I miss the days I could lock my Sim children up in a burning closet. The most effective form of population control.

I used to make rooms without doors and use the move_object cheat to trap a sim in the room until they peed their pants, went crazy and died.

Edit: But not before making them mop up their own urine. Wheheehh.

I knew there was evil lurking in your heart, Katie. This gladdens me.

Spoiler

Only for children.  I rejoiced at the Little Lamplight mod that let me kill those  backtalking little shits in Fallout 3.  (jk...i like kids. they are our future...).

Don Quixote? Didn't some absolutely charming mongrel write that? Delightful, I would never have believed it could come out of one of those people, have you seen those little towns? How quaint, amazing he wasn't so polluted by incest that he couldn't be taught to write! We'll have to try with one of our little dogs. What was his name? Cervantio or something I believe, he's all the rage at court. The Queen has asked if he can visit wearing one of those darling little hats those Mexicans wear, they've taken off at the capital. Spain, Mexico, what difference does it make, love, they all speak that useless jibber jabber.

;) That was over the top, sorry. Still, racism is not defined by rejection of an entirety - if anything, we have consistently assimilated what we find positive in a culture and thrown the rest away... That said, more modern definitions include any form of preconceived opinion, which to me is something all people do with all other people, making it uselessly broad. Probably also why the subject in fiction gets so quickly heated and pointless - everyone is using different definitions, different levels of wrong, etc.

Yeah, but, a decir verdad, if you've been able to master all the subtle verb conjugations of that quaint jibber-jabber (as few anglosaxons can...) then you'd find it much more difficult to look down on them... Sure, Mexico, nice food, Chihuahua dogs but superficial appreciation is just stereotyping which is another form of ignorance... Oversimplyfying taking the superficial as the essence, a very crass mistake.

I find myself in Spain and in the unfortunate (or fortunate!) position of being too pissed to properly address your arguments...

So the following is a just a rather pathetic attempt at addressing your well-made arguments...

I've no doubt that many educated people can be racists... However, most racism is found among the uneducated or those who have taken no care to think, to take a step back and educate themselves... Of course it is all a matter of definition, particularly of the word "educated" or "education".... what i find it difficult to believe is that one could seriously study, say, and admire Don Quixote and find no redeeming features whatsoever in people of Spanish or Hispanic culture.

A lot of racism is found in misconceptions and the idea of the "noble savage" would be one of these, on an equal footing with the idea of the "****** with a heart of gold", these may be steps in the right direction but they still damn the majority on the basis of purportedly valuing a fictional minority... (and, yeah, Solas does just this on the balcony when he expresses surprise that the Dalish could have produced a Lavellan... but as I say, that is a realization and is a step in the right direction, though still deeply mired in prejudice).

I would never equate ethics with intelligence or education and I don't think it would be fair to read this into my answer to you... However, my definition of education may be slightly wider than yours because it does take into account a certain cultural relativism, what could you expect from someone who is of mixed heritage and works as a translator?  I would not call someone who was exclusively schooled in anglosaxon culture say, "educated", in fact I would find the very notion risible... We gain education as we leave our comfort zones... and Solas is a long, long, long way away from his own... He is only beginning to adapt... But adapting he is... So I think it is somewhat unfair or premature to class him as a racist.

My views are more or less along these lines. I appreciate his complexity so much. Also, as someone whose degree is in Spanish literature and studied for a bit in Spain,  and has some passion toward history and culture there the Don Quixote example touches me right in the cultural-nerd-nostalgia parts, but alas, I must leave now.

All this racism and godhood makes me conflicted on whether I should play sims or elder scrolls... On one hand, I could play god and create sims characters hate people and mean-spirited and possibly throw them into a pool with no railing... On the other hand, I could be the one being thrown racist insults about rugs and n'wahs but ascend into godhood..

Best of both worlds.  Play Skyrim or Oblivion and install a ton of immersion mods.

People, highly educated people, using your definition can absolutely be racist in the ways that Liz described. I have seen it. Experienced it. I am not going to wave my degrees around, but it permeates academia, just like every other sphere. And I would be careful to equate certain privileges afforded to a select group with being "educated." Higher education, being well-traveled, get access to culture and arts (ETC.) is the type of cultural capital often granted to a privileged few.

You can use Unrelenting Force to go kid-bowling

Generally I find kids in games to be creepy but otherwise inoffensive.  Except Heavy Rain.  God, the kids in that game were so uncanny valley.  My desire to get a perfect ending and my desire to let the creepy glassy eyed f***er drown have never been in such powerful conflict.

