I like that they both appear to still be elves in a modern AU. I'm admittedly not as keen when they're not elves. So I guess I really am going to have to check this out.

My original Keep world state had the Architect dead, to my shame. I wanted him alive, but my Warden was all like, "Nope". God damnit, Korinna. Needless to say, I had to change that, which is why I'll need to replay through my canon playthrough again, so that change can take effect. My Warden will just have to deal. I'll just...have some character development take place before then. I can't not let the Architect live. I love him too much.

He is! I love him. I could write poetry about him, except I can't write poetry, so that doesn't work. But I loved how charming he was in spite of being Darkspawn. My Warden felt it, too, but she complained, "But he could start more bliiiiiights. I have to stab him." Fast forward some months later, and she came to painfully regret that decision. Taking time to reflect on the Architect, his words, and his actions, and she realized he probably could have done more good than bad. Hopefully. She was just too enamored with the Wardens, romanticizing them to unhealthy degrees, and taking the, "Kill all Darkspawn, ask questions later- or better yet, never!" mentality a little to seriously. I'll just have her go through that mentality change before confronting the Architect, and she can slap him on the back and tell him to frolick off into the sunset, doing whatever he deemed necessary. She's also crazy, so that can always work as an excuse as well. She wanted to find Anders in whatever cold, dark hole he was undoubtedly hiding in to yell at him and kill him with her lecturing when she heard what he did, but that's a whole other story entirely.

So, my Lavellan, essentially.  This sort of behavior is why they sent her to the Conclave with strict orders not to harm anyone.  They figured either she'd fail and get killed or realize that humans are people, too.  She's very, very cranky about how this is all turning out. 

 

That made me think of this adorable art.

I finally just finished the game, and that's a huge achievement for me in and of itself because with DA:I, I had a tendency of restarting with new characters which had gone on for weeks until now because I finally got one to the end. Go me!

 

I have to say that I found the Solas romance to be really underwhelming.  If there had been more substance, more meaningful interactions, perhaps I wouldn't be feeling this way now but at the moment, I feel like the writers dropped the ball as far as Solas' storyline goes.

I really like his character, which is probably why this bothers me so much but the two very brief, albeit sweet romance scenes, just didn't seem to be enough to carry the ultimate face re-arranging scene and subsequent end of the relationship by Solas.  It fell flat for me and even though I myself as a player was fuming, I somehow managed to have my character remain her wise beyond her years, understanding self, to the point where I chose the 'Later, then?" option to which she was reassured that if they both still live after the Corypheus fight, all will be made clear.

 

He lied. Nothing was made clear, my character still doesn't even know he's the dread wolf, but I do.   Not only that but what kind of a ****** god do you need to be to give even the smallest modicum of power to a MAGISTER DARKSPAWN?! I don't care how weak you were from a long slumber, a multi-millenia old being would know better and hence, my problem with the writing for Solas.

I'm partial to the cute Solavellan art (and the cute Solavellan porn)  of hers but that one makes me laugh every time too.

 

I just kind of half expected something a bit fluffy and then wooosh. But in a good way.

 

So,  ( it was me leaving you some recent comments on AO3) I feel like you've found whatever it was you might have felt you misplaced in being sort of less constrained by chapter structures with Maiwe. As with that first side story (and if I can put up 600ish word things on AO3, why not add this in that collection). This was compact, but full of great details, word choice, structure, and packed with feeling.

It's good. Personally I prefer the author's other Solavellan fanfic, but I'm not a huge fan of AUs. I like everything to fit into the canon universe as much as possible in the fanfics I read, but I'm a picky reader.

The chantry banter? That is separate from the banter widely believed to be about Meet Joe Black  ("it holds them as they die"). And Solas talking about causes - does he say some things about that outside of a dislike run where he's asked why he doesn't help the elves more? Or in mentoring Sera?

 

I think after Mythal being housed within Flemeth and even JoH

with the Avvar gods basically being spirits and their mages even being united with spirits for a time, and even the Hakkon ritual

 

that would be a bit repetitive, IMO. Like everyone having a secret identity. If DA4 had people with secret identities, I'd feel like it were treading over old ground just a bit.

