Actually, the weird bit is we agree more than not on the flaws (though maybe not in severity, effect, or how detrimental, and some of his version is based on links and hearsay and the fact most of his friends also stopped playing, though his best friend both finished and liked it -- I like his best friend, we're similar and had some nice long chat about Mass Effect and other stuff the only time we were all together (since he lives on the other coast) and we've both encouraged him to finish), but I have the entire game plus a lot of theory and lore thought and reading and discussion behind me.

 

Solas, to be on topic but also just because, you can't fully discuss his character without huge giant spoilers. He doesn't even know that Solas leaves you....I wonder if he has the impression it was all happy barfing rainbows at the end. Which would be hilarious if he did. But it's not enough if I mentioned the breakup since he would ask why and then want to know. And then have the full circle nature of the game and a lot of things totally spoiled.

 

Odd side note: I googled trying to find the "Is that a serious question?" gif and one of my sites/screenshots came up in the image search results. That image isn't even captioned anything related to the serious question moment. Except "Solas".

These things always pass, as will happen when you've been with someone for a decade, but he has an annoying need to be 'right' sometimes. Still, totally not having this discussion anymore. It's especially silly since he hasn't even finished and I need to vague talk around some of the very major reasons why I like Solas, for example. Or the lore stuff. So I kind of laugh it off at this point.  If he keeps trying I will just spoil grandpa sexy elf for him after all.

Ummm....  so...tomorrow is my birthday.  I was wondering if anyone would want to draw my Lavellan and Solas for me since my art skills suck?  I feel kind of odd asking. If anyone wants to..she has long white hair that she usually keeps up in a pony tail when she's away from Skyhold, but down when she's running around in her pajamas. She has the full Mythal vallaslin and light green eyes. Oh..and she's a rift mage.

This is what I meant. It's not about the game, really, or about the objective assessment of its quality. You crush on that Solas guy and he dislikes that, maybe he also just wants to tease you. So he says the game is totally overrated (like I say about most of Halo) and you just dismiss it. That's kicking his ego right between the eyes and nobody likes that.
We shouldn't be hypocritical, I bet we all would not like to see somebody else simply dismiss our opinion. After all, most people want to be right and want to see their own ideas reflected in their loved ones. Being right feels good after all.
But when we like somebody we just have to get down from that high horse sometimes and see that being happy might be better than being right. He seems to not have this self-awareness sometimes (and I even assume you seem strong enough so that he does not even know he seriously hurts you with his behavior), but what you said about him so far does not sound bad to me. I did have fallings-out with people who I considered arrogant and ignorant, for this very reason that they dismissed my feelings. This is something I can't stand, the sort of "your feelings are wrong and, hence, they don't matter" approach. But your bf does not seem that way to me, so I'd just be more relaxed.

Don't worry, you expressed it just fine. You simply interpreted her anecdotes with more concern than I did. But I do see your point because there are actually people in the world who stick to unhealthy relationships out of fear or weakness. (I just don't believe HiddenStrike to be one of them because she seemed too relaxed about it.) So pointing out that sometimes we should reconsider isn't a bad thing to do.

Have I engaged in discussion, have I expressed seriously my unhappiness with his approach instead of laughing so that he knows it's becoming hurtful, have I fired back out of irritation?"

 

There's only been short, one-sided comments on the forums - enough that some feel compelled to respond (whether out of concern or general support) but are working blind about the whole context. Reflecting on a situation to consider multiple possibilities and how we ourselves may contribute to an issue is never 100% bullshit, because even if we are mistaken, we momentarily step outside our own assumptions and knee-jerk responses. The bullshit comes in with the, "Oh, he's a Scorpio, what do you expect?" or, "He probably has mommy issues."

 

Dismissing an entire field because of hacks or legions of facebook quizzes deciding one's personality is pretty common too, though. Edited for clarity and proper quotes.

His behavior does sound annoying but I can't help but feel a bit bad for the guy, getting a body cavity search by strangers on a forum. lol He just sounds like an opinionated hater, not like he has some kind of deep seated issues. Obviously HS will know her dude best.

A couple of my friends tried DAI and simply refuse to play it based on the PC mechanics. My advice to them was to put the difficulty down and just play for the story, or to try it with a controller, but for some people that's insulting.

I didn't go around collecting art and buying t-shirts and plushies of Alistair.  I did feed his Tali addiction by getting him a Tali figurine though..so..I dunno. It's not the obsession that weirded me out but all the people reflecting themselves on the character so rabidly. That was a lot worse back when the thread moved so fast, that it didn't feel much like a community, just a chatbox. It's different now though.

My boyfriend has a limited edition expensive, huge print of Tali art, he had mounted, framed and shipped from a gallery in Europe. Some official art that was released after ME3. I'm fine with his Tali love. I find the contrast amusing.

This is pretty much it. Well, other than his stubborn need to be right (which goes hand in hand with this). He has actually said it like this too. As I stated, he and I both agree on multiple flaws the game has, maybe varying in depth or how much it ultimately affected the game for us. He stopped, I didn't. I changed the way i usually play this sort of game and wound up enjoying it more. But the fact we agree on many of the flaws and yet I actually finished and enjoyed myself.....that bothers him, and he thinks it says something about me (And I think he was trying to guess when he postured about the romance). As I said, we've been together for 10 years. He's kind of stubborn, but these things always pass.

 

 

Can we talk about how terrible some of Solas' promo art is?
