Yeah! I definitely don't have that haircut! That haircut looks douchey and stupid!

*goes to barbers*

You are aware of how badly I now want to photoshop Cullen's hair on Keith Moon's head?

While we're on the topic of Alistair, here's a little interview with Steve Valentine that was released today.

Spoiler

Regarding the bit he says at the end, I wonder if somebody should show him the Alistair/Broodmother romance gif..

Alistair is a doof.  I love the guy.  I think he was supposed to be more like Cullen when DA:O was in early development, but obviously..well you saw what we got.  I think we're going to get that kind of guy in every game.   More people respond to that romance -- it's more marketable and the characters are more palatable *pat pat grumpy Solas*.  As loved and as talked about as Solas' romance is - it's not the most popular.  Cullen's is.   Alistair's remains very popular. So be prepared for more like them in upcoming iterations of the series.  Again, that's not to say they aren't worth having around.  I think BW is doing a better job diversifying what kind of LI you get. I mean in this game, almost all of them were 40 and over. I mean they don't look it, but hey..THAT'S GREAT!

And yet, here we are all, spamming in the Solas thread about our feels for him, proof that characters don't need blond hair, brown eyes, and awkwardish/shy behavior to make players go crazy over them. To me, Solas defies the odds, he certainly doesn't look "pretty" the first time you lay eyes on him, and yet he's definitely a major LI in DA:I. Not as big as Cullen's fanbase, but definitely strong enough to matter. Maybe Bioware should write characters they actually want to write, and not characters manufactured to cater to fanbases and to "what's more marketable". But then again, the struggle of all AAA games.

But if my warden ends up with Alistair in my DA:O run, it'll mean I really love his personality a lot. And I hope it'll be the case, because right now, I just see another blond prettyboy, and I'm not really attracted to that.

All of my first playthroughs were with characters whose names started with A.

Amelie Cousland, Amata Hawke, Aoife Lavellan

Hey! My first and canon DA:O playthrough was a Mahariel named Aoife. She was staunchly Dalish, had Elgar'nan's tats and potent red hair. *high five*

Sometimes it takes me longer to pick a name than it does to create my character. I have a huge spreadsheet of names with columns for meaning, region of origin, alternate spellings, and so on and so forth. And I'm never happy until I get one that's just right.

The spreadsheet isn't really for games (just for regular writing), but it does come in handy when I need to name RPG characters too.

A gal after my own heart. I am also an immense name nerd, and keep massive lists. Fav. name website: www.behindthename.com I have whiled away hours and hours on that website. Mm. Names.

#ThursdayConfession : Sometimes I feel like Alistair and Cullen look too much alike. On Fanarts, I always have to look for the scar or for the tags in order to know who's who. Ugh, Bioware should stop already with the blond haired & light brown eyes pretty guys trope.
Also, I can't stand Alistair's douchebag hairstyle in Origins, he makes me think of a pretentious Californian surfer or something :/

I'm with you on Alistair's douchehair. In general, I much prefer dark brown/black hair and am really not into blonds (I am all the blonde I need, evidently). That being said, I still totally fell for silly, dorky, lost-puppy, loyal do-gooder, cutie-pants Alistair.

But Solas blows him out of the water.

Speaking as someone who goes on personality and has canon romances with Alistair and Anders....it can surely happen. Alistair was the first game character who I went....if only you were a real person.... (despite being actually in a relationship - ha, with the same guy as now, so he just rolls his eyes and cracks jokes about Solas as he always has with my choice of in-game LIs). Though he just knew I'd love Solas because of his personality...and he was right.

Yep, same. Behind the Name is good but it can be lacking in some areas. I use a few sites to get a lot of different language/culture/mythology names, as well as other sources. I'm the type of nerd who has huuuuuge books on symbols and myths and stuff on the shelf.

I will never argue with this.  Just layin' down the cold hard truth.  So yeah...AAA games.  Hell, if I had a choice, I would have romanced Samson all the way to rock candy mountain. But...alas...no dice.  So I'm not put off by "unattractive" characters.  If written well, I will romance them(*wink wink* Architect).

Solas' fan-base certainly matters because it's vocal as hell. People will be PISSED if it doesn't get resolved.  Or is written poorly.  So I wouldn't worry about that.

I get why Alistair is not for everyone. I saw a few posts that said humor turned them off of him and they made good points.  I thought he was charming in his way.  I'll always have a soft-spot for him...he was my first BW romance. Plus, his transition into DA:I...did NOT disappoint.  hachachacha...he aged very well.

Good, god, the Alistair romance is wonderful. The only reason I didn't end up with him is because of certain game plot points that... meant more to me than he did, which sounds terrible. Honestly, if we could have worked it out, it would have been my Warden and Alistair. But there were certain choices she made that he just couldn't go along with.

And they also have to sell games and pay their employees a living wage, which only gets harder as the cost of development goes up. The argument about listening to feedback cuts both ways.  We can't have our cake and eat it too; if BioWare's going to listen to feedback and respond, they're going to listen to everyone's feedback, which will contain opinions different from ours.

IMO the only difference between "Yay, BioWare's listening!" and "Boo, they're catering to a fanbase" is whether people happen to like that character/feature/mechanic.  But maybe I'm just cynical

This is accurate for me at least. I romanced Alistair on my first playthrough of DAO, but as I've gotten older I've been less and less interested.

Similar to how I can chart my journey into adulthood on a scale of how attractive I've found Mark Ruffalo.

(From not to very. For anyone who's interested).

Oh no, I'm definitely happy they listen to fanbases and answer to it, because indeed it's a AAA game, and a huge company that relies heavily on their fanbase, so they'll do a lot to cater to it. But I've also seen indie video games in which people didn't give two craps about catering to anyone, and just had a vision and a message to share, without altering it to please anybody's demands, and yet these games were huge hits because of their own interesting art and creative direction.

But like I said, things are billion times more difficult when you're a huge company, and when there's people expecting big bucks out of the games you make.
