Writing fan fiction that focuses specifically on your Lavellan, rather than being left open to interpretation or for people to self insert, can be tricky. There are so many other pieces of fiction out there, and many of them are well written. To stand out at this point in the game, you have to give something unique, that hasn't been seen before. I think that's where the tendency to come up with characters who seem so perfect, so utterly flawless- because that's how some think they'll stand out. To each their own, I suppose.

I think it also depends why someone is writing. I know I tend to do more compact things that leave room for self-insertion but if people are doing tales of their own characters, often it's mostly for themselves, I think. It's natural to want people to read your stuff and like it, but sometimes it's more of a matter of something that's knocking itself against your brain, needing to just get out onto a page somewhere.

I kind of just release my stuff into the wild and appreciate every single person who has read it. But then again, sometimes I write because I imagine sharing, but usually it just has to come out. Not limited to fiction, but also other stuff.

But yes, there's a huge reason why fics with self stand-ins are so popular.

I for one like Dagna a lot. She is your typical nerd expert on something. Bianca came off as an rather self absorbed impertinent jerk. Didn't liked her one bit. After the ending scene with her *I* was the one wanting rip off her eyeballs.

Mmh. I must confess that writing Lavellan utterly furious with Solas is quite delightful. That...might make me a bad person, though. Eh heh.

Writing's just how we deal with our frustrations. I don't think anyone blames you.

I will write the Willow Star*shiniest Lavellan that ever Star-shined if the great Halla-Muse in the sky bade me to do so. No, it doesn't make particularly engaging writing, but it depends on your rhetorical audience. Who are you doing this for? Why are you publishing it? Who is your audience?

If you skew your work to please some nebulous audience, yes, you may get readers, but, in the end, the pleasure of the craft is lost. If you have fun writing Willow Star*Shine, good on you.

Luckily, there is a huge market for Corypheus Star*Shine erotic-temple-musings. Huge. But the bleatings of my Halla Muse were lucky in that regard.

I would probably call that therapeutic.

Dagna is great. There are not enough smart and cheerful characters in games that are not annoying. Stupid cheerful annoys me personally (probably just jealous). But I like smart people who are not all depressed about the world. So when Solas stopped being cheerful and got all gloomy, I thought "Oh no, not this again..."

There are many characters in games and movies that I adore. I don't actually hate characters, I simply dislike some or feel indifferent about them. I don't wish any character to die a horrible death. I don't understand why people get so upset over characters they like or dislike. Bad writing and OOC behavior makes me angry sometimes but not characters themselves. *shrugs*

Same here. Bianca didn't really live up to what I was expecting. I find her quite Sueish (we can't even judge her? after she is one of the reason Red Templars exist?!? when we can judge someone who trow a GOAT! not even to a person, but to a wall?!?and no way to tell her where she can put her treat?? REALLY?!?!?) and overall, very little likeable.

To me, the writer tried too hard to make her special and badass, but ended up with a Mary Sue with little to like about.

Yeah, that's just therapy for me

I'm tooling around with a Shadowrun/Inquisition crossover where the Fourth World was basically Arlathan.  And my Lavellan and Solas are pretty horrible to each other at first.  To her in this universe, he's just some weird elf who lectures her about the mark she acquired through sheer misfortune, and looks down his nose at everyone.  There might be yelling.  A lot of it.  Then I feel better

Oh, I know. I just like to be funny (sort of, because I know I fail at it) at my own expense. Learning to laugh at myself is good for me, I think. But more to the point, I enjoy writing characters in a state of anger in general. It sheds light on a different side of their personality for me, aiding me in determining what causes them to tick and anger and what burrows under their skin, and ultimately, simply teaching me plenty of them. But, yes, it is also a great for therapeutic reasons. Writing, especially of a character whose state of mind and emotional position are in likeness to yours, is a great way to release pent up negativity. I also found writing a dragon squishing someone you're annoyed with via sitting on them serves adequately as well, but that is another matter entirely.

I actually had this in my head the second I finished the game. Mostly because i was like 'i like the DA universe but like...i want guns and computers?'  (i remain angry that TSW is an MMO)

i would share this thought, but it's so insanely embarassing.  if you pop on chat tonight i can discuss.

If people wanted their Lavellan - or any character, really - to stand out, they'd do it best by making them real and relatable. We all have flaws to accompany our strengths. No one is perfect. A character that is portrayed as such is just a projected fantasy to me and will make me lose interest in a story. It's kind of like that one co-worker we've all had who is a legend in their own mind. You roll your eyes at their claims and grandeur and leave them to their own world.

My biggest gripe about Fiona is how she seemed... watered down? in DAI, but other characters suffered from that too. I can't hate the character for how the writing made her interact.

I had a whole elaborate cyberpunk/Dragon Age crossover.

And then I did nothing with it. But if anyone wants my notes, they can take a look.

I'm sorry...can someone please explain what a Mary Sue is?

Others have already giving definitions.  I used the term in Fiona and Maric's case because a lot Fiona's haters tend to call her Gaider's Pet Sue.  I was just pointing out that Maric has a lot of the same Sueish qualities that Fiona has.

Someone just commented on my fanfic that I write Solas as "thoughtful (sweet), mysterious, and passionate." And I hadn't thought about it before, but I was like "Yes. That is exactly how I like him."

I don't comprehend Dagna hate. Like, at all. She's adorable and chipper and sweet, and I love her. Her personality is infectious and uplifting, which with the world ending at the hands of a wannabe god Magister and causing plenty to be negative cookies, is a nice breath of fresh air. Blargh. People can be annoyed by her voice all they want, but I'll continue wanting to hug-squish her every time she speaks. I love Laura Bailey. Yes, she's in so much, but I adore her. Pffffft. I've been a fangirl of hers for years, so maybe having a girl crush on Laura Bailey plays into my liking Dagna (and Bianca) but nonetheless, why hate Dagna? I don't agree with nor like the Bianca hate (same with Fiona), but to an extent I can see where they're coming from. Dagna, though? Dagna? I'm just...I need to a flip table. Excuse me. Character hate gets on my nerves to the max. I can understanding not liking a character, but expressing your dislike and hate at every chance? I'll be seeing myself out, then. It would be nice if there were as many people expressing like as there are dislike out there. And I'm not even going to get into my issues with people using "Mary-Sue!" and "Gary-Stu!" as refutes. That term has become so broad and derogatory nowadays, to me it's hardly used adequately any longer. It's true meaning is too disputable.

*Coughs.* All right. I'm done. I've done my share of ranting. I apologize it, erm, annoys anyone. I just have some pent up frustration directed at negative cookies that I needed to release. I'll attempt to redirect myself to back on topic-ness.

On topic: Solas' eyes. My Lavellan undoubtedly stared into them for awkwardly long periods. and with incredibly bad timing.

". . .Inquisitor, is there something on my face?"

"No. . . No, there isn't. Well, there is, but that's not- It's not. . . Uhm. . ." Awkward laugh; loses self in eyes again.

". . ."

Dagna hate?

DAGNA?

People hate her?  How...?

On the topic of Mary Sues: history!   The term actually dates back to 1973 and was invented (along with a lot of other fandom terms) by the Star Trek fandom.  Lieutenant Mary Sue from the fanfic A Trekkie's Tale was written to parody the 'youngest and best Star Fleet officer' trope that cropped up in a lot of pre-internet fanfic.  The name stuck, but over the years the definition has shifted and multiplied.

And that's your fandom history fact for the day.
