Dat lore, dat booty, and that chuckke..I was doomed at "is that a serious question." At that point I was all aboard the Solas train into the hellspiral of feels.

Yeah, he checks off on  my attractiveness mental checklist.

Intelligent? Check.

Sensual voice? Check.

Physically attractive? Check.

Good Kisser? Check to infinity and beyoooondddd.

Am I the only one who was manipulative enough to only romance Solas for lore reason? Not his oddly-proportioned face or hard-to-impress grandpa personality. I made out with him for knowledge

Everybody lock up your grandpas! Rabbit is on the prowl.

Edit: I need to try harder to keep my posts on topic. On the subject of Solas' oddly proportioned face: it's so true. Every single time I draw him, I place his eyes too low because I forget how his features don't quite follow the markers of human facial structure.

I'm familiar with the notion of bending these markers in the creation of humanoid creatures, so assume this is what they were doing with Solas (and maybe some other Dragon Age elves? Though I can't think of any others, off the top of my head), but it's damn hard to do intuitively.

It would depend on how broadly you defined 'personality,' but I really wouldn't say so.

You can have all sorts of personalities and pretty much all stories do, even by the least skilled writers. Characters who are silly, loud, reserved, stoic, aggressive, polite. None of that really equates to important qualities.

Liara is by far my favorite BioWare romance because of the courage she demonstrates during Lair of the Shadow Broker, but that's rarely a quality associated with her rather timid personality.

The dictionary definition of "personality" contains the word "qualities" (at least according to Merriam-Webster), so I feel like you're arguing over semantics here.

This is accurate for me at least. I romanced Alistair on my first playthrough of DAO, but as I've gotten older I've been less and less interested.

Similar to how I can chart my journey into adulthood on a scale of how attractive I've found Mark Ruffalo.

(From not to very. For anyone who's interested).

Is this a real thing? I also romanced Alistair on my first playthrough, and went back later and fell for Zev instead. I seem to be moving progressively further away from the "white knight" type of character.

Also the Mark Ruffalo scale of attractiveness over time is a real thing. I don't think I'd thought about him in years and just looked him up and yep...totally a guy I find attractive now.

hahahaha. No. Silly you.

Like zambixi said (beat me to it):

QUALITY - a distinctive attribute or characteristic possessed by someone or something

PERSONALITY - the combination of characteristics or qualities that form an individual's distinctive character

I played my Lavellan palythrough, then decided to go human Inquisitor to shake things up. Got to "is that a serious question?"

And I just looked at my Inquisitor like "you and me are not going to work out."

I have to force myself not to select the chantry dialogue, otherwise the temptation is too great. It's probably the most difficult choice of my game tbh.

There is no choice. There's only the chantry dialogue.

I was a pre-release fangirl.  I was lost the moment those tight long johns made their first apperence on the elf we thought was Dorian.

I thoroughly admit to being one of those who totally scoffed at the possibility of being interested pre-release.

Then I talked to him.

I had to go as different as possible from Lavellan to get past the chucklesnort.  Man Adaar, really different personality, opposite choices, Dorian romance.  And even that playthrough is currently on ice while I chase more elf tail in Pillars of Eternity

If you have a more precise term for the this sort of thing, I'm all ears.

The relevant point is that no amount of sliding a character back on forth on the 'goofy-to-serious' scale and the 'talkative to reserved' scale and whatever other scales you come up is going to make a great character or great romance.

Too many people seem convinced that there's a certain 'sweet' spot of these characteristics or whatever you want to call them that means a 'good' character or 'good' romance.' or good writing. That both in fiction and real life, if you find the 'right' combination on the scale, you'll fall and love and everything will be peaches and cream. That's drivel.

It's a sum of many things, and it's going to be different for everyone. There is no answer. Terrifying, I know.

No, just lazy.

If this isn't something you care to take apart and think apart, nobody's asking you to. But don't become upset because other people do.

How this thread feels right now:

Spoiler

People do like different things, and different traits and such attract them. Solas attracted me with a combination of good writing, personality, voice acting, and other things like the animated body language. And yet the romance itself is ultimately sad but story and lore relevant. I can say that making the decision to romance Solas during my first playthrough was the best decision i could've made. It sort of tainted the rest of the game with a certain sadness that I thought was a great thing. Other people were confused when I mentioned feeling sad after finishing the game.

But romances in games are a nice thing to have and in BioWare, something you expect. As far as what has already been said, there are reasons people are off squeeing about Cullen. It's a nice romance and it's very sweet.  I was kind of dislike to indifferent about Cullen before. I like Cullen in DAI but because of his growth. As a player, I still remembered Mr. Kill All Mages.

In any case, fulfillment is a side benefit but it's not like most people are expecting in-game romances to be as fulfilling or full as real romances, but they're nice within the game and if fleshed out and written well and also anchored within the game, they can be just one more good thing about a game.

He's my favorite troll.  Because he asks questions he knows the answers to.  He's like the bridge troll in "3 billy goats gruff".

And yet inescapable trends emerge.

The answer is qualities. Qualities are what give characters allure. More so than attractiveness, and more so than personality. Qualities are what's necessary for a great romance. And it's just as much the case in real life as in fiction.

Like many I don't understand your insistence on one term over the other. I take it you mean significant or impressive traits. This seems like semantics. And what are you trying to say about Solas? Just to stay on topic, for a lark.

I like how everyone's reaction is basically

Which, coincidentally, was my reaction to many of the things Solas said.

If finding Mark Ruffalo attractive is the measure of maturity, I shall never grow up.  He just doesn't Falon my Din, so to speak.
