Pssh yeah, if mages get the ability to fix stuff in the environment, what's better to fix a wall with than a giant, fire ball shaped window? It lets in a nice breeze.
What I want to know is how Cole can handle locks. Do spirits have lots of them? Does he ask his good pal Solas for help figuring them out? Because if the guy goes into old ruins to hang out, how the hell does he deal with all the traps? ....Then again, that's probably why his clothes are so stitched up.

Defeating mages is easy, we just need a well thought series of locked doors and they'll all be undone.
No wonder the Circles lasted so long.
Maybe Solas can open doors using his fade mage so we want have to go back to camp and pick up a rogue lol i wonder if his power of the fade can let him walk in doors but if he does our Mage Inquistor Viv and Dorian will still be locked out lol someone needs to make a comic of this
I swear Viv was doing some sort of teleportation spell in an early video... And it's times like this that I wish I could draw something other than stick figures.
Actually, that reminds me, do we know how Solas's powers differ from regular mages'? In an interview I recall David Gaider talking about how most Circle mages considered Hedge Mages to be ruined somehow. Wasted potential, because their abilities had not been channeled in the "right" way and therefore they would never be able to do spells like most mages can. He used the example of the Saarebas, who can only blow stuff up because they've never had any formal training. I wonder what this means for Solas.

Maybe she'd mellow out on her, "NOBODY SHOULD HAVE THIS POWER", attitude, though. See, Leliana, it's not so bad. Defeating mages is easy, we just need a well thought series of locked doors and they'll all be undone.
LELIANA: First, I thought that no one should have this power.
INQUISITOR: And now?
LELIANA: And now I realize you mages are baffled by simple locks.
[LELIANA AND SERA-THE-TEMPORARY-ROGUE BROFIST]
INQUISITOR: [SULKS]

Man that is a REALLY good question. We've seen plenty of apostate characters, but they've all been trained by OTHER mages, so there was never much of a noticeable difference in skill. It was more so in what skills they had from the get go than anything else. And the qunari are so war oriented, so even if they did properly teach their mages, I'm not sure what else they'd teach them? I mean, they're already like six times stronger than most mages in the games.
All I can guess is that someone self taught in magic would have different ways about going about things? Like someone who uses a different way to solve an equation than the teacher tells them. I can't think of a good way to turn this to magic though, hm... He might be less battle oriented too, or at least less straight forward about it? If you're all alone, relying on raw power won't do you any good if you're fighting a group. You've got to be really crafty about it.

HI FUZZY THREAD!
As for the magic, that is an interesting question, I wonder about solas' abilities, it might be interesting if he isn't like what others presume is a hedge mage, as he seems to be fined tuned to the fade it's possible his magic may be more controlled in a different way. I think one of the devs also said that solas' magic was different from most mages because off his connection with the fade, don't quote me on that but I remember hearing that somewhere... though I could be mixing that up with the inquisitors interactions with the fade tears.

Since Solas is said to be the nice guy maybe he ironically be the de-buffer. Solas doesnt strike me as the healing type. Had a though, could and would a hedge mage be able to perform blood magic?

Posté 02 août 2014 - 05:28
I think they're avoiding blood magic this time, honestly. It looks like they're focusing on necromancy instead, but Dorian already seems to have that covered. I think Solas will be closer to the "rift mage" designation.

I'm not sure if he'd be a blood mage even if it was available? The main reasons we've seen it for are power and he doesn't seem the type to need it? He might talk to demons but he doesn't seem like he'd need to boss them around either.
Rift mage is definitely the specialization I'm most curious about. Like....What the hell does it do? Do you open up a big hole in the Fade right under people and just suck them in or what? Can you summon spirits to help you fight?? I imagine it's less about fighting and more about debilitating or giving buffs or....SOMETHING but it's just so hard to guess right now.

As far as I know, to become a blood mage you need to use a manual, get lessons from a blood mage or deal with a demon. The first two would make someone stop being a hedge mage since it involves training but with the third option I don't see why a hedge mage couldn't become a blood one.
Edit: I'm talking about hedge mages in general here.

well, any mage has access to demons and since demons can hand out blood magic, sure. but blood magic's been replaced by necromancy this time around. we'll probably encounter enemies using it, but they took it away from the pc. and since it appears we're sharing specializations, i'd assume it's not available for the companions either. not going to lie, it makes me sad seeing as i live the blood mage life. but i get why they did it.
honestly i was wondering early on just how i'd get away with it this time around. and it always bothered me that no one seemed to notice... ever. they build up all this lore and "ohh, blood magic!" and then nobody bats an eye as my surana slits her wrists or IMPALES HERSELF in the middle of the field... like, really? i can see not penalizing players for a certain playstyle but i FULLY expected to be challenged. when it never happened, it was just... wow. really immersion breaking, honestly. so if blood magic gets replaced with necromancy to avoid that problem, then okay. i can deal.
necromancy sounds to me like it's probably CLOSE to blood magic but moreso toeing the line instead of running full speed across it. so maybe it'll be more debilitating? debuffing instead of straight up murder? think it's a big thing in Nevarra... though since Dorian doesn't like what's becoming of Tevinter, i can see why he'd back peddle and not have blood magic.
as for Solas though... i really don't know?? i actually could see him as a healer... if dedicated healers still existed. since they don't, i'm not sure? already mentioned Dorian and necromancy, and i'm assuming Vivi will be a destructive type since every time we've seen her she's doing something with fire. so what does that leave for Solas... is buffing still a thing?? is there still some healing spells, just different than what we know?? if knight enchanter is a new arcane warrior, and necromancer is a new blood mage... is rift mage a new spirit healer??? I HAVE NO IDEA BUT I SO WANT TO KNOW.
i love mages, i love being a mage, i love magic. i muuust know what they've done to the schools of magic in Inquisition. especially SPIRIT as it is my favorite.
actually, maybe Solas could be into the Spirit school. it is the most mystic of the four...
(disclaimer: 99% of this blathering is based on comparisons to Origins magic as i've played it waaay more than DA2. i think i've played all the way though DA2... four times? maybe five? something like that. so i reallly don't remember what the magic trees looked like there. oops.)

