So I'm almost done with the DLC. I still have the dragon to beat, but  I finally got my 5 minutes with Ameridan and now I understand why people have been hinting at/talking about  him and his story and the parallels. And of course, the memories and their story and naturally, those of us with Lavellans who romanced Solas have a special parallel. Sigh. Spiral, here I come again.

 

I'm sure I'll have more thoughts. I'm just tired right now, which is why I didn't go for the dragon yet.

Indeed, though one still has to recognize the difference. I don't consider disliking things about someone the same as hating them personally. If I did, there'd be a lot of people I call friends now that wouldn't be with that train of thought. They don't become important unless someone gives me a reason to let it get in the way of how I feel about them.

 

The people themselves who dislike that might not see it that way, but that's not important. What the individual thinks is.

 

I think IB says it best when he says he hates Trevinter (as a political entity) but just finds it too much effort to hate individual Vints...

I nominate Ary to take over armour desgin for DAI.  I ended up hating pretty much all the Dalish armour for women in DAI.  The mage armour look werid (and horrible compared to the longcoat the men get AND that longcoat exists for women but only for NPCs.  The Scout armour is great, but needs to have the cloth and chainmail switched - like a Merrill mod does in DA2 - because a chainmail full body suit next to bare skin?  Urgh, no.)  But this is just amazing.  Pratical, pretty and Dalish.

Damn, the thread went dead for longer than I expected And after so much activity too. I think that Solas does indeed hate specifically the Qun, though if I told you that I hated Islam, I'm sure a lot of people would call me racist. And I indeed do have my issues with Islam. I don't hate Arabs and Muslims, however. I am sure it's the same here, remembering of course that this is not a perfect analogy.

 

I have issues with all religions period because it inevitably  becomes corrupted (and I am not prepared to 'have faith' in something that clearly doesn't have the power, or alternatively doesn't care to prevent all the terrible cruelty and injustice that exists in the world),  of course the problem is really just human behaviour, but religion has become a fantastic framework for people to justify all their terrible deeds from time immemorial I guess who's dealing out the persecution varies from generation to generation.   I am absolutely behind Solas' view on the Qun and I can't say I ever interpreted him as racist.  I think he sees the modern races and thinks they are diminished from what they should be, but all the evidence suggests that they actually are less that what they were, it would be very hard for him to completely ignore this loss in his interpretations.  While I can see why he can be considered 'racist', I don't think that is what is going on - I think it all comes back to one thing that we were told about his character -  its more complicated than that.

Exactly. Your problem isn't with Religion, but the people that abuse it. By that same token, this is me as well. As flawed as I think Islam is, I really couldn't single it out for issues, all the big abrahamic religions have their issues, some more than others, but still.

 

Thing is though, it's the people that put it to practice, the people that bend it to their will to serve their purpose. You (and I) wouldn't have a problem with it if Kings hadn't murdered to be able to edit what they wanted in holy documents, if they hadn't changed hands and been altered time and time again. That's not religion, that's the people. Religion itself has brought us culture, laws, civilization, all of that and its only real flaw is that religion can be interpreted in so many different ways, and the holy documents and literature don't have someone around to say "Canon". And even if it did, the canon may not always be good. Such as the Qun, which is very rigid in its interpretation.

 

 

But one would have to be rather intellectually dishonest with oneself to say they hate religion, especially when there are many religious practices that did not lead to war and corruption. It's the big ones that were used by leaders and those with money that were abused the most.

 

Anyway, to relate this to Solas, Solas may hate the Qun (more doctrine than religion), and that may be the same as hating those who follow it like sheep, but I don't think so. Like what was said, he seems more cynical about Bull than anything else. You can hate something about someone and not hate them. Just to reiterate.
