I know.
Don't you roll your eyes at me young lady.
I know.
We know he was questioned but not the specific questions. And Leliana said he was evasive but again we don't know what he answered exactly. Other than that village he said he was from which turned out to be an ancient ruin. But who knows maybe thousands of years ago there was an elven settlement right there and that's where Solas was actually from.
And the upshoot of this is... Insofar as we know... He did not lie in this instance.
Maker, my enemies are abundant. Many are those who rise up against me.But my faith sustains me; I shall not fear the legion,Should they set themselves against me.-Trials 1:1
When I was fourteen, I was cleaning up my room and I found this massive, nicked board underneath my bed. I pulled it all out, (which was a struggle because it was nearly as wide as my room.) only to find an elaborate oil painting of a British army struggling in the Zulu wars, complete with accurate regiment insignias and tactics taken from the British accounts of the battle.
At first, I was delighted to be living in such an old house with so many forgotten pieces of history, before I remembered that this was a modern house that we had constructed.
My dad walked by on hearing my bewildered shouting, and said, "Oh, yeah. I painted that. We didn't have video games when I was your age, sadly," and walked out to play some Madden.
And while my mother was complaining about my paranoia about bears and the Great Outdoors, my dad cheerfully recounted the time that a bear chased him and his friends down a mountain when he was out camping at age seven, and how his dad just sighed and said he'd wished the bear hadn't been so fat and slow.
Don't get me started on the first time he started talking about all the pranks he's pulled over the years and I realized that my dad wasn't the dead-serious-buzzkill Dad, he was actually just really, really sarcastic.
On a much greater scale of this, Solas.
"Wow, some ancient elven artist made this wonderful fresco."
"...Actually, that was me."
"

Eh, he probably just studied the classics or something.
"
I've never found art lying around the house
That would be awesome.
The only thing I've found under any of the beds here are my Dad's old bagpipes. Which, upon discovering he had inherited, I kindly asked that he not passed down to me
my sister can inherit them. I hate the blasted things.
I was being sarcastic when I brought up the whole 'you never asked him if he was Fen'Harel' thing btw... I realise it's dived into a more serious discussion now. Aha, whoops.
But I'll drop my sarcasm to say this; to me a lie involves actually saying something. A lie is used to disguise a truth, be it image/text/speech, whatever. A lie is something that exists. If you have never told the truth but also never covered it up with a falsehood, then I'd say you are withholding the truth rather than lying. Although some would argue that's the same thing. It's still dishonest, that I won't argue. But it's something that is more frequently used out of kindness than lying is.
So when Solas is giving it his whole 'Because The Faaaaaade' BS. That's a lie. He is making stuff up to cover up his 'I was there' truth.
But in regards to being The Dread Wolf? You could say that introducing himself as Solas would be him lying about being Fen'Harel, but then he could have also have really been a dude called Solas. To me he is withholding the truth about who he is rather than lying about it like his Fade nonsense. But that's just me.
Now I'm imaging that intro scene with him being honest. How incredibly odd that would have been to have him smile and go 'If introductions are to be had, I am Fen'Harel.' - Madness.

Sorry to disappoint... But I left, young behind a few years ago...

I'm reminded of the potential hilarity in KotOR after the Leviathan mission goes down.

Basically walked in, surrendered weapons, told them he had studied magic on his own and that he specialized in the Fade, and that if they wanted a chance to save the world from the Breach, they should let him take a look at the prisoner.
The badassery and confidence of which is part of the reason why I have several Lavellans.
He also has banter with Cassandra.
http://dragonage.wik.../Solas/Dialogue
SpoilerThose are some of the dialogues where Solas comes very close to outright lies, and definitely lets them trip themselves up with their own pre-conceptions. (Anyone else reminded of Mouse's parting words?
)
In particular, I enjoy the Iron Bull dialogues, especially since Dorian is openly admiring of Solas's skill with magic and Vivienne is grudgingly respectful.
Clunk, indeed.
I can see why people argue that he never outright lies. But I see Solas, outfit and everything, as being designed to pass under cursory inspection, and let them fill in the rest of the blanks themselves.
It's easy for him to come across as an apostate hobo because he is, technically speaking, an apostate. But he's so much more than that. Claiming his background as 'apostate elf', which is true, but not expanding on it, leads to the sort of misunderstanding that he's aiming for as camouflage.
Yes, and the marvel is he comes so close yet in none of the instances you quote does he lie...
Please don't get me wrong... I am not saying he is not deceiving or not misdirecting or not misrepresenting.... Because he does plenty of that...
It's just there are very, very few instances where he actually, outright lies.
The trickster god is truly tricky...

