Ya know, all of this talk about personal head canons, which direction a character's sexual orientation swings (if it swings at all, or a lot), the way in which a romance develops, the content of said romance, or even the content of the character's story... it all just boils down to how we, as readers, as gamers, as artists, as PEOPLE bring that information into ourselves, and interpret it.
It's all very personal, and to take your very PERSONAL opinion, may it be that opinion is an "educated" one, it should never give you rights to shove that thinking into someone else's head space, and tell them their take on things is wrong, and don't even get me started on taking that opposition to degrading or demoralizing depths. We all gather, ruminate, and come to varying conclusions, based on like a million different factors that are often times completely based off personal experiences.
If you want to imagine Solas being ace, then go for it. Is he that way in game? Clearly he favors the female elves, just in the same way that Blackwall has a big bushy beard that may or may not house a colony of smurfs, we can see it plainly, because that's the hard information being given to us. But to tell someone their fantasies, their crazy-train dumpster theories, or what gets them hot for a character is invalid or wrong (and then resort to insults) is simply not okay. You've made their headcanons YOUR personal issue, and that speaks more about the bully and their laundry list of unresolved personal matters, than the person with the desire to see Cullen be bi, or have an illicit long-term love affair with Sampson...
It reminds of when the writers were getting hounded for the IB/Dorian romance being an abusive relationship, and how they weren't sensitive to their fans who had been victims of abuse (or currently are), and that the whole relationship triggered them emotionally... The writers write about real human things, the dirty underbelly of society that affects us the most emotionally, because they want you to CARE about the characters they create, and about the world they are in. The same is true for any other artist out there writing fan fiction or making art, they have this burning inspiration inside of them to make something, to take a story like Dragon Age, and it's various characters and expand on the enjoyment of their gaming experience, and then share it freely with others. Interpretation is just one part of the creative process, and that means taking what is considered vanilla, and altering to challenge the way we see people and the complicated thing we call "relationships". It makes us think "what if?" and in a small way, it translates into our real lives.
I don't believe in looking at things so black and white. So long as things don't cross into the land of morally-devastating and harmful/EVIL-evil, then I enjoy seeing perspectives that differ from my own. It makes me go "WHY do I not think Solas could be asexual? Is it just because I don't like it? Or is it because I don't think the writers indended him that way? In that case, what harm is it for an AU fic?" Really, in my opinion, none, unless I make it a me-issue.
And HOLY CRAP, I did it again.
/end scene.