Kieran was adorable, though

I couldn't kill them. I'm so pathetic. I mean, all right, not killing spiders or moths or even those friggin horrible daddy long-legs because I...just...can't...

But Sims? They're not even REAL! I get horribly guilty, even if it's just leaving the babies in dirty nappies for more than a minute. Or forgetting to refill the dog bowl. It kills me. I feel like I've failed and I'm a horrible person.

Maybe I just imagine that one day, technology will turn to such advance AI that my computer will become like EDI and will then bring up the treatment of my Sims as an example of why humans are sh*t.

And different excuses.

Very much so; I was only thinking of different layers of defensiveness owing partially to what anyone thinks anyone else means. It's a very loaded word, and it may be baffling to some how one could say "he's racist but I love him anyway," when their definition prevents anything but a punch in the face if that were so. Kind of like previous arguments over whether or not he flat-out lied. For one person, it's really no different from or worse than the overall deception and can be 'judged' equally (whether negatively or positively). For another, any amount of hair-splitting or bending can salvage something otherwise unforgivable; the distinction between the two completely decides the argument.

... So I'm not the only one who did that?

I mean, uh... You monsters! How could you!?

If the sims didn't want to be in that pool then they'd try harder to get out.

I mean, I also have never done anything like that.

Anyone wonder what the Inquisitor's Anchor scar looks like?

I think it would resemble the foci.

Maybe like this? (ignore the face and horrible rendering):

Spoiler

really wish they would have included the anchor marking on the ingame model.

I don't know. I once made a male sim, made him have relationships with all of the women in town, they all had babies from him.

Then I killed him by fire, brought him back from the dead as a playable ghost, married him to a mortal woman, and made them have three children. Two of these children were born as ghosts.

Then I couldn't do much more, cause the town was basically the most incestuous inbred town ever, and I got bored.

Oh, and of course, I let some other sims die in various fashion, cause I wanted a rad cemetery full of colored ghosts. Ghosts are the best.

Yes, but I guess my concept of education would encompass also the reaction to the above... So you've had a gap year in India but did you actually learn anything from being there? Did you question your own values? If you didn't I wouldn't say you were "educated", education is not about reinforcing your own stereotypes but about questioning them....

Back on point I think Solas is beginning to do this.

Oooh, I like that idea.  A burn/sear mark that looks like the patterns on the orb.  It doesn't seem to cover his/her whole hand.

Really disturbing fact: The children in Skyrim all have dialouge recorded for being in combat, and those 'thanks for killing my enemy' letters you can get?  The game has one from Lars Battle-Born in the event of Braith's death.  At some point killable children were considered as part of the game.

I'm glad they cut that option.  That's just... wrong.

My weird quirk like this is taking cash rewards off NPCs I know are poor. It makes me feel so, so, so bad. I drop loot items I don't want anymore in their homes because I figure they can sell them. I RP that hard. Or I'm just slightly nuts. Either way.

In real life, I don't kill anything if I can avoid it. Spiders, houseflies, bugs, slugs or worms on sidewalks, whatever. Catch and release. Move to a safe spot. If you're not hurting me, I will not hurt you, little buddies. We're all just trying to do our thang.

However, I often delight in being a murderous lunatic in virtual environments.

On topic: Solas knows killing is unfortunate, but he can't seem to get enough of those Fade battles...

I actually have no clear opinion if he is "racist" or really simply a "misanthrope". I even tend to think the latter because he simply dislikes everybody. He's basically just arrogant. For me racism is "thinking somebody is worth less just because of his heritage". That's like sexism ("thinking somebody is worth less because of the gender") and all other discrimination to me -- it's all wrong. In any case the word "racism" itself has a pretty clear co-notation in our Western world, no matter how exactly we define the term. I assume that everybody knows what context this word floats in.

But however, it is something I dislike about him very much, no matter how we call it. This closed-mindedness of his is the reason why I could never romance him.

I wish that people here excuse it the way they do (which is entirely) because he is not real but only a bunch of pixels. But I did meet people in real life who were just like that, "He is a racist but I still love him", usually followed by "and he does have a point there when you start to think about it". And no definition had anything to do with it.

I never found all. But in the course of the game you will get a few war table missions which allow you to get some. Also you can buy a mysterious boy in Val Royal which gets you a huge nug. And some you can buy if you recruit the horse master in the Hinterlands.