 

But I'm also curious to find out more about just what the hell elven godhood means.

 

One thing Solas says in one of his lines after the Temple of Mythal:  "Something must have existed to start the legends. If not gods, then mages, or spirits, or something we've never seen" 

 

Mages, spirits, we've speculated but that last bit,....since Solas is such a deliberately careful speaker, that part made me wonder. (Though, granted, when he's angry or emotional, he can sort of begin to slip....he even used a contraction in that line).

Well, considering the popularity of the theory that Sera herself is/harbors another elven god, it makes sense if he calls her "our people" while distancing himself from the Dalish and other elves. Further proof, Sera is Andruil! Haha hahahaha.

I'm liking this structure so much better. Drabbles are what's working for me within the constraints of this story right now. Plus, it allows me to take prompts from people, which is always nice. It makes people happy, gives me something to write about. Win/win.

I want solas to be fen'harel, full stop, because the big reveal kind of loses it's impact if it's only sort of true, or if the explanation is especially convoluted and some of the glamor sort of wears off

 

but on the other hand

 

i'm also nursing this "elves were spirits that materialized like cole did" theory (abelas' temple codex talking about being "trapped here", keiran wondering why elves "want to look like that", solas' emphasis on spirits being people, mythal joining with flemeth, entering uthenera and drawing substance from the fade, codex entry about falon'din guiding the people in the beyond and then being able to return, immortality an innate part of being an elf)

 

and also that solas is or was possessing shartan (the chantry stained glass window of shartan is suspiciously familiar, the chantry banter solas has with cole, "it makes sense, it (presumably fen'harel) holds them as they die", solas mentions "this isn't the first cause i've joined")

it\s a neat story either way, i just think it would be cool if he were shartan because of the parallels between the inquisition and andraste's crusade against the imperium, and how cool it would be if solas were there both times and him and varric were like "ugh not again, we're getting too old for this ****"

I think I mostly understand the arguments behind the Shartan theory, but for whatever reason just can't get on board. Solas-as-the-dread-wolf-and-surprise-also-as-Shartan-andmaybeaspiritorsomething basically seems a bit much to me. I could certainly be wrong, but it just feels too far-fetched to heap that much on one character. 

 

Not to mention the potential negative reactions to whatever these things could imply for the romance in retrospect. I feel like the writers would want to stay clear of any fan fallout that could arise from those added complications. His revelation as it stands is pretty shocking, and some people are already upset with the way everything has ended so far, and were questioning the validity of his feelings, and whether he was using Lavellan, and so on. It would seem a risky (and lazy) gambit to go far beyond what they already have with him.

 

I'd like to think that I'm self aware enough to separate my desire for Solas and Fen'Harel to be uncomplicated and one in the same from these discussions, but it could be playing into it, so I won't discount it altogether. That being said, I think it's been confirmed that a lot of the banter between Cole and Solas are references to films, as is some of Cole's individual banter. So, in these instances it seems the writers are kinda toying with us a bit.

 

Regarding Solas speaking of his childhood and not considering the pantheon (or himself) to be gods, I don't think this lends support to either theory, really. It just is. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

 

I do find the idea of elves originally being spirits or partial spirits joined with a non-spirit intriguing and wonder if maybe that's the case with some of them (hence Solas saying "or something we haven't seen" among the options he lists for what the gods "could" have been), but I just can't get a clear enough idea of the mechanics surrounding this to think it would be the case with all of them. I'd like to read more on this theory, though.

 

When it all comes down to it, I really don't know, and wouldn't be massively surprised if they did continue to throw us curve balls regarding Solas. It's all just considered suppositions, for me. It sure is fun to discuss, though.

My love of playing a mage in DA2 is 25% because it's my favourite class, 25% because I think the story works best with a mage and 50% because I would kill Beth myself if it meant protecting Carver (sorry Beth).
