I tended to be more forgiving of Anders when it came to Merrill... okay, and in general. [shifty eyes] But I think he did at least care about her, you know? In uh... in his own special, Anders way. I mean, he definitely went about it ALL wrong, for sure. But listening to when he'd go after her... he seemed to be at least be genuinely worried about what would happen to her, unlike Fenris who was just... a jerk. To me, it always sounded like Anders was trying to scare her so she'd back off from what he saw as self-destructive behaviors. Doesn't make it okay, but I at least think his intentions were good. Unlike Fenris.  <_<

Of course that's just my opinion and I really don't want to get into an Anders-related argument. Just my observations. If you disagree that's cool. Please don't hurt me. ;-;

I don't really want to get into an Anders v. Fenris debate either - I liked both characters, but I do agree with this.  Anders to Merrill, while generally tactless on his part, was more him trying to scare her off the path she was on - a path he had taken himself in a sense by allowing Justice to possess him.  Fenris... well. "Avert your eyes WITCH" pretty much sums it up, haha!  I do like that we might be able to interrupt such banters in Inquisition - whether it's to tell them to cool it/take sides/whatever.  I also really love that we'll be able to have those "judgement" scenes that PC Gamer article talked about (haven't read it myself - I feel like it'll spoil too much as I want some game features left as a surprise - but did read the OP in the thread about it).  Where your companions have the opportunity to question you for a change - why you made the choices you did, they offer their support, etc.

In Origins it always felt like the companions' lives revolved completely around our character to the point where they felt bit flat, in my opinion,, where in DA2 it was cool that everyone had their own lives/agendas/relationships etc., but Hawke almost felt like an outsider who happened to drag them along for her own purposes when convenient.  Hopefully Inquisition will strike a nice balance.  I just hope I can actually play an intelligent character this time. I really don't want every interaction with Solas to be him telling me interesting things while I go "dur hur, I don't get it!"

And I'm really, really sad to hear all these bad video game store experiences. And to be honest, I'm really starting to wonder if these sorts of things are actually happening to me, too, and I'm just being 100% oblivious about it. Because I've never had any trouble from any guys at the store, either those shopping or those working. Literally the only thing I've noticed is the occasional "happy surprised" look that a chick's shopping there for herself, but that sort of thing doesn't offend me at all.

Never been harassed in a store or, luckily, gaming online even while mic'd up and talking and clearly a woman. But I go online and see all these horror stories and get a little confused. I can only conclude at this point that I'm just not noticing if someone is being sexist towards me or I was born under the luckiest star of all stars and walk a charmed path.

I hate hearing you guys feeling so creeped out and harassed. :( It makes me wish I was actually in the stores WITH you guys because if I EVER had that happen to me or saw that happening to another girl, I'd shut it down pretty darn quickly.

Awh you're a sweetheart, I'm glad that not everyone is treated that way though, so there's still hope!  :D

MULTIQUOTE. MULTIQUOTEEEEE!

I'm sorry to hear that. :( It really sucks to just wanting to do something related to a hobby and having fun and then having to feel uncomfortable the whole time! I admire your talent for glaring, though. When I try to glare at people... it never seems to work. Completely ineffectual every time. I think it's because I'm small, hmph. Recently I've been working on developing a cold, unnerving stare, though. I like to try and draw inspiration from Revan, heh. She is my queen.

Haha if I can do it then you can do it too! I'm a teensy girl aswell, in height and width so people tend to either mistake me for being underage or defenseless (don't really find that word fitting but for lack of a better one) and things like that, probably where most of the stares in the shops come from too when it turns out I want to buy a game where I stab people in the face with a sword... But glaring at them and proving them wrong seems to take them aback most of the time so I try to use that to my advantage  :P

I've only been talked to like that once in a store looking for memory for my 360. When the guy turned around, I just dropped the merchandise and ran around the aisle doing all sorts of loop-de-loops so he'd never find me. *sigh* Yeah. I don't handle those situations well.