I imagine Necromancy is the summoning spec. One of the Spirit school spells was to animate the dead, and the last game I played with necromancy as a class involved summoning minions to take damage on your behalf (and maybe they flung damaging corpse stuff, I can't recall).
Rift magic seems like it would be really defensive, rather than offensive. In the Spirit Warrior spec, the character was protected by Fade entities/energies that absorbed some of the damage. I could see that being part of his skillset- maybe he could even erect a barrier to mitigate damage to any combatants behind it. I would love if some form of teleporting via the Fade was in there, but that might conflict with other aspects of his character/the lore.

I LOL'D
The mages all seem to be the smartest of the group too. All three are described as very intelligent. I hope we get to hear some of that come out in their banter and that all of it isn't teasing the poor scruffy hedgemage about his outfits.

Cat-napped with an elf?
A whole new wooooorld,
Maybe a demon here and there.

Together, we'll be dreaming.

They did take away dedicated healing, according to the Raptr Q & A. *shakes fist ineffectually at BioWare* Healing was my favorite role.
According to the screen caps someone took of the demo, Spirit is the new healing/buffing/dispelling tree.
I hope they give us a look at the skill trees/specializations before release. It looks like they changed a lot of things.

WAT. No, I refuse.
I mean, Spirit was dispelling in Origins... I loved that about it.
But WHAT ABOUT THE CREATION SCHOOL, BIOWARE? CREATION IS FOR HEALING, DAMMIT.
I mean, okay, I get changing it to nerf healing, but... REMOVING it? Warping it into SPIRIT?
WHAT ABOUT THE LORE. [LORE-NERD TABLE FLIP]
i sincerely hope this is not true i will be so displeased wow.
And so it begins again....
Oh, officially?
YES. NOW IS MY CHANCE.
[clears throat]
Look at this stuff! Isn't it neat?
Wouldn't you think that this Fadewalk's complete??
Wouldn't you think I'm the elf, the elf that knows... everything?
Look at this grove; knowledge untold!
How many memories can one ruin hold?
Looking around here you think, sure...
He's seen everything!
I've met spirits and demons aplenty!
I've done magic and dreaming galore!
You think you need a nap? I need twenty!
But who cares?
No big deal...

It's probably subject to change, the demo is at least four months old now but yeah, it's kind of a weird thing to do, considering all the lore that says the Spirit tree is not the healing tree.

I'm thinking rift mage might be similar to the Force Magic spec (which is described as a manipulation of energy). It could be that a rift mage pulls energy from the Fade somehow and uses it to push or pull our enemies, or maybe to throw up barriers, create force fields, etc. There could also be elements of the Creation school, where you could summon spell wisps and such.
OR, and this is what I'm kind of hoping, it'll be something unlike anything we've seen before - they are using a completely new engine, after all. In the latest combat video we saw a demon use a spell that looked almost like a laser beam that seemed to deal damage to everything it hit. It might be that Solas does have destructive abilities, they're just not exactly tied to real world elements (like fire, electricity, etc.)
It might even be that Solas could use a type of mind control - he is something like a dreamer after all - but perhaps it would require him to be 'asleep' to do it - as in, the ability would 'stun' him so he couldn't do anything else (kind of like what would happen to Wynne after using Vessel of the Spirit) but our enemies would attack one another, or be unable to attack us, or would walk right into traps or something.

We saw Solas using some sort of fire spell in a couple of his screenshots from a while ago. That's poooossibly a placeholder, though? Or it could mean that he CAN learn the basic elemental magic alongside his own special brand of magic? The guy is smart as hell and all of our companions are supposed to be majorly good and the best of the best, so it's possible that being a "hedgemage" hasn't held him back too much and that he can learn a few basic spells along with his unique form of magic.

Since the fire and ice spell trees are separate I'd guess his unique brand of magic is Rift mage. Didn't the devs say specs were gained through plot? Maybe mages can learn that spec from Solas.

I was beginning to draw a Solas pic last night and my boyfriend interrupted me like, "Why don't you pay attention to me?" I wanted to go "my Solas unicorns need me" but I'm just too nice so I forced myself to stop. I just woke up so I hope to finish my drawing today (the arm is killing me, though)
You see, this is why we need a video of him in combat! I've seen still pictures that look like he's performing some spell but I can't tell what it is. I want this game..In my hands....right now.

I could see Solas knowing some sort of blood mage. Finn, the squeaky clean adorable nerd-mage from the Witch Hunt DLC, knew a ritual he called 'borderline blood magic', so I wouldn't be surprised if Solas dabbled in some borderline spells as well. His entire character looks beyond what other people view as wrong or bad, so I could see him viewing certain circumstances or uses of blood magic as okay, and even using them himself.

I am curious why Solas doesn't fit the description of a hedge mage. "Stopped-up dam" was the phrase used, I believe. Maybe he was taught by spirits directly?
