That would be an awesome character twist! I like it! Yes, that now has to be a thing if Solas dies.

Yes. Though, I do wonder if his decision not to tell her isn't so much because he was afraid she wouldn't be accepting of him or his plans but more because he's afraid she will be and he just doesn't want her involved in all of it. He'd rather she be safe.

I think, personally, it's probably a little of both. He clearly feels he must do whatever he plans to do alone and through Cole talks about not wishing his fate on those he cared about, but also his greatest fear is given as "dying alone", so that's a whole lot of layers of emotional wreckage.

I feel kinda lame for just noticing that party order pretty much determines world/situation dialogue. I usually put mages at the back of the conga line to keep them from being in the heat of battle I run head long into.

This playthrough I decided to have Solas second in line and now his comments take priority. So many things I haven't heard before.

It was like that in DA2 as well. I always made Fenris in that slot.

Definitely a lot of layers. I mean, if his greatest fear is dying alone and he breaks off with Lavellan and Cole, probably to the two people who care about him most in this world... Like, damn. What the hell are you up to, Solas?

DAM DUDE.  I love you Phosphene, DON'T HURT ME.

So I was not involved in the fandom AT ALL - so I take this to mean that the Thane-mance was somehow viewed as lesser byt the devs.  Without this context, I thought it was fine for what it was. thin but whatever. Frankly, I didn't think any of them were that great in ME. I had more emo-pull from my friendships in those games. I stand by what I said, though, it was moving and I'm at peace with it.  Plus my Shepard died anyway so whatever. But it appears I didn't put too much thought into it...

I think I am more taken aback by - how many years later - people are still so upset by this game.  I DON'T UNDERSTAND.  I really don't. I'm not judging - it may sound like it - it's more that I am so confused.  It wasn't that awful.

He's angling for a punch in the face and an arrow to the knee from my Lavellan, if he keeps this up

As sad of a character as Solas is (and I do feel for him), at a certain point I get the impression that he's hell-bent on making himself miserable.  Out of some misguided sense of guilt or atonement or whatever.  And that's the element of his personality that makes me want to Shepard-punch him off a skyscraper.

So, if we're sharing sad longing songs...

How about this one?  https://youtu.be/mqRKkS37wQ4

Oh, gracious love, you were so kind to me
You only broke my heart
Let my arms and legs stay strong
So I could swim upon the open sea
Searching for another love
Floating along aimlessly

Oh, where are you love?
Tell me where are you love
I will wait for you another night
Cause I know you won't leave me behind
Oh, where are you love?

...

Edit:  Title and band would be good, no?  Crooked Fingers, "You Must Build a Fire"

I can't even think about the fact that he's afraid of dying alone anymore. It sets off the hellspiralling like nothing else.

I also feel a little bit like maybe he decided not to tell Lavellan who he was because living apart from her in a world where she still loves him is ultimately more bearable than having her turn away from him when she finds out the truth.

One of the things that also gets me though is all the confusion she's left with at the end. He refused to tell her anything when he broke things off, he then later disappears, leaving a painting unfinished and making it seem like he was likely planning to return before the circumstances changed, the thing with talking through Cole, then Leliana bringing the truth about the town being a ruin and him completely disappeared and I had mine choose the "He never even said goodbye" sad reply. Leliana vows to keep looking but my Lavellan knows she feels guilty over not uncovering the deception earlier and is mostly doing this for her sake, knowing nothing will turn up if he doesn't want to be found.

I think mine would be able to handle the truth after all of her character development and the things she has seen (and having met Mythal in a form). I think she'd have a period of being a bit hurt, a little mindblown, and a little angry that he didn't trust her until very very late but I think she would ultimately be able to accept and love him.

Just I hope whatever loose ends and confusion they do choose to clear up in DLC make this feel at least somewhat better.

Ima let you finish but Jeff Buckley's cover is the best cover of that song ever.

It's science.

Also Beirut, who uses a playing card and is awesome and Justin Timberlake (what?! it's ACTUALLY good, don't be a philistine.)

Spoiler

Hahah. I dig your pop culture d-bag reference.

And aaah, Beirut! That's a great cover. Also, ukelele and a playing card. Could Zach Сondon get any cooler.

Yes, all you nerdy animation, programming specialists... Here's a KISS from the Solas thread!!!

Job done.

I would like to revise this to be entirely inclusive: All you awesome 3D/2D artists, designers, writers, directors and programmers, please take all of our love. ;D

Y u breakin' my heart, doll? u_u And I think you're exactly right. I find if I think about the implications of Solas' worst fear as it relates to his life in depth for any length of time, I start to feel a bit sick to my stomach. Oh, Solas. Why can't you just be happy, you glorious fool.

