I got to wondering the other day how Solas approached the various clans that rejected him.  This was the result.  I'm now wishing I'd have worked Oghren in there somewhere, lurking in the shrubbery.

 

I mean, how would someone even do this? I work as a translator and I translate between two languages which co-exist in the same continent and sometimes I'm stumped... Let alone approaching folks from a culture that you know incredibly little about from a culture that they know incredibly little about... No wonder it went badly... I really can't see how it could go well...

It gives you some interesting insight into Dalish culture from the perspective of other elves, which I think is worth it. But lore wise, it doesn't add a ton.

I think his first problem was the hope/ assumption that the Dalish would be like the elves he remembered. Which is why he was so bitterly disappointed. In expat orientation they always tell you that reverse culture shock can bite you the hardest, because you're not expecting home to have changed or to feel so foreign.

Yes, and we know this because nowadays travel is so frequent, but Solas, for all his wisdom had no way of assessing what an obstacle this would be.

I couldn't.  I saw some fics where the Inquisitor painted over them and the art history nerd in me was HORRIFIED.  There are things more sacred than love, and beauteous art is one of them.  Everyone - including him - may die and be forgotten but those murals may last for a millenia.  They don't just tell the Inquistior's story, they tell the Inquisition's story. Everyone who was a part of it. His emotions and feelings about you and the Inquisition as well. It's all captured beautifully.   I get why people would do it for the dramz...but I couldn't.  My instinct would just be to close it off and even then, art is meant to be shared.  SAVE ALL THE ART - RIP HATRA.  *wails into the night over lost things*

Oh, personally I wouldn't do it. Especially knowing that they're a rare and lost form of art. But my girl's got a temper. Caught in the right (or wrong) mood, she'd destroy everything he'd touched. She'd really regret destroying the murals though… the minute she'd done it she'd regret it. For the exact reasons you've listed.

 

That said, I tend to head canon that she has them covered with curtains in order to prevent her sads/sledgehammer rampages.

(I actually wrote a short fic about it and then just never did anything with it)

I played the DLC after my whole clan was killed and after Solas removed the vallaslin. The Avvar gave my Lavellan a name and decided she's one of their people from now on. I don't know about you, but I was very touched. She has got a new family now. And they're really, really cool.

Same feels here, I'd never do any harm to those murals, not in a million years, and if anything, I'd grab Solas' ass and make him finish the fuck out of them, even before him explaining me anything or whatever. Finish the damn mural, we'll talk later. Maybe.

Chapter 4 is now up... which specifically has to do with Solas being a rock in a hard place, and which made Janesutin's video hit particularly hard.

 

And it's technically chapter 3 because I deleted chapter 1 because this is turning out to be more about my Lavellan and Solas rather than a more generic representation. Maybe I'll write up something about her clan and why she decides to join the Inquisition and make that the first chapter later....

 

I don't know... it's going where it's going. Though I must say I'm enjoying this a lot more than my previous fic (which I also deleted) which was focused on more of a blank-slate Lavellan that other people could project their characters on to. Got bored with that after a while.