Aaaannnnndd now I'm listening to clips of GDL talking. *sigh* Good choice, Bioware.

Maybe I should clarify: I don't have a problem with disagreeing or arguing.  I had no problem with any of the banters in DA:O and there were plenty of disagreements and arguing.  I just don't like how far Fenris and Anders went and that there was no way to suggest they back off.  The interactive banters may alleviate some of the problems I had with it.  I would have loved the option to tell Fenris to stop when he called Merrill a monster or to tell Anders to get lost when he tried to tell Hawke to break up with Merrill.

I adore all of the DA2 characters.  I just find some of their interactions grating (especially after multiple play throughs) and doubly so because Hawke couldn't react to the worst of them.

So...I've never played MP anything before (preferring, generally, to cocoon myself and block out humanity while I'm playing things), but if there ends up being a MP component to DA:I, I would love to give it a shot with any of you playing on PS4! I would feel way less weird about diving in that way. Just sayin', for future reference and all. :)

That is so weird that your GameStop isn't physically getting the game in for preorder pick-up. I would riot if mine did that. Like, I'd stand there and stare at them until an exception was made in order for them to get me to leave the store.

And if there's an MP in DA:I, I will totally be there. ME3MP hooked me so hard that after playing it on PS3, I then bought it on PC AND THEN BOUGHT AN XBOX 360 SPECIFICALLY TO PLAY WITH MY FORUM FRIENDS. Yes. I bought an entire gaming system for that (well, and for Titanfall, too).  :?

PS4 will be my primary for DA:I. If there's an MP, the possibility may exist that I acquire it for PC (if the specs don't melt my poor laptop) and maybe XBox 360, too. I refuse to buy an XBox One, though. Buying the 360 was ENOUGH, I can't do another new console again so soon. LOL

But yeah, totally add me on PS4 if MP is there. I'll help anyone and everyone along now that I know what the heck I'm doing in the MP world.

I'd like the option of telling party members to calm down/back off if they go too far (I consider Fenris calling Merrill a monster going too far).  The option to intervene and protect a companion who may already be suffering like Merrill was after her Act III quest.  Provided anyone in DA:I is even cruel enough to go that far.  Hopefully not but hey, interactive dialogue may provide the option to tell people to quit it and it would be nice if you could.

I get a bad feeling Vivienne could definitely have that capacity to be cruel. I could be wrong, but just a feeling I get from what's been revealed of her so far. I'm really looking forward to the interactive banter! It always felt a little... off... that you couldn't join in, but that's mostly because that's how I am in real life - will just totally interject myself in there. LOL

And yes, I hope we can tell folks to simmer down if they're getting too snippy. I have Mama Bear instincts (even though I'm childless, LOL) and those drove me nuts during some of the DA2 banter.

Also looking forward to the fact we can reflect on and talk to our companions about our decisions. That was something I found really cool and awesome in DAO... that back in camp after Redcliffe's drama and I ended up having to sacrifice Isolde to save her son (I didn't go through enough dialogue options to realize I could've gone to the Circle and saved Isolde and Connor), Alistair confronted me on that and I was able to give my viewpoint about why I decided what I did (and it was with a heavy heart). That entire scene was amazing. I'm looking forward to more like that!

I really don't want every interaction with Solas to be him telling me interesting things while I go "dur hur, I don't get it!"

Oh yeah, no! I like Fenris too, I didn't mean to seem like I'm calling him awful in general. Just in regards to how he treats Merrill. Tbh, I don't really get character hate... I tend to always love everyone. There's a couple I'm indifferent to, like Oghren. But that's mostly because I always leave the Deep Roads for last and don't get him 'til practically the end of the game. Sebastian is the first and only companion I've actively disliked (for BW in general, not just DA), and even then I could (mostly) tolerate him up until the first time I got to the ending...

