Plus, he's going to leave her eventually anyway, so it would be nice to have her be able to stand on her own two feet and have other friends to rely on, rather than being a sobbing mess, because I can't see that happening to her.

It is perfectly possible to do both.  IMO there's nothing wrong with Lavellan being distraught over Solas's breakup and departure.  People get upset over things, and it's part of being human.  Or elf, or whatever.  As long as there's an interesting story to tell there, and she develops from it as a character.

Yes.  Ish.  I don't really wanna say more than that because spoilers.  Solas does have some interesting comments in the DLC, as do Cass, Dorian, Cole, Sera, and Viv.

Piggybacking, also not spoiling, but -

I will say that you should bring Cassandra on the main quest. I just did because she's my favorite warrior but she has a very good part.

Oh yes, I didn't mean to imply that she wouldn't be upset. Of course she will be, initially. I just don't want to have written myself in a corner where Solas is literally her only friend and she never gets over him because he's her one true love or something. I personally don't want to have to go back and retcon things and go "Just kidding she had all these cool Inquisition friends I have just literally never mentioned."

Agreed. Even though his leaving is an inevitable thing to hang a story around, showing these sides to both Maiwe and her relationship with Solas does show what she's growing from. I think. Taking the good and the bad - AKA why she's upset but also how she draws strength from her experiences.

I agree! But I think I've veered too much into the romance with Solas- more than I intended. It's not as much about her anymore, which is what I wanted. This thread corrupts me. It's not that I don't love Solas as a character, but I feel like I don't necessarily have much to add on him as a writer, so I'm just repeating what others have said before, probably in better fan fictions. Plus, he's going to leave her eventually anyway, so it would be nice to have her be able to stand on her own two feet and have other friends to rely on, rather than being a sobbing mess, because I can't see that happening to her.

You don't have to have Solas as some kind of overbearing presence in your story. But putting in scenes that will later demonstrate why she's so upset, rather than solely drawing on the readers as players/people invested in the Solavellan story, and how she moves on. Now, it's going to be mostly players and fans who read your story but maybe don't assume that deep knowledge and don't feel bad about showing some fluff before you delve into the pain and character development that makes her grow.

Now I feel like we're workshopping. ;)

You've sort of put in a few mentions of them, so do develop that too. It doesn't take a great deal or series of long chapters to convey a sense of friendship. But your opening chapters so far have dealt heavily with her insecurity and lack of confidence over this secret she feels will undermine everyone's faith in her, and a faith that her own clan didn't share. It's not a corner you're in, it's a very strong premise, especially with your personal perspective. You'll have to deal with the secret and her fear, which you can do just with Solas at first, even while you have friendship-building moments with other characters.

Then maybe take a chapter or two to cover friendships.  I feel like Cole and Dorian always wind up sneaking into my Solavellan anyway because they're just that awesome, and I wanna write them  :D

Regarding Corypheus: I don't think he even needed to be terrifying. Was never terrified of Loghain, for instance. It would have been enough for Corypheus to be nuanced and sympathetic, which he was not in Inquisition. They had a great start with him back in Legacy, and at the start of this game, really. It just never panned out, and the most interesting Corypheus becomes again is during the Leliana/Calpernia quest line. It's a shame, it really is. There was such potential; guy was one of the Magisters, and ended up feeling like a footnote to the Dread Wolf reveal.

I like complicated and potentially sympathetic antagonists.  Calpernia, Loghain, even Meredith and Orsino to some extent despite the limited writing for them.  But for my Big Bads, I prefer characters who make my blood run cold with dread.  Jon Irenicus, Darth Sion, Roose Bolton, etc.  It probably goes back to watching Star Wars Episode 5 as a little kid in daycare, and hearing Darth Vader's mechanical breathing with the Imperial March

This.  What's doubly sad is that he comes off sort of one-note for most of the game until that final line and you're like '****, now i feel things.'  Then, after the reveal, Morrigan's epilogue and it's like - he's really important.  They really should have done more with him. Now all I have to fear is solas turning into a sneering villain "YOU HAVE FOILED ME FOR THE LAST TIME VHENAN".

Now all I have to fear is solas turning into a sneering villain "YOU HAVE FOILED ME FOR THE LAST TIME VHENAN".

That would be hot for one moment while Gareth David-Lloyd molds his melodic voice to the tones of a villain, and then wildly hilarious because of the scrunchy-rage face.

@GITON - (IF IT WASNT OBVIOUS) I need you to write me a scene when they enter the Black City and it's EMPTY.  (except maybe for June in the corner gardening and is like 'oh hello new falons, i didn't know anyone else could get in here!  would you care for some lemonade?')

UNPH.  Yes.  I found the few glimpses we got of angry, dangerous, Dread Wolf during his personal quest to be so damn hot.  I may have gotten a bit distracted by that, and not paid much attention to the murder and burninating that came after

Something something Magisters, something Solas something. Something something Samson. That's my version of what's going on, but I'm one of those unreliable narrators.

Nikki, it's your job to bring the Din.

You forgot impromptu fanfic workshop.

I need to leave for an event but I keep poking at my own fic and being really annoyed by my face right now (edit: dry skin patches and makeup do not mesh).

Step 1: Write the thing

Step 2: Poke at the thing

Step 3: Despair at the thing

Step 4: Eat cookies with kadan

Step 5: Read the thing the next morning, say "F*** it's good enough" and release it into the wide, wide world.

Oh my goodness, the love is so strong!!!! <3

Let me love you!!!!

theofficehug_zps145fe1ca.gif

I got about 10 hours of it.  I did literally everything.  And had to take a pause because I was overwhelmed with elf feels.

But 10 hours of playtime for a $15 DLC was IMO pretty good.  Most of the previous DLCs have been 3-4 hours max for about $10.

I got quite a bit of time out of the DLC, so far, as I haven't totally finished it (yeah, yeah, crazy completionist over here, hehe!)  I find the story very interesting and in-depth.  I am digging the lore that's coming out of it, along with the new characters.  Also, Harding.   All in all, I'm very happy with it, even if it wasn't EGGSACTLY what I wanted.

You've left out the long lost forgotten half step of 3.5 where you wail plaintively to Dumat for assistance.

That pretty much sums up my thought process when writing fics :P

Either that, or this works too:

Pretty much, yes. I'm working on a series of short Solavellan bits around the theme of "awake" and the issue is poking as well as determining which things to write and then how long for each. Some I think will be teasers, and some will stand alone forever. Which of my ficlets do I orphan?

Yep, clearly time for me to leave the house before I go crazy.
