I have no problems with Solas lying. My problems are when people don't consider what he did lying to begin with. I mean honestly, if my boyfriend didn't tell me he was an axe murderer and his argument was that I didn't ask him specifically if he was an axe murderer....

I believe this is what they call . . . ah, yes, case in point. :D Succinct, direct, irrefutable. Also, good luck with your cleanse this weekend, Ave. Thinking of being healthy and such, I've just started drinking green tea. Any of you tea aficionados have any recommendations for a tea newbie? Flavors, preparation, etc?

To throw into this argument:

Solas is a liar. An interesting sort of liar, because there's only a couple times where he straight up lies to your face. Other times he tells the truth, just not the specific truth and you don't get the option to question him about it. When he does have to boldface lie, that's when he disapproves.

However, I find it hard to get high and mighty "he shouldn't have done that, that's BAD" about it, considering what he's lying about. As far as we know, he has very, very good reasons to not be open about the truth. As much as some people insist that their Inquisitors would be fine with the truth, Solas has no reason to think that's true, especially regarding a Lavellan Inquisitor and the Fen'Harel thing. I think people think about this too much in the terms of their Inquisitor and their feelings and that influences them.

Solas coming out and admitting he's the Dread Wolf would do him absolutely no good, not to mention it probably would distract the Inquisition from focusing on Corypheus, which is dangerous. It also would probably put a monkey wrench in whatever Solas is planning, which Solas clearly thinks is important and crucial and right. So from his perspective, he's protecting himself and the very thing he's fighting for. You know , the thing he's willing to throw away everything for and even face his greatest fear coming true. All of that comes before being truthful to Lavellan, even when he really, really wants to be. And it's ultimately why he breaks it off.

I'm out of likes again (not your fault this time, blame Colonel), so take a heart instead. <3

It's difficult to remember that as far as our Lavellan's knows, Solas left her because of something she did (Cole's banter), and left the Inquisition because Corypheus is dead and the Orb's gone. She may speculate all she wants, but she has less knowledge than we (the players) do. Poor girl. ;_;

Sera keeps telling me that chocolate chip is better than oatmeal raisin AND SHE'S WRONG. We all know that oatmeal raisin is the best.

I'm an egalitarian cookie aficionado. Namely, I line up all of the brands, in pairs so they don't feel lonely, and then eat them all.

I have conferred with he, Lord of Cookies, and he tells me that all cookies are made good and mortal and eventually they all "go in belly" the same.

BUT HE GAVE UP THE COOKIE.

He became the Veggie Monster and BETRAYED US ALL.

He was a good spirit once, before they corrupted him from his purpose.

Ahhh. I see. An equal-cookie-rights consumer. I bet you eat your tagalongs and thin mints in the same mouthful. SHAME. SHAAAAME.

How did you know?

I will not be shamed for my culinary habits, dammit! *shakes fist* I'll call your manager, I swear to Stevhen!

All of that comes before being truthful to Lavellan, even when he really, really wants to be. And it's ultimately why he breaks it off.

And I think maybe why people get more up in arms about Blackwall's lie is that there's less at stake and it's 1000x less of a dramatic, dangerous secret that he's hiding. However, I think people are way too harsh on Blackwall in general. Blackwall isn't my favorite character and, in my opinion, one of the more ill-fitting DAI companions but I have some sympathy for him. And speaking of comparing Solas and Blackwall, I think even Solas sees something of himself in Blackwall. Thus the lashing out and the later apology.

Yeah. Blackwall hurts people but that's long before he joins the Inquisition and he's obviously trying to atone for that. There's no reason for Solas to be as angry as he is with him, especially when the rest of the Inquisition more or less forgives him (or can). I'd agree there's probably some projection going on (and maybe even a bit of injured pride. Solas probably doesn't like that someone like BW was able to deceive him).

I'm somewhat similar. I just take a while to tell people things because it seems unnatural to tell things about me unless it's relevant. Otherwise it seems awkward or whiny maybe.

Some days I feel like I becoming more and more Ron Swanson. Not even going to fight it.