But yeah, totally agree with all of that! I've been real interested in this interactive banter thing since it was first mentioned; it's such a good idea. And this judgment thing now intrigues me as well... I like the concept of companions challenging me, but when thinking about it in past games, I can think of more poor implementations than successful ones. My favorite example is KOtOR. I have FORCE CHOKED random civilians for literally NO reason other than that I found them annoying, in FRONT of Bastila... and did she say anything? Nope! Sure didn't But when I use force persuade because I don't feel like I should have to lose 100 credits just for going to a quest hub? OH, THE HORROR! It's like... Bastila pls. Your priorities.  -_-

So yeah, here's hoping for balance! I love companion characters having agency... but it shouldn't come at the cost of player agency, either. WHY NOT BOTH???

Maybe I should clarify: I don't have a problem with disagreeing or arguing.  I had no problem with any of the banters in DA:O and there were plenty of disagreements and arguing.  I just don't like how far Fenris and Anders went and that there was no way to suggest they back off.  The interactive banters may alleviate some of the problems I had with it.  I would have loved the option to tell Fenris to stop when he called Merrill a monster or to tell Anders to get lost when he tried to tell Hawke to break up with Merrill.

Yes, this! All of this. I have nothing to add because you worded it exactly as I'd have put it, but just have to echo my 100% agreement.

edit: PFFT. DR, you snuck in behind me! my slow conversational skills strike again. but also 100% agree with your well-worded thoughts too!
yeah, solas thread! we can just spend all day agreeing with each other, heh.  <3

I agree, I really do. Fenris is my 2nd favourite DA2 companion (Isabela is no1) but sometimes when he talked to Merrill I really wanted to intervene.

I'm the same on interjecting, can't keep my mouth closed.

Tbh when I play the Redcliffe mission in DA:O I opt to ignore the circle option, it makes the decision much harder. Some people honestly dislike Alistair for questioning you at the camp afterwords, and I'm like "???" God forbid that a character question the PC, right?

While I did rivalmance Merrill with Aggressive! Hawke it came off as him realizing that he loved Merrill and didn't want to see her hurt.

Hawke's response to the banter in Mark of the Assassin where Merrill talks about the Templars of the city checking her out (in non-mage hunting capacity) should have probably been a clue not to insult her in front of her lover.

When you think about it, the characters that question the PC often tend to be the most disliked. Miranda in ME2 is the best example of this. I loved that Miranda was confident and questioned Shepard's decisions, it made her more believable, but most people call her a "******" and I really do not get it.

People love their power fantasies, it seems.

Yeah.  I could see Vivienne being willing to use personal tragedy as ammunition based on what we know of her right now.  There's a lot of potential for other characters being truly awful to Cole too.  Cole has already triggered all my MUST PROTECT instincts so I'd love the ability to put that into action in the game.

Yes!  I'm really, really excited to see the reflection scenes now.  I loved them in DA:O too.

I'm with you on the game store experience, because I've never had any kind of weird experiences like that (the closest thing was when I came in to pick up my collector's edition box of Guild Wars 2, but that just turned the heads of everyone I walked past in the mall, which left me with a huge grin on my face). Early on I had some slight - almost non existent -  flak for being female and playing a game, but long before I ever used a mic. Maybe I'm just lucky to not come across those people, or how I act just makes them think I'm a dude, but it's nowhere near okay to be like that.

Absolutely this; you guys just need Dragon and I as store buddies. Doesn't even have to be just women, it's not okay to be like that to anyone.

Not everyone! There's always Solas, at the very least!
Which can I just say I am so excited for his perspective on the Fade. Ever since I first played a mage in Origins I've been like, ohhh. A spirit? Neat! I'm gonna go talk to it!

Meanwhile every other character screams "NO DON'T TOUCH THAT!"
and I'm already over there poking it like, "...huh? why???"

solas is gonna be such an awesome change. we can investigate and poke things together!
and also defend cole from the likes of vivi and whoever else might decided to be mean.

