When I first read some vitriol against the elves, on here and in other forums, I was just flabbergasted. It's the same for Mages. Or Cole.

All I can think is..."You hate these people for what they were born as and the situation they found themselves in? How?!"

I just can't wrap my head around it. Sure, hate certain individuals of a group for the actions they have committed, but to think a whole people deserve to despised, hunted, caged and mistrusted or abused just for what they are, not who they are, is so totally abhorrent to me that my mind just recoils from it. I mean, I know it's a game and fictional. Even then, I just can't compute it. I always just class them as "troll" for my own sanity and move on.

I also truly appreciate the conversations between Solas and Cassandra more after the end revelations.

  • Cassandra: It is interesting to hear a mage's perspective of our abilities, Solas.
  • Solas: I am pleased you find it so.
  • Cassandra: I am taught my abilities come from the Maker. You probably think it silly.
  • Solas: Your abilities declare the world real. Who, if not the Maker of this world, could grant such a gift?
  • Cassandra: You believe in the Maker?
  • Solas: I am always open to new ideas.

and

  • Cassandra: Solas, if you do not mind me asking, what do you believe in?
  • Solas: Cause and effect. Wisdom as its own reward, and the inherent right of all free willed people to exist.
  • Cassandra: That is not what I meant.
  • Solas: I know. I believe the elven gods existed, as did the old gods of Tevinter. But I do not think any of them were gods, unless you expand the definition of the word to the point of absurdity. I appreciate the idea of your Maker, a god that does not need to prove his power. I wish more such gods felt the same.
  • Cassandra: You have seen much sadness in your journeys, Solas. Following the Maker might offer some hope.
  • Solas: I have people, Seeker. The greatest triumphs and tragedies this world has known can all be traced to people.

Those were already some of my favorite in-game banters before I knew more of what the hell was going on, and the immense respect Solas has for Cassandra and even Cassandra's even headed growth toward Solas too, were an unexpected side effect of keeping both in my party nearly all the time (they were my favorites, along with Dorian, separately).

Even Fen'Harel is open-minded. Hmm.

Cass/Solas - the friendship that Thedas deserves.  I will ****** bawl my eyes out if they do the "revelation" right.   Then if they reconcile, I'll be crying even more - more overwhelmed by that than by Lavellan/Solas reconcilation I am almost sure:

Solas: My heart, are you...ok?

Lavellan: *weeping hysterically* it's just so beautiful. you guys. FRIENDSHIP. FALONS!!! *continues to weep*

Cass: Ugh.

The fact that the Dalish themselves fully admit that they know very little about their past, are trying to recover it piece by piece (usually by examining old ruins), and fully admit that what little they know is based on stories and legends ("It is said that Fen'Harel locked the Creators away") didn't give you a hint that their beliefs aren't the Gospel Truth BEFORE the revelations in DAI?

I certainly didn't think that their beliefs should be read as gospel, especially since almost all religious tales are largely metaphorical in nature. But I enjoyed seeing that issue actually dealt with in a game. I enjoyed the journey of learning about Thedas over the course of the first two games, becoming comfortable with the tales and the folklore, and then having them dismantled.

Edit: I also feel like I need to point out that I don't think the Dalish are foolish for having been "wrong". I just think it's fascinating. I'm a nerd for real world mythology, and I've found it really interesting to watch these games construct and then deconstruct their mythologies in a real-world way, if that makes sense.

Shares the same pov as Galdauran

Yep, I also drew that parallel, though DLC spoilers should be under spoiler tags since many people won't be getting it until May.

It can't get much more ridiculous than it is now.

Oho, I wouldn't say that. I think you'll find the internet always saves a level or two of looney just for moments like this, when you think it's gone as far as it possibly can.

Next thing you know, you're reading posts of people hoping they can commit atrocities to city elves and you're forced to do it as the character, and suddenly ISIS doesn't seem like such a phenomenon anymore. (they really aren't, sadly).

That's where we are now and I thought that much was just over-exaggeration. There'll be more.

I had a similar reaction.

When I first played DAI, I went Dalish and planned to romance Sera or Solas. I'd heard that both of them weren't that into elves (Sera being "not your typical elf" and Solas wanting to prove "he's not just another elf"), but I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, and resolved to go with the first one I fell for and/or the one who seemed to dislike elves less. My Lavellan fell fast and hard for Solas, but I resolved not to deepen the romance until I met Sera. The moment she looked at my Lavellan, dropped her friendly disposition and frowned, "Aaaand you're an elf. Great. Well, you're not too elfy, are you?" My eyes bugged out and I thought, "WOW... Okay, Solas wins. By a landslide."

