Thank you! I hadn't planned on bringing Cole, because my Lavellan is also a DW rogue, but now I'm definitely going to take him. Must maximize the feels!

I have Cole, on advice, respeced as an assassin archer now and this way I can at least kind of take him along with my DW rogue but I think I might miss Dorian's sheer power in that part if it's the tough battle I'm expecting.

I'm horrible at explaining things. lol Sorry.

Like... If you've noticed, certain companions seem to comment more on quests and world things. For me it's almost always Cassandra, especially at the beginning in the Hinterlands since she's the first highlighted when the companion screen pops up so I just lazily pick her first. After three playthroughs I decided to switch up on purpose just to check. And it does make a difference. Not with companion dialogue but all other talky bits.

Now she's quiet and Solas is commenting on everything.

I had no idea that was the case.  My surprise was over this being a thing, rather than what you said.

Solas is generally the last picked for me due to being the last of my regular lineup I select.

I wonder if this really does make a difference. In the DLC it's mostly been Cassandra and Dorian talking and they are picked in order, for the most part, with Solas last. Cassandra, I noticed, usually speaks up first on things, but I didn't know if that was just intentional.

I know Weekes mentioned K.D. Lang's Hallelujah, but her version does nothing for me.

I've listened too much of Jeff Buckley's cover of Hallelujah to fully appreciate any other version of this song anymore, they all sound bland to me in comparison to his version of this song, completely gut/heart-wrenching.

I have the same case with Damien Rice's cover, although Jeff Buckley is pretty good too. I think DR only sung it live once, because I haven't been able to find a studio version. It's still amazing though.

It's actually a thing in Mass Effect as well. Especially 2. Garrus is my bae and I always got frustrated cuz the ones I mostly disliked always talked more. It all depends on the order. I've reloaded saves and tested it several times. It just never occurred to me to try it in DA.

I personally love Rufus Wainwright's version of Hallelujah the best.

Edit: I also love Bon Jovi's version..but that man could sing the phonebook and I'd melt.

For me it's especially noticeable at the beginning. According to the keep I've made 25 characters. xD I'll get so far in and quit because of cheeks that bug me or telling myself to stop and spend time outside for craps sake. So I'm used to Cassandra talking about everything. I love her voice but I love Solas more and it got aggravating quick.

Whether placement holds true once other characters come in, I don't know. I'm just now done with the Hinterlands on this file so I'll have to keep experimenting.

Like coming out of the Redcliffe chantry, Solas says a comment about Felix and Alexius' protege (Dorian). All those playthroughs and that's my first time hearing it and he's ALWAYS in my party. But always last, too.

Damien Rice's version is pretty emotional as well, damn (Still prefer Buckley's but this is a definitive second).

Spoiler

But well, expected nothing less from him, his live version of Rootless Tree @ Abbey Road leaves me speechless every time I listen to it.

You got some strong opinions there:

Jacob - that was a level of bad that is hilariously baffling to me.  I'll give you that.

Thane - ???? I romanced him.  I preferred his romance to Garrus' because it was a little less bro-y.  I loved the Garrus-mance, but he and my Shep. were bffs and that's what felt right.  Back to Thane, he was going to die. Period. To relegate his story to hand-wavey codex "im getting a lung transplant in the middle of a galactic war" would be a bit sad and silly.  I thought his death was incredibly moving.   I'm glad he got to go out the way he did. It was worthy of him, instead of dying in a hospital bed.

As much as I want a happy ending with Solas, a bittersweet death for him is not entirely out of the realm of possibility. It's actually very and highly likely...unlike some of the other companions.  What he does deserve is a story that does him justice.  And I do think Thanes - albeit a bit thin - did achieve that.   Killing a character doesn't necessarily mean the writers hate them or they are "ruining" the arc. Most of the time it's natural story progression.

I'm out of likes. It's gonna be a rough day. Everyone who's posted bits of Solas dialogue: I like your posts!

I had a dragon age dream once, the Elven gods sentenced me to die by sending to out to sea in a rubber dinghy, the tide kept pushing me back in though, so they gave up.

This has to be the most hilariously lacklustre execution-by-Elvhen-Pantheon ever. lol'd so hard.

*twirls into the thread*

New Solas painting, based on his tarot card...I missed painting him, haven't done so in a while.

Spoiler

Lovely work!