People hated Kaidan for being a bit of a t*t in ME2, but I actually liked his reaction on Horizon because he was willing to stand up for his (possibly misguided at the moment) beliefs and not just automatically fawn all over Shepard. My only problem with that interaction is how what we could say in response fell a bit flat.

I would be annoyed if companions argued about and questioned everything I did, but throwing some of that in there would be nice. I like when characters feel like their own people, not just mindless followers. Sometimes even the powerful leader of things needs an opportunity to question themselves and their beliefs.

Exactly.

I love the idea of companions talking to you after big decisions, even if they weren't in your party at the time. It also builds the PC's personality and relationships with NPCs.

I have never seen that banter.  Maybe because I played a sarcastic Hawke?

Yes, yes they do.  I'm actually hoping for more questioning of decisions in DA:I.  It's more believable to me that not everyone is going to be okay with everything you do.

I was exaggerating a little there, yeah.  <3  Solas will totally be a balm for the Cole hate I'm expecting (also outside the game; I poked my head in the Cole thread once and never, ever again).

I don't understand how people aren't interested in Solas at all.  We're going to learn new things about the world from him!  Stuff we were sure was true about the Fade may not be!  You don't want to learn?  :(

I've been thinking about this and what PW was saying in the Nerd Appropriate interview yesterday about having a plan for a romance and then finding someone you like more when meeting them. I think that's what's going to happen with Solas. Some people are just looking at him and going, "Meh." but when you get to talking with him and getting all conversationally deep, I think there will be tons more appreciation for the guy.

He's bald. He's not hot because he's bald. Clearly you can't learn from, interact with, or like characters you don't find "bangable." <_<

Never mind we don't even know the characters all that well yet. Even Varric is likely different from the suave storyteller attitude of DA2. I may have initial preferences from the information we do have about the characters, but I know better to wait and meet them in game before passing any sort of judgement. Besides, even if I don't actually like a character it doesn't mean the character is bad or uninteresting. It means they were written in such a way that they have drawn a feeling or emotion from me, negative or otherwise. And that is precisely how it should be.

well, I'm still not interested in Isabela's character, even after a second run at DA2 (Arishok say "Hi" Isabela ). didn't find her interesting when seeing some picks of her, never found her interesting in game. is just about tastes. some of those people may find Solas interesting after interacting with him in game, some will still be indifferent, and others will hate the character.

well, I'm still not interested in Isabela's character, even after a second run at DA2 (Arishok say "Hi" Isabela ). didn't find her interesting when seeing some picks of her, never found her interesting in game. is just about tastes. some of those people may find Solas interesting after interacting with him in game, some will still be indifferent, and others will hate the character.

I love Isabela, you don't, and that's fine. Different strokes for different folks. I mean I'm not that interested in IB at the moment, but that could change after I actually play the game.

Maybe when I play the game I won't like Solas, Cass or Cole. Though I severely doubt that, it still could happen, but I will try to reserve judgement as best I can. Which is poorly, apparently.

Damn, seems everyone here plays ME3MP on Ps3 or PC :( sad little lonely Xboxer here :(

Which is ridiculous, since I have a top gaming PC, which I use for almost all my gaming, and that I do own ME3 on... but I suck at MP with a mouse+keyboard! I can kick ass with a Xbox controller though! Which is again ridiculous, because I find single player soooo much easier on M+K. Meh, I'm weird

And on the whole buying games in stores, I've usually been pretty lucky. The GAME store I go to is filled with pretty cool people, who actually do notice that its completely normal for girls to game  Is this a thing that maybe is just more common over here, in the UK? Or have I just been lucky?

That said, that doesn't mean the other customers get it. I remember going in once, all prettified from just having had a free makeup session in a store, walked in with my mum, and gone, yup, this is the game I'm here for, picking up Dante's Inferno, and seeing a few teenage boys with their faces like WTF? But that was more of a funny experience than a horrible one still.
