Yes, but that's Bull. That doesn't say anything for the rest of your companions or how the remainder of the Inquisition functions..

Fair enough though also to be fair, there's not many examples of people disobeying you, or really putting themselves in a position for us to see how they operate within the Inquisition. Some people do more than others. That's true of the military as well. Pencil pushers and such.

And that's incredibly difficult to explain to a naysayer who hasn't even done Adamant. :)

I've more-or-less given up on trying to talk Dragon Age with my boyfriend.  It's more like me gushing about Dragon Age in his general direction, and him humoring me  He gets picky about mechanics and therefore doesn't usually play BioWare games, but he did like watching me play the Mass Effect series and got into the story.  We teared up together over Mordin.

While I was playing Inquisition, I asked him why he didn't like DA as much, and you know what he said?  "Everyone's just too goddamn SAD."   I get it, though.  His threshold for feels apathy just happens to be a lot lower than mine.

Frustration is...boyfriend complaining about a game he hasn't even finished half the story in and then reducing the reasons why you like a game or character down to romance. Especially since I have the Solas romance card as my tablet background (it also happens to be my favorite of all the tarot cards they did, for the art too). then again, he belittled the series and reduced my enjoyment of Origins to...Alistair? Like there is so very much more in that game. I think he's stereotyping too much. Sigh.

Ugh, I told him that there are many reasons why I love Solas and the romance only makes up a bit of that, but it opens up so much of his character and he cannot understand that without me spoiling and he reduces the entire game to a series of shallow complaints. He hated what he played and thinks it's terrible and yet complained when I accidentally spoiled Morrigan's presence somewhere. Like...make up your mind if you hate it and refuse to play or care about spoilers.

Layers, there are layers!

Oh God, that must be frustrating. I hate people who take their sweet time catching up on a series or game (or even vacillate on whether or not they'll finish it) but then don't let you talk about it or get mad when you accidentally spoil it. I'll admit I'm usually that person that takes forever to catch up with my friends or family on a game or series, but unless I'm actively trying to catch up as soon as possible, I don't make them stay mum about it. To their credit, they always ask if it's okay if they spoil, and I always tell them, "I don't plan to finish / I probably won't catch up for a long time, so go on ahead and tell me."

Coming back to Solas, it's really frustrating when people try to invalidate your reasons for liking him, or any game or character, with, "You just like the romance." And not because the romance is good, but because of some arbitrary reason they cherry-picked to deem it negative. "You just like Alistair because he's a hunk/he can make you queen." "You just like Solas because he's a god." It's not like there could be other aspects of their character that we like, or that those aspects didn't even play into why we like them. (For example, I never make Alistair king, and loved Solas before ever learning he was a god.)

Trying to explain that it's just another way to enjoy roleplaying, learning about the character, and/or experiencing the central story, is lost on so many.  -_-

Mine doesn't like BW games either.  Or RPGs in general.  He thinks they are too silly.  He loves Fallout though and gets really into the sidestories. He was horrified I blew up Megaton.  Called me a monster.   He mostly just plays DOTA and FPSs on a very rare occassion.  His philosophy, if there aren't real people he can make cry then he doesn't have any fun.

My boyfriend GMs and plays a lot of tabletop RPGs with me, and he loves roleplaying.  I think that TBH may be the hurdle for him when it comes to CRPGs.  No matter how good it is or how responsive, it'll never match up to having a human GM who can craft a 3+ year story arc for your character, world, and friends.

That's what this glorious image is for (spoilered for profanity):

I happen to like both Alistair and Solas very much, and I happen to like their romances.  I also want to punch Alistair sometimes for being a whiny manchild, and if the game would let me put Solas in time-out for being the God of Bad Decisions, I would totally do that too.  I like their flaws and imperfections as much as I like their strengths; it's what makes them good characters.

Well, I meant people you care about or people who jump down your throat for making a seemingly innocuous comment about liking it, but whatever.

Anyway, thankfully my beau enjoys story, characters, roleplaying, and romance in games too, but he tends to like different characters and romances for different reasons than I do. For example, for DAI he played a Qunari, romanced Bull, and fell in love with the Chargers. I played a Dalish, romanced Solas, and fell in love with "Elven Glory." (Which gets you pounced on everywhere here in the forums, which is why I'm on edge.) We can't really talk about it because I don't care much for Bull or the Chargers, and he doesn't really care much for Solas or "elfy" things.

