You may have let yourself get a little too close to Conan. Maybe he's you as you wish you were, or maybe you're just afraid no one will like him and are trying to give him a free ride. Have some confidence in your writing! Conan is a good character. Give him room to be himself before you stifle him.

The best theory, IMO, is that Felassan is some sort of servant to one of the trapped gods. He is kind of a Fen'Harel fanboy but the stories he tells are of the myth-y, shrouded, Dread Wolf cold trickster sort that the Dalish repeat. If he were working FOR Fen'Harel, who as we can come to see, isn't exactly likely to be spreading/wanting the Dalish version of him, how his attempts to communicate with them have made him weary, etc. Briala knows almost nothing about the Dalish, so Felassan could've told her almost anything. Her people remain elves but she's primarily, even by the end, thinking about city elves and elves within the bounds of Orlais.

 

Felassan is avoiding sleep through the book because he knows that whoever his master is will catch him in the Fade. The book mainly takes place soon before the game (though Felassan and Briala have known one another for about 15 or so years, so there has been a possibly long game going on to get her to the network. But if you're a trapped immortal god, you've got time to burn.

 

While we have no idea when Fen'Harel awakened, again, if it were him, why would he want to spread those overblown tales of himself from the Fade while asleep 15 years ago? And it's possible that by the end of the book, he might already have awakened and taken up his identity of Solas and begun wandering. Felassan, I don't think, would've been quite that fanboy of whoever he clearly feared/was tied to. The Fen'Harel stories entertained him.

 

So it does seem more likely to be some other god, someone trapped in the Fade who needs the passphrase to get out. Also, the passphrase is Fen'Harel's blessing.....I don't think Fen'Harel is that much of an egoist. Could be but his whole thing about divinity, etc.

 

Ultimately, Felassan is a great character, but also a pawn. I wonder when we'll begin to learn more.

I strongly agree with this! Yes the reason I believe the one killing Felassan is not Solas because of that passphase. It is Fen'Harel's blessing. And clearly Fen'Harel was the one put it there in the first place so it would not make any sense if the damn Dread Wolf himself forgot something that important. Unless he's suffered from amnesia after spending so much time sleeping XD

Could you explain what you mean by this? Briala was the one who came up with the passphrase when she used the keystone to reactivate the eluvians, not Fen'Harel. It's a new passphrase. How could Fen'Harel know what it would be when Briala hasn't told anyone?

Could you explain what you mean by this? Briala was the one who came up with the passphrase when she used the keystone to reactivate the eluvians, not Fen'Harel. It's a new passphrase. How could Fen'Harel know what it would be when Briala hasn't told anyone?

Oh sure. At first I also thought the one killing Felassan was Solas because clearly that person want the passphase of the Eluvians. But when I found out the passphase was involve with Fen'harel and it was in elven, I changed my theory into Fen'Harel was the one that put it there to deactivate those eluvians. And I don't think Briala have the power to replace the passphase with a new one because she can't know ancient elven overnight and if the Dread Wolf was really behind this, I don't think he made it easy for everyone to override his magic. And yeah, just my silly thought, you'll never know what will happen.

I think it wouldn't be farfetched to assume Felassan taught Briala some of the elven language. He was teaching her about elven/Dalish culture after all. I was always under the impression that the passphrase would be whatever the holder of the keystone whispered after they placed it on the pedestal as Imshael says:
"Place the gem, whisper anything you like, and all the eluvians will awaken, ready to use."

I still waffle back and forth on who could have killed best elf, but I still lean more toward it was not Solas.

Briala came up with the passphrase.   That's the whole point of the keystone and why Felassan was killed (he didn't want Briala to tell him the passphrase she came up with because his geas would force him to betray her to the god he serves.)

Reminds me of a post I saw on tumblr which points out that anything about Solas becomes hilarious when you replace his name with 'The Dread Wolf, Fen'Harel'

'The Dread Wolf, Fen'Harel likes those little frilly cakes they make in Orlais.'

 

'The Dread Wolf, Fen'Harel is an ass man.'

Out of curiosity, did anyone do this quiz with just their character in mind, or as the Inquisitor also? I did mine as the latter and I think it affects the scores a great deal, the Inquisitor definitely is Mary Sue-ish. x)
