It's such a shame that his attempts to help the Dalish recover their history failed.

Obviously, being desguised as a common mage doesn't help. If only Solas would reveal himself as who he is.

But then again, there are a few issues. First, he is weakened and lacks the means to demonstrate his power. Secondly, the elves don't trust Fen'Harel.

Would you be willing to participate in our conspiracy theorists support group? I see great potential in you.

Good point. I never thought about this before, but I agree. I was a Dalish rogue who made Alistair king (because I'd rather support somebody I know and trust than somebody who double-crosses me in the face of danger). There was no ritual (because I did not know what Morrigan wanted this child for, and so it seemed to risky to me). Alistair would not stay with me and Ferelden needed its king, so I landed the killing blow. I liked this ending very much (I like fatalism in fiction, makes for good stories).

In general I think Alistair's romance was done very well. You could speak to him anywhere, not only in camp, he would approach you on his own accord and now only wait for you to speak up (like when he asks you about your opinion, that's pretty neat), he could get mad and even leave you, and he reacted realistically based on the situation. It was well done, well integrated.

I disliked this most about Solas: he would not break up (before the vallaslin scene). You could be a jerk after starting the romance, do horrible things (kill his spirit friend, tell him you liked doing it, drink from the well and tell him you'd abuse its power etc.), but he would stay. Like they had stripped him of any determination and strength for a while.

But I guess you could roleplay that as him needing the inquisition for his own ends and Cory being a threat to the world rather than just a subset of characters...

Question about romanced Solas.

So I was listening to the gossiping Orlesian nobles in Skyhold, and one of them asks "Have there been exchanges? Gifts, or perhaps betrothals?" And his lady companion replies "Of a sort." They've clearly been talking about you and your LI in the past so... what's Solas giving us?

Yeah, that last bit is a pretty major hurdle to all of this. Well, both are, but the whole millenia of rumors and traditions and legends about him wouldn't really inspire trust in the Dalish in general.

So it makes me wonder just in what ways he did try. What carefully chosen words did he use.

I don't know about the mistress ending ... I put my warden as Alistair's mistress and he never even mentioned her in Inquisition

And why should he? Isn't this something a king keeps close to his chest???

I also remember them expressing some manner of surprise at the pairing, which is like… two apostate elves? Scandalous. How unexpected.

I think that's only if your Inquisitor is also a mage. Mine is a rogue, and they discussed it briefly before, but said something about how we weren't high born, so it was boring. Brats.

What do you mean? Or rather: I don't understand what (of what I said) you relate this to. I agree that he needs the Inquisition and that Cory is a threat.

How is this related to him not ending the romantic relationship with Lavellan even though she does things that completely contradict his morality and belief system?

I think the dialouge is generic and not based on who you romance.  It's like how the bartender says you're sleeping with your LI even if all you've done is kiss.

EDIT: Clarity.

While not as exciting as the idea of Solas trying to pick out gifts that aren't objectively terrible, that does make far more sense.

You are correct. It is not.  I get the same exact dialogue with Trev/Cullen.  They are just gossips.

I should really stay out of Fiona threads.  And should not post in them.

This is what I admittedly like. (AND LOTS OF OTHER SNIPPED STUFF)

In most games there are really not many people that would lurk with me, so it is role-play or nothing for me! I have opinions, but the way I tend to form them is by repeatedly challenging those of others and adjusting based on which parts seem to make sense, like some sort of argumentative echolocation. Most people don't like that, so appreciation for characters on my part are just "oh, that's a good virtue/flaw!" distant. And while I'm not as "yuck, mammalian squishy feelings!" as I was as a hatchling, game romance in particular usually comes off stilted and awkward to me, so it's much further down than overall development of a character to me.

It is probably also weird to a lot of people that I play a lot of games where I can personally relate to... no one! There has been a disappointing lack of reptilian representation. I appreciate Thane, Bioware! I was happy with Solas and accordingly have more personal biases than usual (any at all) because I thought "we could be friends, mammal!"

All right King Alistair specifically didn't have to mention his mistress, but in the letter my Warden wrote she said nothing of the King. I was left wondering if they are even still together.

That is possible. But he does break up before the final battle after all. So either he changes his mind or did not actually worry about such issues.

I imagine that if this were the reason why Solas didn't break up sooner, that it was another case of him thinking and waiting until he felt he had to take action. Perhaps he didn't want to make his departure after that much harder. Dumping and leaving without ever returning, after the ball was obtained (if it wasn't shattered) really would have made her feel used and like nothing to him. Just taking his ball and going home, as it were.

Some of the gossip is based on who you romance.

If you romance Sera, the betrothal and/or wedding dress line gets an "or is that two wedding dresses?" line added.

And while I never could make out this stuff myself, apparently if you romance Solas, they talk about you both as elves and say it's kind of boring but makes sense and might be calling you knife ears.

Fiona has always been at Skyhold after Abyss for me (in fact, she has a very moving converstation with Inky about 'not regretting your past actions'), but she does vanish near the endgame.

That is possible. But he does break up before the final battle after all. So either he changes his mind or did not actually worry about such issues.

There's the meta knowledge that we have as players, which is that Solas considered telling her the truth and staying with her, which doesn't preclude the need for him to go off afterward with his orb, but it would've been in a different context (much like Alistair as king is stuck ruling while the Warden in my game is off on her search).

So...he hesitated, not necessarily changing his mind as probably more like he let himself want and hope and think about possibilities. He didn't figure that he would fall so deeply in love either. That threw a wrench into his plan that he eventually realized the significance of and pulled it out for the sake of whatever his plan for greater good might be. He claims he distracted her but all of this, and his love for her, distracted him, made him consider not just veering off course, but crashing, getting out and not looking back.