In that case I just have a slightly larger definition of lie than you, and we're in agreement over everything but semantics. ![]()
Bold lie/lie: Creating a story and sticking to it.
Lie of omission/misdirecting and misrepresenting: Letting everyone else do the work for him.
Solas is brilliant and lazy when it comes to lying. ![]()

It's probably something bigger than her, yes, but I just don't like the "excuse" that in order to protect someone, you have to treat them like they're not able to think by themselves or something like that. But she's not a thousand + years old demi god either, is she? She may be resourceful and talented but she can't presume to be in the same league on any issue...
I mean it's like a toddler saying "I'll help you mum..." Well yes, darling just go back to your tea...
I agree on the freckles...
*sigh*
I don't think you're quite grasping my attempt to joke out of this argument.
Or maybe my ability to joke is diminished by my severe dislike for Kissiebear and her bagel bites.
But I was telling the truth!
Oh I see...
I was really enjoying myself. And, yeah, to answer your question, if I had kids I would teach them just that... Because you know, what the most able deceitful people use to trip you up is not their lies... but yourself your own prejudices and preconceptions... And Solas is masterful at that.
That Sebastian gif is the greatest.
Let me ask you a serious question .
Would you teach this to your children?
Also, you guys can **** right off with your cookie conversation. Some of us are hungry.
One can be dishonest without actually lying. For instance, if I said I can fly, and I'm a pilot, I'm not lying, I can. Just with the help of a machine. Nothing I said was false. I just left out relevant information, but that's still dishonest.
What you all should be asking yourselves in relation to Solas is does it matter if he was outright lying or just being dishonest, since in either case it's a negative thing from our point of view because we're the ones left in the dark.

Y'all too worried about whether the egg is lying or not. What you should be worried about is if he is any good in bed. If he butters your toast, fries your bacon, smothers you in gravy and bakes your biscuit.

An ashkaari walked among the bakers, and saw one who made smaller goods than the rest, and always had wasted butter and dough after doing her work for the day. He lingered as the other bakers filed out into the streets of Qunandar, and watched in astonishment as the last baker began to work with the imprecise amount of dough and butter, adding sugar and ingredients foreign to his eyes, and kneading it into small balls. "What are you doing?" he asked. "You are given sufficient ingredients for the daily loaves of bread, but you have left two loves unfinished. The Qun does not waste, but now a family will sleep with bellies less full."
"The loaves fill the stomach, but these baked things soothe the soul," she said. "I was given one by the Arishok in passing when I was taken with distress, and it eased my pain. I bake these for the wounded Antaam from Seheron, and all those of the Qun beset by doubt."
The ashkaari nodded thoughtfully, and the two waited for what seemed like hours, breathing in the growing smell of sweet-bread. At last, the baker pulled out the tray. The little balls of wasted dough had become crisp and crumbly discs.
The ashkaari tasted the invention at the baker's insistence, and smiled as flavor burst in his mouth. "Could you make one with raisins for all ashkaari?" He asked hopefully.
The baker frowned. "What part about 'joy' do you not understand?" She huffed, and pelted him in the eye with a chocolate chip.
I am too scared to chat with you guys LOL
Oh and for everyone: I am currently doing some SolasXAbelas smut fanart
I made one too! I'm still waiting for the fanfic to be fully editted so I can be allowed to release it though. It's a abelas x solas x lavellan fanfic.

I get what you're saying thoughand I'm probably focusing too much on real life experiences, when there's nothing ordinary in Solas' motivations.
Well even if it were about protection in some form, I don't think that it necessarily has anything to do with him thinking her unable to think for herself. But he realized that she's a weakness to him, has known for a while that she throws him off, but weaknesses can also be exploited. Not that he doesn't have weaknesses on his own --he certainly does, but he has also shown a tendency to make improper judgment calls about people, only to later apologize or reflect on things he might not have thought of before. See banter with Blackwall and even Sera.
Because his original intention was to go out there and confess everything to her and the decision to pull back and end it without telling her was made quickly, among his intentions then might be some element of wanting to protect both his plans and her (though it seems that he was counting on the orb to survive and thinking....presumptions again.....that he'd have a chance to let her see/hear/witness/learn some bit of the truth after Corypheus was dead). I think fear in one form or another got to him and he decided to let her go and focus on his goals as he saw them. Things, as before, did not go as he expected.

This moment....it kills me, the change in his face. The mask goes back on.