He also tends to speed through games once and then move onto ten new titles, while I play the same game several times and obsess over it for years, so that also diminishes conversation potential.

My husband is the one who Introduced me to Dragon Age. He takes forever to play video games because the camera movements give him headaches. So he's not even finished with his second playthrough of DAO - meanwhile, I've gone three playthroughs of DAO and DA2 each and sitting in front of the tv playing Inquisition and refusing to spend my life on anything else.

So he decides to zoom through DA2 and start Inquisition. He hasn't gotten very far... I think he finally made it to skyhold and I'm now on my third playthrough. I found the DA lore books the other day and was drolling over them. And he rolled his eyes, and I was like "hey, this is your fault! You introduced me!"

I'm not even going to start on his opinion of Solas...

This so much.  You can usually tell my favourite characters by the amount of time I spend listing their flaws.

I'm usually the one who takes longer to finish everything and he's already done trying to not spoil things for me. This man spoiled the Virmire decision for me and it filled me with dread the entire time I was playing ME1.

Oh I try to not pay attention, but he's a person who definitely likes to think he's always right, and stubborn about it. So he'll assign me reasons.

I did find Alistair adorable, while he found him whiny. I made him king and had my Warden marry him so that was still bittersweet at the end (and they even address it, due to their shortened lives and probable sterility but they want to try marriage anyway). He dismisses Alistair as 'girly fanservice'. Whatever. Alistair too has his layers and insecurity and motivations, history, people he cares about, etc.

And Solas, well, I liked Solas for multiple reasons even before finding out who he was but all of that just made the multiple tons of layers and overall sadness and tragedy of his existence and reality (man also has deep baggage and struggles to understand current realities). The grandpa memes and butt grabbing and the kiss gif and all of these other things, you know, there's fun to be poked as well, but as I said before, the layers....are what make him such a great character.

At that point I would just have to ask the people - so what? I love BioWare games for all that the characters are and maintain that they don't have to be bangable to be awesome and worth taking around with you in the big wide world. But if someone plays the game because they like a specific character, or they prefer the romances first and foremost, why is this bad? Are we to suggest that they are being silly girls? Does this take away from the possibility that they otherwise like the game? Why is it automatically a negative? Anyone suggesting there is something "wrong" with a person for liking a romance story might want to examine why they take pleasure in stealing someone else's joy.

Also, the slobbering stupidity of "youz jus liek Solas cuz he god" needs to die. Those who romanced him first had NFC. Those who ran through the romance after finding out so they could experience it and find they liked it did not necessarily like it because he's a god, but because it's a damn good romance. Wallowing in personal made-up negativity you project on others has to be a really crappy way to live life, yo.

Preach it. I find that argument infuriating. Like saying "you just like strawberry ice cream because it tastes good." Am I not supposed to enjoy things that have characteristics that are appealing to me? Why is enjoying a game because I enjoy playing selectable romances (something that exists in like....1% of games) less valid than enjoying a game because I get to hit things in a tactical way (something that exists in like...60-80% of games)? What is this trend where people have to defend the reasons they like something as more/less valid than other completely arbitrary reasons that just happened to be accepted by the wider culture? /rage

  • Cole: It sees him ready to jump. Pain pounding, pulsing, life of frustration can finally fall, to freeze.
  • Solas: Ah, yes.
  • Cole: It holds him high, shows the hole, were everything falls without him. He never needs to leave. He matters here.
  • Solas: That is one interpretation, yes.
  • Cole: You think it is different.
  • Solas: I think he fell, and it held him as he died, leaving him with images that told him his life was worthwhile.
  • Cole: That's much sadder. But yes. Calm, comfort, as the cold takes him away.

Shartan, discouraged by a "life of frustration" trying to save his enslaved people, jumps off a cliff to his death.

Shartan is not fused with FH like anders and justice, he's dead and his body is an empty vessel for FH to inhabit.

Before he dies, FH comforts shartan with images of FH's plan to save the elven people letting him know that his death will lead to the salvation he couldn't achieve on his own during his life time.

I can't find the reference now of course, but I'm pretty sure someone verified that this is referring to A Wonderful Life. Which is like...the most depressing interpretation of that movie ever.

Are you saying that Solas' current body is Shartan's? How is his body not decaying then? From what we've seen bodies decay even when they're inhabited by other spirits (Justice, Zombies).