WHYYYYYY?

Now I have this image in my head of him watching her from a distance as she carries on with her life and all the while longing for something he can never have...WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO ME?!

Spoiler

I do agree though, it seems Solas is a lot harder on himself that he should be, like he's not content unless he feels like he's punishing himself for his mistakes.  Then when he does feel happy, he feels guilty (and in his own terms "selfish")  :(

I have an off topic question about the anchor (It's somewhat on topic because it's for a fic). So the Inquisitor can use it to travel into the Fade. Why can the Inquisitor not use the same Rift opening potential to leave the Fade?

Also for lyrium, do mages really touch the lyrium to enter the Fade? Or do they actually drink it and touching the lyrium was a hallucination?

Sorry I'm struggling for a theme for a fan fiction.

I think they actually could.  I read another fic that theorized this. I just think noone - including Solas(or if he does he's hiding it) - totally understands how it works.   There's an awful lot to the anchor that the game hasn't explored - they probably will in DLC - but I think that's the biggest one - can it be effectively used as a portal.

If you're asking if you could use that in a fic. I think you totally could, I think it would fit with game logic with some explaination about your Inquisitor studying the mark more intently now they have time etc.

I'm not a Thane romancer but I felt so angry at the devs over his romance.  The fact that, in game terms, he doesn't count as an LI is just an insult to all his fans.  As much as I loved the prayer that Shepard read after he died, I wish that had been romance exclusive and you guys had something in the game to call your own.

So I was washing dishes and thinking about my "Solas theories." I guess you guys are spoiler taging DLC stuff. I don't have the DLC/haven't YouTubed it, so I think I'm safe.

New theory: Solas is not an ancient elf. He is an elf from the time of Shartan at the most. He's just playing host to a spirit (a new host taken after Shartan died or Shartan himself).

I was thinking about this because of Solas' end game tarot cards. One has a small Solas and a huge wolf...the other a large Solas and a small wolf. Perhaps this indicates which half of the joined entity (the spirit or the elf) is dominant. I know there are other ways to interpret the cards, but I think it works.

Remember when Solas thanks Cole for reminding him that he is not a spirit? Why would any unjoined person need this reminder? At first I thought, "Solas you fade nerd...you just wanna be cool like your friends." Now, I'm thinking he was having trouble reconciling with his two parts. Solas the fade nerd would rather be a spirit things are easier for him there. It explains Solas' internal conflict concerning Lavellan as well. He's literally of two minds. He can't have an arguement with the spirit within him, but perhaps their wills are somewhat in conflict nevertheless.

If Solas is a joined entity (like Anders or Flemeth) and not an 8000 year old elf mage/god I think this gives us hope for a positive conclusion. The question is who loves Lavellan? The elf, the spirit, or the new entity? Which might be left in the end? The tarot card might indicate a romanced Solas would be willing to try to "unjoin" himself from the spirit, if possible. I just hope he doesn't try to trick us into collecting bomb ingredients like Anders! Hmmm...I'll probably change my mind about this next week.

Yes, from the way she does it, while falling, it was like she opened the rift as a shock reflex, one she didn't intend and could probably not replicate again in a safe environment without a ton of practice. That's how I saw it anyway.

Well for me it was the literally hundreds of hours I had spent since ME1 creating Sheperds with different backgrounds, specs and a couple of LIs (Kaidan and mainly Thane), looking forward to an awesome conclusion, thinking that the franchise was the best thing ever, playing it incessantly to get away from some tough times in my RL, only to find it literally impossible to find a plausible route through the game with any of my Shepards, jeez after forcing the death of her LI the game didn't even allow her to voice her sadness, and her 'bro' Garrus even went on about not loosing anyone right after he'd died! next thing you know she's god Kaidan and Traynor hitting on her - not cool!   Then when I was finally not as pissed off anymore and tried to play my Kaidan romance,  I also realized that I found the gameplay boring.   However,  I don't dwell on it anymore, but when it's brought up, and I think about it, it still pisses me off,  I don't see that changing tbh.

I'm interested to see just what Solas is going to do if the Inquisitor drank from the Well and/or romanced him. I suspect the Solas DLC if you drank the well will have him mind-control you into not stopping him.

This is a theory we tend to come back to every so often around here.

Personally, I'm Team Lone Wolf.  Solas was the Dread Wolf in Arlathan, and he's the Dread Wolf now.  No possession, no body swapping.  Just one very powerful elven mage.

I think this is possible, but I personally hope not because it's been done before with Wynne and Anders.
