On Kaidan, I just started playing Mass Effect for the first time last week. I actually really like Kaidan and wanted to romance him on the spot, but I've heard of other great companions and now feel torn between four romances. Him, Liara, Garrus and Thane--the last one because you guys have said that those who romanced Thane tend to also go for Solas. Since I adore Solas, I want to see what Thane's appeal is. Unfortunately, I don't like Mass Effect enough to play four 3-game-long playthroughs, so someone had to get on the chopping block.

 

(It also doesn't help that after one conversation I realized Kaidan reminds me too much of my sister's previously broken up ex-boyfriend. He looks just like him, and has a similar easygoing personality, and it's revealed he also suffered migraines and has a traumatic past. Unfortunately, my sister's ex-beau also has mental health issues and a traumatic past, and in reality people don't tend to stay that easygoing under the surface after suffering such circumstances. As much as I like Kaidan, between the competition and the reminder of a real life acquaintance, he has to go.)

As for LI, I'd go for either Liara or Garrus.  Thane gets screwed over by the devs very badly.

The weird thing about Kaidan is that my canon Shep cheated on him with Garrus (she was lonely...) but then got back together with him. And he took the Garrus affair pretty well. I was surprised. Now I'm playing a Liara romance with a new femShep and he won't stop hitting on her! In ME3, that is. He was there when the two lovers reunited on Mars!!! WTF, Kaidan?! It's one thing to have a crush on somebody, but you don't bring it up knowing the other person is in a relationship. With the other sex, no less! And besides, galactic war and everything...?

I'm discovering new sides of him, and I don't like them.

 

I felt like taking a shower for five hours after every conversation femShep had with Jacob. People raged about the ending. I think it was a far worse crime to make Jennifer Hale talk like that with Jacob. I'm only half-joking. Just no.

Yeah, poor Thane, he could have been so much more. For me, I'm a Garrus girl all the way (though don't look at my profile badges cause I would play it on my brother's stolen account). He gets more screen time and if that raptor was a real-life guy, I';d be over him like Solas on the Fade.

I just bought the Mass Effect Trilogy on Amazon ($25 for all 3!), which requires Origin to install. The games are registered to my account even though I'm not halfway done with the first one. 

 

Yeah, I heard something about that. After ME3 came out, the forums exploded with unhappy customers decrying... mostly the ending, but also the fates of their LIs. I saw a lot of "Thanes deserves better" slogans, but I also saw that of a few others LIs, so I have no idea about the circumstances surrounding it. Since the ending seems to suck no matter what and many LIs get screwed over anyway, I've braced myself for whatever may come.

 

ME2 is the best of the three, and it has Lair of the Shadow Broker which the best DLC I have played from Bioware.  It's what I'm hoping for with Wolf Hunt actually.

 

EDIT: And if you want to read the ME EU then stay away from the final book.  It's just terrible.

I had the exact same problem with Shepard and Jacob.  My Shpeard:

1) A lesbian

2) Faithful to Liara

3) Had the sole surivour background.

 

She was not going to be flirting with someone from Cerberus!

That was mine too. sole Survivor and Earthborn so.....she had a lonely life and wasn't about to be flirting with a man, and one who also worked for Cerberus. I RPed her journey as one of redemption, so even though she was tipped with Renegade bonuses, this was like....getting everything together and learning to maybe actually trust (and love) again.

 

Wasn't tempted by Garrus. He's too much of a best friend and Liara captured my attention from the beginning.

Uggg...Jacob..he repulses me!  Don't flirt with him!!  He'll cheat on you!! After my first play through, my Shepards never talk to him..and I always kill him at the end of ME2 so I don't have to see him in ME3.

Jacob bored me so much it took everything I had just to get him to be friends with me so I could do his quest.  He was terribly dull.  I didn't find out until this year - on this thread actually - that he just cheats on you. I don't know why, but I find it amusing. He's finally interesting but only in the way that total douchebags are.

How so? Not more than any of the other new LIs from ME2, I'd say. I'm very glad he didn't get a Disney happy ending. His story ended appropriately.

I feel like people are always giving high praise to Gareth David-Lloyd, and it's truly deserved, but honestly if I could kiss every damn person involved in animating Solas on the forehead, I would, and not only once. It's also a huge part of who he is, his physical/facial expressions, and all those subtle changes of expression that gives away his inner thoughts and desires. Damn, they did a stellar job on Solas, really. Pretty sure he wouldn't have touched us so much if they hadn't.

Yeah.  Solas is actually pretty economical in his speech and betrays a lot of his emotions through facial expressions.  GDL did a GREAT job selling Solas' care for the Inquisitor in that final scene.  But the cinematics department. Holy ****.  So much was said in those facial expressions between the Quizzy and him.  You just see how wrecked he is, I believed it.

True, I think they came form similar approaches. Mine battled herself a lot and then after what happens in ME2 and beyond, has those doubts on top of others. She also had a lonely life, one where people left or died or betrayed and she had to rely upon herself a lot. Also partly why she's Infiltrator class....lone wolf, sort of. But all of the events of the games bring her back into a place where she has to try and learn to rely on others again and by ME3, when a lot of your journey is that same lesson.....

I've been saying this all along myself. The new engine, the animators, the motion capture people, the cutscene team, everyone involved in Solas. His expressions are often SO subtle and effective and realistic that it all works  to deliver us the pain.

I think the players impression of his character really evolves over the course of the game, his first little scene has him seeming very… dorky? Kinda like 'hey I'm the smart guy and I'm very excited about it'. idk. But the same can be said for all of the characters, they all develop in such a way as to challenge our initial impressions of them. Most of them.

The team used two actors, I think, for all or most of the motion capture stuff. They were actually in a relationship together and there was some sort of hat for Qunari mocap.

 

I talked to Sarah Hayward at PAX East about a month ago about some of this stuff. Very briefly, but she told of the care they took in the motion capture as well as and especially with what an impact they knew that final scene with Solas would have. There are nine branches to that and they all had to be planned and animated and then she even mentioned the one where your Lavellan is the one to walk away and leave him looking all super sad.

Earthborn/Sole Survivor background? That makes three of us. I've also resolved to romance Liara for my "canon" 3-game-run. 

 

Four   Though I just picked it because it was the default, and I knew very little about Mass Effect going into ME1.  Then I started thinking about the type of person that background would actually produce.  The RP definitely got more interesting after that.

So here's where I admit that Jacob actually grew on me over a replay of ME2 with ManShep.  First, I didn't have to dodge all the awkward flirts, and could actually talk to him like a human being   Second, it was nice having someone sane and normal around to balance out all the crazy aboard my ship, and he wasn't that bad about Cerberus either once you did a little digging.  But I wound up killing him on the suicide mission to spare him the character assassination in ME3.  Same with Thane.  I figured they were better served going out in a blaze of glory.
