I played the DLC after my whole clan was killed and after Solas removed the vallaslin. The Avvar gave my Lavellan a name and decided she's one of their people from now on. I don't know about you, but I was very touched. She has got a new family now. And they're really, really cool.

I love the avvar. Their approach to spirits and magic is so wonderfully pragmatic.  After the Avvar and Ameridan my Lavellan was a lot more positive about her future with the Inquisition.  I headcanon it takes place AFTER solas leaves, so she was bummed and all like 'what the hell am i doing here' and then Ameridan - although sad - was still like 'the world is worth saving and WORK TOGETHER. BE FRIENDS!'  and then she just wanted to introduce everybody to the avvar.  it was a really nice dlc to have after the despairing final act.  i'm sure bw will turn up the emo when Solas returns, but for now...it's all kind of happy and positive.

I don't know... it's going where it's going. Though I must say I'm enjoying this a lot more than my previous fic (which I also deleted) which was focused on more of a blank-slate Lavellan that other people could project their characters on to. Got bored with that after a while.

 

Apart from drabble prompts or kmeme fills, I'm basically incapable of writing blank-slate PCs.  I get so bored after a chapter or two.

 

Though I think I'm finally at the point with Dragon Age where I'm getting the fanfiction out of my system.  It's only taken like half a year

I have a lot of feelings about him right now.  Just...too many I think.  What I find interesting about him is that he did this one nice thing and gets totally screwed over by it.  Whereas there really hasn't been any repurcussions(that we see yet) of a compassionate Inqusitor.  I pardoned(recruited) everyone and was the biggest goody-two shoes this side of the Frostbacks and she's doing great.  Samson's life is completely ruined by a set of love letters.  One kind, simple act changes the trajectory of his whole life and even then he NEVER resents Maddox. Not even for a second.   I'm not going to justify what he did with Cory, but his life has just been a snowball of pain.  You see that his trust has been systematically violated for years and then he turns - one last time - to someone that can give him some semblance of pride back and he KNOWS it's false but he needs to believe so hard in himself and something just...ugh.  I have a hard time not feeling bad for the guy.

I felt bad for him in DA2 and in DA:I as well. His story is just so sad. Then when I found out he became Corypheus' lackey in DA:I, I actually became quite fascinated with him (because hey, I didn't expect Samson to return in the next DA game in a rather big way). I know a lot of people prefer Calpernia, but I just have a lot of feels for Samson.

I agree completely about the art. They are beautiful. I would cry. 

 

I just know my Lavellan is crazy, and probably thinks she is as capable as Solas is. She'd paint that last panel, so it would be 90% beautiful artwork, and then one panel where it looks like a five year old did it. Centuries later, people will attribute the paintings to the herald of andraste, and say some 'unknown elven servant' painted the last one.

If things had just been a little bit different then he'd be the commander of the Inqusition's forces and Cullen would be Cornflakes' lacky.  That, to me, is what makes him so tragic.  People dismiss him as a villian too easily in favour of Cal (what is it with the DA fandom and preferring female mages over male templers?  First Carver and Beth and now Samson and Cal) but I think he backstory is actually really well done and his arc is tragic.  You can see so many similarities between him and Cullen.  Actually, that's just made up my mind for whether my Cullenmancing Trev is going mages or templers.  Going mages is going to give so many more Feels.

I'm still getting things out, and it has been helpful to use these feelings and characters as a framework to kind of loosen back into fiction writing. I was having trouble with the thing I've been working on and I had a huge realization that will be leading me to scrap most of what I wrote yesterday (I do really like the intro) and rework the entire thing. But....yay. I don't think I could do a blank slate very well either, unless it's super short. I always write with my Lavellan in mind and if something comes out non-specific enough, I'll generalize the name and details, but writing an amorphous PC with little identity....meh.