Well, the thoughts occur to me as I'm writing, y'know?

Oswin, I have the same problem.  It's actually genetic. When my father was in middle school, they moved to a new city in California. Everyone, and I mean even the dogs, HATED it there. But they didn't mention how much they hated it, because that would be too forward of them. My grandmother turned down multiple job opportunities, thinking that the kids loved school there. It was only ten years later they were talking about it, when one of my aunts cracked finally, saying, "Y'know, that was the single worst period of my life. That was a terrible town. Do you know how hard it is to hear the math homework over the meth deals going on?" and then everyone was venting a decade's worth of hatred for that city at once.

  That's quite impressive. My family are vocal moaners so we always know what each other hates. But there is so much about my parents that I'm still learning. My dad in particular is quite the closed book (and most likely who I take it from) and it was only last month I learned his RAF regiment was the Parachute one. Man has fallen from the sky several times and I didn't know.

I'm not young, and we talk to each other every day. This is just how bad we are at talking about ourselves

Like The Colonel said, it just feels a bit unnatural for me to start talking endlessly about myself without someone asking me to in the first place. No one ever does xD

I guess this is why I feel bad for Solas after learning from Weekes about how he was going to tell Lavellan everything and then just panicked and changed his mind. For once I can actually empathise (I don't normally do empathy. Kudos Weekes) because I would so be the same. I'd build up to it, convince myself I would go through with it and then chicken out at the crunch.

Of course, unlike Solas I carry my giant HUMOUR SHIELD OF DEFLECTION. So I'd have just cracked some bad jokes and lol'd my way out instead of waving my magic jazz hands around.

When I was fourteen, I was cleaning up my room and I found this massive, nicked board underneath my bed. I pulled it all out, (which was a struggle because it was nearly as wide as my room.) only to find an elaborate oil painting of a British army struggling in the Zulu wars, complete with accurate regiment insignias and tactics taken from the British accounts of the battle.

At first, I was delighted to be living in such an old house with so many forgotten pieces of history, before I remembered that this was a modern house that we had constructed.

My dad walked by on hearing my bewildered shouting, and said, "Oh, yeah. I painted that. We didn't have video games when I was your age, sadly," and walked out to play some Madden

And while my mother was complaining about my paranoia about bears and the Great Outdoors, my dad cheerfully recounted the time that a bear chased him and his friends down a mountain when he was out camping at age seven, and how his dad just sighed and said he'd wished the bear hadn't been so fat and slow.

Don't get me started on the first time he started talking about all the pranks he's pulled over the years and I realized that my dad wasn't the dead-serious-buzzkill Dad, he was actually just really, really sarcastic.

On a much greater scale of this, Solas.

"Wow, some ancient elven artist made this wonderful fresco."

"...Actually, that was me."

"  Eh, he probably just studied the classics or something.  ^_^ "

How can Blackwall not be a good person? He has smurfs living in his beard-portal. And Smurfette is his unrequited love interest. She grooms his beard(s) in the middle of the night when he's asleep. No one but Cole knows her heartbreak.

Smurfs are good judges of character.

Are they responsible for polishing Solas' head too or is that some other small magical creature?

Only gorilla man understands me. He is the perfect, flawless black knight love interest I've always wanted.

And somewhere, in the land of misty satin dreams, the sound of a breaking heart can be heard through the quiet rain.

"Do not take it so hard, shiny, it is not your fault.", the dwarf says to the tall silhouette next to him.

"It is not? How do I know, what did I do wrong? Why is she leaving me like this?", Abelas turns to look at Varric, his eyes filled with a deep and ancient sadness.

"The heart wants what the heart wants. I am sure she never meant to hurt you."

They stand and stare for a while, until the sun sets and leaves them in utter darkness, only the sound of of the wind breaking the ice-cold silence.

But you see that's not lying... It's simply not making a full frank and upfront disclosure...

By this definition "Don't ask, don't tell" would be lying... It isn't.

No. There is a portal in Blackwall's beard that leads to their smurf village.  Solas is bald. Thus no portal.