If you took Sera's introduction out of Dragon Age and applied it in real it would be so unbelievably offensive.

Sera always makes it clear (in both romance and friendship) that she can't see past the elfy part.  While Solas may not like the Dalish much he does respect Lavellan as a person, and respects her choices towards the elven gods and how she feels about her culture.

Also, Solas reassuring Cassandra's doubts after finding out what she does about the source of her powers. Cole does too, but I find the immense respect for Cassandra that Solas has to be one of the best things.

I also don't even think that Solas really dislikes the Dalish. I think he's just incredibly frustrated.

Sera has a lot of internalised self-hatred going on that, while frustrating to the player, is really incredibly sad.

Yes, 'frustrated' is a much better word.  To Lavellan and the Inquisition it does probably seem like he dislikes them as they don't have the information we get.

I really wish there was a chance to actually argue with Sera about elves (and Viv about Circles).  Both of them are fantastic characters but the player is given no choice to actually make a decent case against them.  (Viv in particular.  Madam 'The Circles Were Wonderful' de Fer.  Yes, I bet the circles looked good when you were in one of the two palaces you could live in.)

I'm pretty sure if this were real life, she'd have been committed to a mental hospital so quick your head would spin into zero sum.

I think this is why my Lavellan and Sera didn't get along at all.  I imagine it's the same for the majority of Dalish Inquisitors who RP'd themselves like traditional elves.

Agreed on both accounts. Solas has basically been banging his head on a wall, and how long can one do that? He's extremely weary and frustrated.

Sera is more complex and yes, sad in some ways, than many people give her credit for, refusing to look past her brashness. She even pulls me in two directions, but I came closer to the 'kind of love' category, once I understood more about her.

My whole thing with Solas is that you have to put yourself in his shoes. He wakes up and his entire world is gone.   There is noone really to connect him back to that time.  It's gone. Totally and completely. Just because he is an elf doesn't mean he has much in common with the elves of this time or they with him. It's sort of insensitive to say 'oh you guys look the same therefore you must have a lot in common'.   he's probably a total shitlord to the dalish, but he's sort of just sadly and desperately trying to connect with them on ANY level.  he's totally and utterly apart from this time.  I give him a pass because sad-reasons.

so yeah. i don't think he dislikes them, just frustrated and really lonely.

I liked Solas almost immediately, but I had to think about Sera for a while before deciding I liked her as a character. She's a wonderful foil to my Lavellan, who has always been very comfortable in her own skin.

I think at first I was torn between Solas and Cullen. I first romanced Solas, but thought the Fade kiss was the only romance scene I would get (don't ask me why) so I replayed and went with Cullen. I played through Cullens romance, but Solas continued to be in the back of my mind from listening to his banter. I think I loved the rhythm of his soft voice. Sooo finally I played the game completely, but romanced Solas. So glad I did. Cullen is dull in comparison.

edit: top!

That's basically my thoughts on the matter. It can't be easy to sacrifice everything trying to protect your people only to wake up later and discover that, not only did it totally not work, but they all really hate you. Additionally, rebellion is his very nature, he wants to see the the elves trying and pushing back but instead he's already missed all of that and now they're just… stagnating. I mean, I'm sure if I had my entire culture stolen from me and was forced to live as a second-class citizen in my own land I'd deal with it pretty poorly too, so no disrespect to the Dalish here.

But it's got to be hard for Solas to see that. And to know that it's his fault.

Same, it took me quite a while to warm up to her and figure out 'her' in her actions and motivations. Her reaction to the missing vallaslin actually hurt but I like to think my Lavellan still values her outside perspective.

I didn't really feel anything like that, but I did think it was cool on a replay when my Inquisitor said "no god helped me in Haven," then after the singing the scene cuts to Fen'Harel encouraging her to embrace her role and leading her to Skyhold.

Its irony isn't it? I recall an episode of The Sopranos where Tony begins by complaining to Dr Amalfi, "How come I never catch a break?" A few scenes on you discover he actually caught several... He just never realised it...

Sera's mistrust of elves and all things "elfy" doesn't really bother me. She tries to help the people who need help the most and that makes up for most of her ignorance. I just look at her as a cute, lesbian, Bart Simpson. :)

It's funny, if you have both Sera and Solas in your party they tend to approve of many of the same things.

It's a set of memes/gifs that feature an inquisitor with each romance option and their 'description'.  Love is kind...patient....etc.  I can find the Mass Effect Version, but I know that the Dragon Age Inquisition version was posted on this forum back in the 1000's or 2,000;s.