I feel like people are always giving high praise to Gareth David-Lloyd, and it's truly deserved, but honestly if I could kiss every damn person involved in animating Solas on the forehead, I would, and not only once. It's also a huge part of who he is, his physical/facial expressions, and all those subtle changes of expression that gives away his inner thoughts and desires. Damn, they did a stellar job on Solas, really. Pretty sure he wouldn't have touched us so much if they hadn't.

I don't know their names, so I'll just call them Solas 3D Animation Team.

So here, Solas 3D Animation Team, I love you all, you rock & deserve to be praised too, you shiny crazy-talented diamonds!

Yes, absolutely! Massive kudos to every single artist involved in the process of bringing Solas to life. I hope it didn't seem like I was minimizing the other facets of what makes Solas' character so appealing; only I think I've already gushed about the excellent work Solas' animator(s) did. ;)

I'd like to hug the fabulously talented modeller(s), in particular. Dat bone structure.

I'm with you on not really feeling the K.D. Lang version. But ugh, Jeff Buckley. <3 Though I love his version of Hallelujah, my favourite has to be Rufus Wainwright's.

Oh, I NEED to hear that one. Love Damien Rice!

I'm actually glad Damien Rice came up, because I remembered that "Accidental babies" was the first song I consciously used for hellspiralling. Now I'm thinking it suits Solavellan too:

I imagine a scenario where Lavellan moved on and is in a relationship with someone else. Solas is still in hiding and has no other chance but to witness the new blossoming relationship from afar and weep, knowing he can't do anything about it.

Spoiler

I realize this might sound a little creepy without the music, so have this too:

I liked Thane's arc with friendship Shepard, and thought it was lacking with romanced Shepard, but that's a whole different can of worms.  Generally I just don't like it when it feels like the character develops in a fundamentally different way due to romance, and Thane and Jack definitely suffered that in ME2.  Then they tried to reconcile the two arcs into one with ME3.  It worked for Jack, and not for Thane. </small rant>

If we're talking about Hallelujah, I have to plug for my favorite YouTuber, and his relatively NOT depressing cover:

Thank you  <3 ! It means a lot to me, 'cause I've really just started writing fanfictions (this one is my 3rd), and I'm still a little insecure about my writing in English ^-^

That's the famous song that Weekes listened to?  Well, a different cover but still...

I thought I recognised it!  A shame that whenever I heard it I instantly think of the Shrek movie, since that was the first place I heard it XD

Sorry, ruining the moment, I'll just be over here...

I heard this on the radio today, and I think it sums up perfectly how my Lavellan feels toward Solas.

She's committed, but then I'm a sucker for the-odds-are-against-them romances.

That said, I'm totally prepared for a character death with Solas, as well. I can understand how that would be fitting of his character arc. Although, I'd rather it go the other way.

Ima let you finish but Jeff Buckley's cover is the best cover of that song ever.

It's science.

Also Beirut, who uses a playing card and is awesome and Justin Timberlake (what?! it's ACTUALLY good, don't be a philistine.)

Haven't heard that before, but I'm with you. It definitely fits.

The thing is, he wanted to confess it all to her and so he believed she could handle it somehow, so I want her to know the truth even more because I don't want that whole moment lost forever to his fear. Solas, you need to know you can tell my Lavellan just about anything. :/

There was no galactic war, that started at the start of ME3, as far as we can tell he did sweet FA about seeking out treatments such as the lung transplant that was mentioned in his dossier, and the new revolutionary cure all lung inhaler (Eupulmos device) that was an early post on the CDN.  http://www.cerberusd...eupulmos-device

This is a universe where they cured  DEAD.  I don't think a romanced Thane seeking out some kind of life extending treatment would have been hand wavy.  What did require major handwaving was getting past the complete loss of the character development we had witnessed in ME2,  maybe for those who enjoyed tragedy this was easy to over look, but for those who don't enjoy tragedy it was not.  For the record iirc, if it had been Patrick Weekes decision, Thane would not have had to have died in ME3, this was something he posted at the time, can't find the source.

I'm hopeful that death is not on the cards "...I am the one who will live on."

Yes. Though, I do wonder if his decision not to tell her isn't so much because he was afraid she wouldn't be accepting of him or his plans but more because he's afraid she will be and he just doesn't want her involved in all of it. He'd rather she be safe.
