sure it would mean something to them that their work is really touching some people at this level. It's actually an amazing thing.

It also does seem like something Solas would relate to.  :P

That will be happening, Nocte. I didn't even think about it, but you're absolutely right... I bet it would mean a lot to the devs, especially the writers and likely the cindesigners, too (I'm thinking of poor John Epler breaking his back to make The Iron Bull the pansexual Patrick Weekes wanted him to be).

So, I dropped Allan a line about it and he's going to pass the positivity along. :)

I PMed a link to David Gaider, too, thinking that was logical to hit the writing team lead. Gave a direct link to the last page, where your post made me comment and then the snowball of positive messages started rolling. :)

Wow I really love this thread and everyone here *hugs* <3 You guys are going to make me cry...

Anyway on the topic of Solas... if I do end up with the opportunity to romance him, it'll be difficult to resist doing that every playthrough. I'll probably have to go out of my way to avoid constantly talking to him during certain playthroughs. Good thing I planned three inquisitors just for him.

SOLAS:

Spoiler

I think he would be a little scandalized, if he realized the Inquisitor was checking him out.  :P Wide-eyes and stunned silence.

SOLAS: Did... Were you looking at my... at my rear?

INQUISITOR: Your "rear?" [SNICKERS] The answer is, yes, I was looking at your rear. [PAUSES] [FROWNS] Is... Are you okay with that?

SOLAS: [WIDE-EYED] [BLINKS] I... don't know? I've... never had this happen before.

INQUISITOR: [SLY GRIN] Well, maybe I should do it a little more? See if it bothers you or not. For science.

SOLAS: [VIVID BLUSHING] Well, perhaps for science...

INQUISITOR: [INTERNAL FISTPUMP]

While I do want to try Cassandra and Josephine's romances, I might roll a lady Inquisitor first for Solas if he is an LI.

I also really want to try Dorian's romance. I don't usually roll that way but there's something about him.

They really should, for so many people it was the first space we felt safe to be ourselves. My bestie is finally getting in on this in DA:I he can't help himself, he's so inlove with Dorian's mustache! XD (He's so cute when he goes on and on about it.)

For that matter, this will be the first time I'll be Truly romancing a female character ingame! (Seriously can't wait to meet Josephine. She is so going to be my second playthrough. *praying over here she doesn't have the secret crazy*)

But all my "me" playthroughs and many of the others have always been bi and it wasn't something that just...lived in my head. I could flirt, even if I didn't pursue Lelliana or Isabella or Merill. It was SO AMAZING just to be able to do that...I just realised, I'm going to freak out when I romance Jo...

Oh PLEASE no secret crazy!!

You guys are seriously the best.

And your comments and confessions are why I will be forever angry at anyone who disparages BW's inclusiveness, and their inclusion of romances. I don't think people understand how a fictional romance, in which a player can control so many of the variables, can be a really positive thing. I used to run a confessions blog, and I would get so many confessions about how playing certain romances changed the player for the better- by helping them understand women, or how same sex attraction is natural, or their own sexuality. What else in a game can do that? Does combat give you that kind of breakthrough? Does gear progression have that sort of effect, where people come out of achieving their iconic look and suddenly they're more open minded? No. And that's why BW games are special, because of the content they include and how players are allowed (and encouraged) to interact with it. I will criticize some of the details, but I will always defend their existence and how important they are to the players that love them.

I'm romancing Cass first, but my second playthrough is up in the air. I know I'll be a Qunari but I can't choose between Josephine, Dorian and (CONFIRM IT OR PUT ME OUT OF MY MISERY. PRETTY PLEASE BIOWARE) Solas. Also I have to take possible race-gating into account so...

I've never had any problems with any sexuality, I've always been pretty open minded, but DAO was the first thing that ever had me appreciate romance content that wasn't particularly aimed at my own orientation. And, in fact, I enjoyed playing a gay male more than I did playing a straight female. My canon Warden to this day has been based on that original playthrough (through about 6 playthroughs  )

But the one that really affected me was Leliana. I don't know what it was exactly about it, but her romance arc was one of a few things that helped me come to terms with the fact that, actually, I do sometimes feel attraction to females, and that whilst I may not be ready share that, I don't have to be scared of those feelings, they're there, they are what they are, and that's okay. And that really has given me some peace.

So anyway...  :? Dat Solas... totally On Topic  :?

This is very well put. I imagine it was interesting seeing all those confessions. All of this wouldn't be possible if the amazing writers at Bioware didn't create a world and characters with such depth and emotion that we could use as a safe platform to explore ourselves from. So, definitely extending the thread's warm, fuzzy feelings to them for all the hard work they do and their commitment to inclusion. I hope they can look at the posts here, and the confession blogs, and all the other fan sites and know that, despite the complaints they get and even the occasional ruffled feathers they might get from even posters here expressing positive feelings now, in the end they're actually making a difference for the better. What they do is actually making things better in its own way and that's a great thing.  <3

Just caught up on the thread, and these stories are amazing. I'm a straight woman, grew up in a small, extremely close-minded town where I had a lot of extremely close minded friends. And while I always supported equality and tolerance and such, I cringe when I look back on the insensitive things I said, and the cruel jokes I laughed at as a teenager. Fortunately I moved on to live in bigger cities filled with real people and that forced me to re-think my views on sexuality, gender, etc.

But it really wasnt until I played DAO and started reading the forums (only recently joined and actually started posting - but lurked on and off for a couple years), that I realized just how very important inclusion was - some of it born out of sympathy because here i was, new to games and loving them, only to find that very few allowed my play as myself - female. I'll admit, I've never romanced a female character (seems the ones I would - Morrigan, Miranda - were always straight). But just the fact that I became open to, and intrigued by the idea, also allowed me to be more open to LGBT romance in film, fiction, etc. and realize, a love story is a love story - be it beautiful, dysfunctional, whatever, regardless of the orientation of those involved.

And, on a more personal note, Bioware's portrayal of bisexual characters, while still problematic, reinforced my distaste for biphobia - and helped me take pride in the fact that I'm comfortable dating bisexual and trans men - instead of feeling like the odd one out with a dirty secret among my more close-minded straight friends.

So many feels.

tumblr_lvnarjirlb1qalg37o1_400.gif

Wish I could harness the power of my happy tears into likes for everyone.

I plan on doing a few of the different romances (Iron Bull and Cass are the first that come to mind) to experience all the warm-and-fuzzies but Solas is the sole ass that I have my eye on.

No? I'll just walk myself out, then.

I'm going to go with delicious. But I'm a slightly twisted person....

Oh! Which reminds me, before I got all distracted by the recent awesome that overcame our thread (*tearfully* damn you guuyyys), regarding Seth Green on Joker - and mind, you, I'm speaking as someone who has much love for the guy (I'm going to go ahead and age myself in admitting I has a huge crush on him in high school. When he was on Buffy. Yeah...). But! I could totally see him being all "oh, you want to romance Joker? Yeah, have fun with that. It's gonna be great. *evil cackle*" I mean, have any of you SEEN Robot Chicken?

I'm really not inclined to compare that whole scenario with what's going on with Gareth David Lloyd. I'm more inclined to compare it with the Greg Ellis situation, where, yeah, he misunderstood what was meant by 'companionship,' but, in my opinion, understood the romance part just fine - hence the "YES." Which is why I'll cling to my optimism, for the time being. And as far as being a sad panda should this all turn out badly - well, I was going to be one anyway. This really wouldn't make it all that much worse.
