can anyone clarify why people would hate fiona? she hasn't done anything as bad as bianca ... unless they think allying with tevinter was horrible 

I think hatred for Fiona stems from the books(?) where she carried over the vote for the Circles to break away from the Chantry and thus, pulled innocent mages into the war with the Templars who didn't want to be involved and wanted to go back into the status quo.

 

I think that's the jist of it...just going by what my friend says when he rants about Fiona (this is a popular discussion for us)

 

I was very "Meh" over Bianca.  On one hand, yay Laura Bailey!  On the other, the character herself was just...flat.  I much preferred Varric's tale of Bianca to remain a mystery, it was much more open ended like that, to reveal her took away a lot of what I imagined.

Seriously tho, they're just unforgiving of her mistakes. I was too. From our perspective, it is hard to swallow. Only real reason I stopped being so hard on her is because I didn't think the reaction she got from the chucklehead elf haters was warranted at all. And it rarely is.

 

Not that all people who dislike her hate elves. On these boards though, a lot of them do. Same ones that invade every other elf related thread.

She is a Mary Sue, apparently. I liked her in the books, but in the game her character does a 180.

 

A lot of the people that dislike elves, are also very fond of the Templars, so she makes a perfect target.

Nooo, DORIAN DEAREST. *bodily protects* That video is so painful to watch. The Solas punch is brutal, too. But I have to say, the way Solas kind of brings his hand against his face after whipping his head back towards the Inquisitor makes me snicker a little bit. It's so dramatic.

Leliana's the perfect example of one IMO. Fiona... if it weren't for this game, maaaybe. But I don't think so. A true mary sue would be our inquisitors and the Warden, but they're at least player characters. Kinda expected from Bioware. Leliana, well it's why they call her the writer's pet.

i read "the calling" and "asunder", but i liked fiona. i probably missed something from another book.

Ooooh yea. And they try justifying the city elf oppression too. I wasn't the biggest elf fan before. Still not really, I like the lore, not so much the Dalish, though I hope they stop getting kicked around already.

 

But I started sticking up for them more when I saw that the fans here really were crazy, not only defending elven oppression but were big fans of Orlais and their douchebag raping and murdering Chevalier. I mean, I'm glad they exist in the lore, but I wouldn't condone or defend their practices or actions...

well thats unnerving, i hope the writers dont read the forums and think all fans think that way. 

i've personally have always connected with the elven (dalish) lore. it's interesting to me how now we find out the truth of it all. 

 

I will submit my not-an-elf-fan-ness, for another perspective, in any setting. I don't 'hate' elves, because what? It's more like being tired of them or various tropes, I guess. I liked the angle they went in Origins but other than playing the start to see how it went, still didn't care to play one. There's a lot of easy reasons, but a lot of them are just setting or even genre-based, and so are unfair to hold against a specific game - like someone not being a fan of fantasy, but holding magic against an RPG If you are not a fan of a huge section of a game's world, it's weird to think they would take it out.

 

My canon warden was a male dwarf noble, sword and shield, no romance. Didn't really get more interested in elves until Inquisition (*eyes Solas*), whose alt-canon Lavellan has taken over my canon line of games, heh. In writing up my character's inquisition story-style I've dug into so much elven stuff it's hilarious for people that know me. "Yeah, yeah."

 

In general though, there's always people who don't like one thing that other people do, and devs usually are aware of different camps... Just like the whole 51% of completed playthroughs don't complete a romance stat.

Essentially. I cared but I wasn't super invested. My Warden is a queen Cousland. I launched Inquisition and decided screw it, I'm tired of playing humans with noble names, let's be an elf.
